SUMMARY:Were You There? The Story of Manchester Free Trade Hall.
DESCRIPTION:THE FREE TRADE HALL – THE MOST IMPORTANT POPULAR MUSIC VENUE IN GREAT BRITAIN BETWEEN 1951 AND 1996\n\n\n\n\n\nRichard Lysons\, author of ‘Were You There? Popular Music At Manchester’s Free Trade Hall 1951-1996’ will talk to veteran Manchester music writer\, Mick Middles about his widely acclaimed book.\n\n\nManchester’s Free Trade Hall was arguably the most important popular music venue in Great Britain between 1951 and 1996. After several incarnations\, the building was re-constructed and opened in 1951 as the new home of the Halle Orchestra. Yet it was popular music which would secure the venue its fame as it responded to each wave of popular music from jazz and skiffle through rock ‘n’ roll and folk to prog\, punk and heavy metal. \nFrom Billie Holiday to Blondie\, Duke Ellington to Led Zeppelin\, Pink Floyd to Happy Mondays\, Rolling Stones to The Beach Boys\, David Bowie to Suede\, just about everyone who mattered played there. The Free Trade Hall was also the venue for incendiary gigs by Bob Dylan in 1966 and the Sex Pistols a decade later which changed the course of music history. \nRichard Lysons’ ‘meticulously researched tome’ will be of interest to anyone who ever attended a concert at the venue or has an interest in the history of popular music in Britain’s most musically important city. Alongside his own expert commentary on every headline act\, he gives the reader a sense of what was going on at other venues in Manchester. \nRichard’s book was published at the end of last year in the middle of lock-down(s). It has received overwhelmingly positive reaction in the press\, from fellow music writers and from musicians. \nThere will be a Q & A session during the evening. Copies of Were You There? will be on sale at the event and Richard is happy to sign copies of the book that people already own.

SUMMARY:Shon Faye: The Transgender Issue
DESCRIPTION:Writer and presenter Shon Faye will be at Manchester Central Library to discuss her new book THE TRANSGENDER ISSUE with Christine Burns MBE.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nBlackwell’s Manchester and Manchester Libraries are delighted to be hosting an evening with writer and presenter Shon Faye to celebrate the launch of her new book THE TRANSGENDER ISSUE: AN ARGUMENT FOR JUSTICE. Shon will be in conversation with civil rights and equality campaigner Christine Burns MBE. \nAbout the book: \nTrans people in Britain today have become a culture war ‘issue’. Despite making up less than one per cent of the country’s population\, they are the subjects of a toxic and increasingly polarized ‘debate’ which generates reliable controversy for newspapers and talk shows. This media frenzy conceals a simple fact: that we are having the wrong conversation\, a conversation in which trans people themselves are reduced to a talking point and denied a meaningful voice. In this powerful new book\, Shon Faye reclaims the idea of the ‘transgender issue’ to uncover the reality of what it means to be trans in a transphobic society. In doing so\, she provides a compelling\, wide-ranging analysis of trans lives from youth to old age\, exploring work\, family\, housing\, healthcare\, the prison system and trans participation in the LGBTQ+ and feminist communities\, in contemporary Britain and beyond. The Transgender Issue is a landmark work that signals the beginning of a new\, healthier conversation about trans life. It is a manifesto for change\, and a call for justice and solidarity between all marginalized people and minorities. Trans liberation\, as Faye sees it\, goes to the root of what our society is and what it could be; it offers the possibility of a more just\, free and joyful world for all of us. \nAbout the author: \nShon Faye was born in Bristol\, and is now based in London. After training as a lawyer\, she left the law to pursue writing and campaigning\, working in the charity sector with Amnesty International and Stonewall. She was an editor-at-large at Dazed\, and her writing has been published by the Guardian\, the Independent and Vice\, among others. Faye recently launched an acclaimed podcast series\, Call Me Mother\, interviewing trailblazing LGBTQ elders. This is her first book. \nChristine Burns MBE has campaigned for a quarter of a century for the civil rights of transgender people\, and has been involved with the trans community for more than forty years. She has worked as an equalities consultant\, helped to put together new employment legislation and the Gender Recognition Act\, and wrote the first ever official guidance about trans people for the Department of Health. She is the editor of Trans Britain: Our Journey from the Shadows \nThis event is being held at Manchester Central Library. Doors 18.00 / Start 18.30. The Transgender Issue and Trans Britain will both be available to purchase on the night and Shon Faye and Christine Burns will be happy to sign copies after the event. Although not socially distanced\, we will be leaving a little extra space between seats and asking audience members to wear a mask\, at least until seated.

