SUMMARY:Conserving Manchester Town Hall’s heritage: Restoring the Town Hall Clock. Evening Session
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall has been closed since January 2018 for an extensive restoration programme that will repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work will include the conservation of many heritage features. \nOur series of Heritage Lectures aims to shine a light on some of the fascinating work that’s been going on behind the scenes. We’ve already heard about the work on our paintings and mosaic flooring; now it’s time to turn our attention to the magnificent clock that has kept time above the city since New Year’s Day in 1879. \nHaving maintained our timepiece for over 25 years\, the Cumbria Clock Co have gathered a wealth of history about it. They’ll describe the work they’ve done to date and how they removed the mechanics to their workshops for repair\, conservation\, and precision monitoring. The repair of the carillon is already underway\, and they’ll include some detail about that too. \nJoin us in Central Library for a chance to hear direct from the Cumbria Clocks team and find out just what it’s like to bring 21st century conservation skills to the Our Town Hall Project. The lecture is free to attend but please book your place. \nEVENING SESSION AT 5.30PM

SUMMARY:The Amazing Watkins; Manchester's Forgotten Stars
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this illustrated public lecture\, by Geoff Scargill of The Watkin Society. \nAbsalom and Edward Watkin – father and son – were key figures in the development of Manchester in the 19th century. \nAbsalom helped draw up the petition that brought the horror of the Peterloo Massacre to public attention. Although he was basically a shy person and prone to depression he spent most of his adult life fighting for the rights of the poorest people. A close friend of the great Richard Cobden\, he campaigned for voting reform and for the repeal of the infamous Corn Laws that kept the price of bread so high that in bad harvest years thousands starved to death. \nAbsalom’s son\, Edward\, was one of the best-known and exciting characters of the Victorian Era. He assisted his father in the fight to repeal the Corn Laws and persuaded Manchester businessmen to close their companies at 2pm on Saturdays in what became known as the Saturday Half-day Holiday. (It was 10 years before the rest of the country caught up.) He led the campaign to create the first Parks for the People in the hellholes of industrial Manchester and Salford. Nationally and internationally famous as The Railway King\, he built the last mainline into London\, the Great Central Railway\, from Manchester. A great visionary\, he started a Channel Tunnel and an Eiffel Tower in London and helped create Canada! Knighted in 1869\, he was an MP for 35 years. When he died over 100 obituaries appeared throughout the world. \nFree – booking required – please make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in the venue\, or online

SUMMARY:An Evening with Douglas Stuart
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Libraries and Manchester Literature Festival present an Evening with Booker Prize winning author Douglas Stuart.\nFollowing on from his debut event in Manchester last Spring\, Manchester Literature Festival is excited to welcome back best-selling author Douglas Stuart for an intimate evening at Central Library. Join us to hear Douglas discuss his literary and cultural influences from his favourite working class and Scottish writers to the LGBTQ+ artists that have inspired and influenced him. He’ll also share the challenges of adapting his Booker Prize-winning novel Shuggie Bain into an 8-part television drama for the BBC. \nOne of the boldest writers of his generation\, Douglas Stuart was born and raised in working class Glasgow. After graduating from the Royal College of Art\, he moved to New York\, where he began a career in textiles and fashion design. He spent a decade writing his debut novel while balancing the demands of his day job. Shuggie Bain was finally published in 2020 and went on to win both Debut of the Year and Book of the Year at the British Book Awards alongside the Booker Prize. In 2021 a mural inspired by Shuggie Bain was unveiled on the wall of the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. Created by the city’s Cobolt Collective\, it features Shuggie dancing in the street\, together with a quote from his mother Agnes: “You’ll not remember the city\, you were too wee\, but there’s dancing. All kinds of dancing.” \nDouglas’s second novel\, Young Mungo\, was published in April 2022 to critical acclaim. Set in 1990s Glasgow\, it explores two teenage boys’ quest for love and safety in a world of tension\, violence and toxic masculinity. Douglas’s short stories have appeared in The New Yorker and he is currently working on his third novel. He will be in conversation with award-winning Northern poet\, novelist and mentor Helen Mort. Helen’s latest books are The Illustrated Woman and A Line Above the Sky. \n“There are Agnes Bains\, Shuggies & Young Mungos – broken\, closeted\, bursting to break free – hidden in the fabric of Scotland still. Douglas Stuart’s work reminds us of their beauty\, and the value of their existence.” The Face \nDoors open at 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:Sebastian Barry in Conversation with Kit de Waal
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Literature Festival is delighted to welcome Sebastian Barry back to Manchester to discuss his beautifully crafted new novel\, Old God’s Time. Recently retired policeman Tom Kettle is settling into the quiet of his new home\, a Victorian castle overlooking the Irish Sea. For months he has barely seen a soul\, catching only glimpses of his eccentric landlord and a nervous young mother who has moved in next door. But when two former colleagues turn up at his door with questions about a decades-old case\, he finds himself pulled into the darkest currents of his past. \nOne of Ireland’s finest storytellers\, Sebastian Barry is the author of Days Without End\, A Thousand Moons\, A Long Long Way and The Secret Scripture. The Laureate for Irish Fiction from 2018-2021\, Sebastian is also twice winner of the Walter Scott Prize and the Costa Book of the Year. He will discuss his extraordinary writing and his powerful new tale of memory\, love\, mystery and reckoning with host Kit de Waal. Kit is the author of the novels My Name is Leon and The Trick to Time and the memoir Without Warning and Only Sometimes. \n“Old God’s Time is a portrait of a good man facing the failings of his past. It is wonderfully alive because Barry is so attuned to the human condition\, to the poetry in ordinary lives. Full of love and grief and heartache\, this is an unforgettable novel from one of our finest writers.” Douglas Stuart \nMLF Members can book Advance Tickets from Wednesday 1 February. Tickets go on general sale on Friday 3 February. MLF Get Closer Membership starts at £20 pa. To buy an MLF Get Closer Membership and book advance tickets visit here