SUMMARY:Dave Haslam 'All You Need is Dynamite' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:In ‘All You Need Is Dynamite: Acid\, the Angry Brigade\, and the End of the Sixties’ – the latest in his Art Decades series of small format books – Dave Haslam explores the fading of Sixties dreams of peace and love\, and the emergence of urban terrorist groups\, particularly the Angry Brigade who carried out dozens of bomb attacks in Britain. Haslam tracks the political campaigns\, the police repression\, and Angry Brigade links to Manchester and the city’s underground paper ‘Mole Express’ (a bible for local acid-freaks\, and fans of the Weather Underground and the Edgar Broughton Band); he uncovers a heady mix of left-wing politics\, psychedelic music\, police raids and political violence. \nAt this launch event Dave Haslam will be discussing this new book\, and welcoming special guest Bruce Mitchell; a renowned musician who played regularly at venues including Roger Eagle’s club the Magic Village (1968-1970). Copies of the book will for sale; a book signing will conclude the event. \nThe event will also mark the launch the Manchester Digital Music Archive online exhibition of back issues of ‘Mole Express’. \nAlthough Covid regulations have been relaxed\, we have cut the capacity of the venue by 40% to allow more social distancing\, and we would ask attendees to wear a mask at least on arrival at the Library. \nTickets are £6 (£3 concessions for unwaged\, low-waged and NHS staff) \n \n

SUMMARY:Queering the North
DESCRIPTION:The OUTing the Past International Festival of LGBT+ History (est. Manchester in 2005) has teamed up with the Museum of Free Derry to create the first retrospective showcase of NI Queer Activism. A rare insight into the previously unacknowledged tenacious heroism of queer activism in Northern Ireland before\, during and following “The Troubles”. The project was greatly enriched by the support of several archival collections and regional LGBT+ groups and queer veterans. \nThe Queering the North Exhibition aims to bring to a wider a public an expansive and nuanced reading of the history of the LGBT+ community in the North of Ireland/Northern Ireland. It brings together archives and recollections from a range of key activists within a scaffolding provided by academic research. The exhibition includes an expansive chronology of key events\, commencing with the deliberate exclusion of NI from the decriminalising legislation offered by the 1967 Sexual Offences Act through to the introduction of Equal Marriage to NI (January 2020). \nMuseum of Derry Curator Adrian Kerr described the exhibition as a natural step for his institution: “This is a part of our collective past that has been kept hidden\, and this is reflected in the nature of the information available for the exhibition. It is the hope of all involved that this will act as a provocative spur towards the creation of the first comprehensive reading of our LGBT+ history.” \nThe Mayor of Derry City\, Cllr Michaela Boyle: “I had the great pleasure of hosting a reception in the Guildhall for the Exhibition Launch. I believe that this exhibition goes a long way towards creating a better understanding of the sensitivities and changes faced by the LGBT+ community and how we can all work collectively to create a better informed and respectful environment on this important issue.” \nSue Sanders (Founder & Chair of Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Trans + History Month UK | Professor Emeritus of the Harvey Milk Institute): “A thrilling and crucial exhibition that reflects the vital importance of working together to seek human rights for all.” \nThe Exhibition Tour will commence as part of the large Féile an Phobail (West Belfast Festival) – 5 to 13 August 2021 – before coming to Manchester for Pride – it will then start its re-scheduled Tour of the North (deferred due to the COVID pandemic). \nFree – please drop in