SUMMARY:Section 28 - 35 years on in Manchester
DESCRIPTION:This year marks 35 years since the protest against Section 28 in Manchester. Join organisers and attendees from the time to hear more. The event forms part of LGBT History month 2023. It aims to provide insight into a specific period of LGBT history (1987-2003) in which the demonstration in Manchester was highly significant\, and which gained national recognition at the time. It will be an opportunity for those who were there organising the demonstration in 1988 to talk about the climate and their experience. There will be an introductory presentation on Section 28\, covering the build up to its inception\, and why it caused so much controversy and protest. This element recognises that the legislation has been off the statute books for a generation now\, and so an explanation will both help to understand the clause as well as the impact it had. There will also be an opportunity for questions from the audience to the speakers\, and a closing section focusing on the future. \nFree – book via link below

SUMMARY:An Evening with Don Paterson
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Libraries\, Faber Books and Blackwells Bookshop are proud to present An Evening with Don Paterson to celebrate the publication of TOY FIGHTS – an exquisitely sharp\, deeply humane and brutally hilarious boyhood memoir from one of the greatest writers of his generation. \nDon Paterson will be in conversation with Roma Havers\, Learning Manager from Manchester Poetry Library. \nAbout the book: \nThis is a book about family\, money and music but also about schizophrenia\, hell\, narcissists\, debt and the working class\, anger\, swearing\, drugs\, books\, football\, love\, origami\, the peculiar insanity of Dundee\, sugar\, religious mania\, the sexual excesses of the Scottish club band scene and\, more generally\, the lengths we go to not to be bored. \nDon Paterson spent his boyhood on a council housing estate. When he wasn’t busy dreading his birthdays\, dodging kids who wanted to kill him in a game of Toy Fights\, working with his country-and-western singer dad\, screwing up in the Boys’ Brigade\, obsessing over God\, origami\, The Osmonds\, stamps\, sex or Scottish football cards\, he was developing a sugar addiction\, failing his exams\, playing guitar\, falling in love\, dodging employment and descending into madness. While he didn’t manage to figure out who he was meant to be\, the first twenty years of his life – before he took a chance\, packed his guitar and boarded a train to London – did\, for better or worse\, shape who he would become. \n‘A tremendously engaging memoir\, seasoned with Don Paterson’s customary wit\, total recall and love of language. A classic of its kind.’ – William Boyd \n‘Wonderful\, aggressively wise and always – especially at its most serious – devastatingly funny.’ – Geoff Dyer \nAbout the author: \nDon Paterson was born in Dundee in 1963. His poetry has won many awards\, including the Whitbread Poetry Prize\, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize\, the Costa Poetry Award\, all three Forward Prizes and\, on two occasions\, the T. S. Eliot Prize. He was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2009. He is Professor of Poetry at the University of St Andrews and\, for over twenty-five years\, was Poetry Editor at Picador Macmillan. He also works as a jazz musician. \nRoma Havers is the Learning Manager for Manchester Poetry Library. Roma is particularly excited by the collaborative and creative possibilities of the learning programmes at Manchester Poetry Library. She is an experienced facilitator and poetry mentor and a trained Anti-Racism training Facilitator. Editor for Young Identity’s poetry press No Disclaimers\, writes and performs and sits on several youth forums and consultancy groups across Manchester. She has produced events and youth projects with Young Identity HOMEmcr\, Manchester Histories\, Amnesty International\, MIF and many others. \nDoors: 5.30\, starts: 6.00 \nTickets are £5.00 (£3.00 for Faber members / students / unwaged / 60+) or free when preordering a copy of the book.