SUMMARY:Hamdel Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:See a free LIVE gig by Iranian maestro musician Seyed Ali Jaberi and the Hamdel Ensemble on Saturday 17 July with two COVID safe repeated concerts at 2pm or 3.30pm. \nFans of world music get – at last – an opportunity to hear global music which is extremely limited due to the restrictions on international travel. The concert is presented by Community Arts North West (CAN) with Manchester Central Library and Crossing Footprints to celebrate Manchester Libraries’ award as a Library of Sanctuary\, welcoming people seeking sanctuary and new migrants to the UK. The intimate (and COVID safe) performance is rooted in the life\, poetry\, and spiritual beliefs of the 13th-century Persian poet\, Rumi\, and connects audiences to the rich traditions of Sufism through music and whirling dervish dance. The performance is a ticket only with a limited capacity to keep audiences safe and tickets are selling fast. Seyed Ali jaberi has a huge worldwide following. His albums are hugely popular with both traditional Sufi music and world music fans. In 2019\, he toured to UK venues and festivals including Birmingham Symphony Hall\, The Sage\, Gateshead\, HOME\, Manchester\, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In the autumn\, there will be more Library of Sanctuary events in Manchester’s branch libraries and we’ll share news of the events soon. \nFree – booking required

SUMMARY:Classics & Storytelling Performance: Alcestis in Bits
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW CANCELLED \n‘Due to the ongoing global situation with COVID-19\, the Manchester Branch of the Classical Association has made the local decision to suspend all its public-facing activities for the remainder of 2019/20’ \n  \nRemember the morning you walked away\, while she yelled down the street? Remember the time he held you so hard you thought your bones would snap? Remember the plate\, the cup\, the glass – falling\, cracking\, fracturing? Remember that night? The phone ringing? Remember? \nAlcestis: In Bits is about breaking up and breaking down. The losses that leave your life shattered\, and the painstaking work of picking up the pieces. Queens and gods\, broken crockery and late-night phone calls collide in this live storytelling fusion of ancient myth and modern experience. \nInspired by Phrynichus’ lost tragedy\, Alcestis: In Bits playfully\, poignantly combines surviving fragments of an ancient tale with story-shards of contemporary heartbreak and endurance. \nStephe Harrop is a professional storyteller\, spitting out new words and re-spinning old tales to try and make sense of a crazy world. “A deep thinker with a light-touch and a wealth of material at her fingertips” – Alys Torrance\, Story Jam. \nStephe is also a Senior Lecturer in Drama at Liverpool Hope University. You can read more about her work here: http://www.stepheharrop.co.uk/ \nManchester Classical Association presents Stephe Harrop in performance\, and in discussion with Dr April Pudsey\, Manchester Met. University. Light refreshments from 5.30pm\, from 6pm a 20 minute performance of Stephe’s recent work Alcestis: in Bits. This will be followed by discussion\, and informal Q&A with the audience. \nAll talks in our series are free and open to the public. We are a local charity and welcome members and anyone who wishes to be involved. Membership helps us fund an annual series of events and a regular series of children’s activity workshops in public libraries https://www.manchesterca.org.uk/

SUMMARY:Scrooged – Christmas Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Grimmfest annual Christmas movie gathering. This year’s choice is an eighties classic\, which pays off-kilter homage to tradition – Richard Donner’s cult classic\, Scrooged. It sees Dickens’ tale of miserliness and redemption relocated to 80s New York\, and Ebeneezer Scrooge magnificently re-imagined in the form of Bill Murray’s hard-nosed TV executive\, Frank Cross. \nWith a suitably scabrous and cynical screenplay by notorious Saturday Night Live and National Lampoon scribe\, Michael Donoghue and Dickens buff\, Mitch Glazer\, who would later go on to adapt Great Expectations for Alfonso Cuaron\, and boasting an all-star cast of cult luminaries\, including Robert Mitchum\, Carol Kane\, Karen Allen\, Bobcat Goldthwaite\, Michael J. Pollard\, John Glover\, and New York Dolls frontman David Johansen\, it’s a brash and black-hearted take on a heart-warming tale. \nPick up a free mince pie on arrival\, and make sure you check out the Grimmfest stall\, for discounted stocking fillers including DVDs\, movie posters and t-shirts – fantastic gifts for the horror movie fan in your life! \nDoors open: 5.30pm\nCertificate PG
