DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and discussion exploring Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \n\n\n\n\nOrganised in collaboration with The Modernist and the current exhibition at Central Library\, Architecture for the people: the works of Manchester City Architect’s Department (1902-2003)\, this Manchester Urban Film Series screening and discussion will revisit Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \nWe’ll be screening the 1947 documentary from the North West Film Archive collection\, A City Speaks\, which was a promotional film sponsored by the city council. As the BFI description summarizes: “Urban utopia beckons in this idealistic vision of postwar Manchester – fascinating to revisit as Northern Powerhouses and city devolution return to the agenda…Under the soaring\, sweeping direction of Paul Rotha\, it takes in themes of industry\, energy\, leisure and housing\, present\, past and future.” \nWe’ll use this as our starting point to reflect on Manchester’s historical urban development and the role of government within that as well as the resonances\, challenges or opportunities of the dramatically transformed landscape we face today. With a resurgence of interest in “new municipalism” and public ownership\, “it is worth remembering\,” as the exhibit notes\, “how much of the city’s operations were governed from the town hall. Manchester Corporation once controlled gas and electricity undertakings\, tramways and trolleybuses\, schools\, police\, fire and ambulance services\, waste collection\, parks and recreation\, housing\, libraries and more. DESCRIPTION:Nothing remained unchanged but the clouds by Alan J. Ward is an artist book in the fullest sense: a work conceived\, shaped\, and authored through artistic practice. Developed through sustained collaboration with the community of Grandpré in the French Ardennes\, the book traces stories held within German WWI postcards and transforms them into a living archive of memory\, material culture\, and shared authorship. \nThe launch will take the form of an illustrated conversation moderated by an arts commissioner familiar with Ward’s practice. Ward will be joined by a small panel of academic\, artist\, and language collaborators\, alongside voices from Grandpré. Together\, the discussion will weave local histories with contemporary perspectives\, while reanimating the enduring connection between Manchester and Charleville-Mézières\, the departmental capital. \nWith the support of Alliance Française\, a special display of selected artefacts from Archives+ and the North West Film Archive has been assembled specifically for the evening. These materials document the shared histories between Manchester and the Ardennes\, and sit alongside the themes explored in the book. \nThe evening will conclude with a question-and-answer session\, offering the audience an opportunity to engage directly with the panel\, followed by the chance to purchase signed\, discounted copies of the artist book. \nFree – reserve a seat via eventbrite here

DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 3 February – will focus on the work of the woodworking expertise of Swift Crafted\, with a presentation by Operations Director\, Paul Smith. Restoring the doors and panelling throughout the Town Hall’s many rooms and timber flooring too\,  Find out more about their trade\, their work and some of the features they’ve discovered in and around the Town Hall. \nWooden it be nice – restoring our doors\, panelling and timber floors: \nPaul Smith\, Swift Crafted’s Operations Director\, will present this lecture. DESCRIPTION:Long before today’s sober-curious conversations\, Bookstagram posts\, and bestselling quit-lit titles\, people were already using words\, stories\, and literature to challenge drinking culture. \nThis talk explores the original temperance movement\, which emerged as a powerful social force in the Northwest before sweeping across Britain and beyond. Drawing on historical examples\, it looks at how early temperance advocates used novels\, pamphlets\, tracts\, and personal stories to influence public opinion\, reshape attitudes to alcohol\, and support people in rethinking their relationship with drink. \nBy revisiting these early forms of “quit lit”\, the talk reveals striking parallels between 19th-century temperance literature and today’s modern sober narratives – showing that storytelling has long been a central tool in movements for change. \nWhether you’re interested in social history\, literature\, wellbeing\, or the contemporary sober movement\, this session offers a fascinating perspective on how the past continues to shape present-day conversations around alcohol. \nChaired – Yvonne Norris (Researcher\, PhD\, MMU) \nSpeaker – Dr Annmarie McAllister – expert and a leading scholar on the temperance movement \nAlongside a guest panel including leading voices from present-day sober communities from across the Northwest.

Its soundtrack helped bring reggae to the world stage. \nBacurau (2019\, Brazil)\nIn a remote village\, residents face a chilling threat that turns their quiet life into a fight for survival. A genre-bending mix of Western\, thriller\, and political allegory\, Bacurau is a modern masterpiece of resistance and one of the last major roles of the late Udo Kier. \nEnamorada (1946\, Mexico)\nA fiery romance unfolds during the Mexican Revolution as a revolutionary general clashes with a strong-willed woman. Fernández’s lush visuals and María Félix’s commanding presence make this a gem of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. \nWe’ve made it easier to vote. He was a host of Bang Said the Gun: Manchester\, and the creative mind behind the acclaimed spoken word nights Slamchester\, Evidently\, and the Word War slams. He has featured on BBC Radio 4\, performed for Musicians Without Borders and Amnesty International\, and at the Kendal Calling\, Edinburgh Fringe\, and Glastonbury festivals. Kieren has also been a special guest at former NME journalist and Haçienda DJ Dave Haslam’s Not Quite Light Weekender\, and been commissioned by Guy Garvey of Elbow to curate a spoken word event for Meltdown at the Southbank Centre\, by Sky to write and perform a poem to launch their channel Blaze\, and by Salford Red Devils Rugby League FC to celebrate their appearance in the Super League Grand Final. His new poetry collection\, Spit & Sawdust\, was published in September by Flapjack Press. \nEvent host Tony Curry is a performance poet\, playwright and workshop facilitator. Raised in Crawley by English and South African parents\, he has lived and worked in Manchester for three decades\, running literature-in-the-community projects with a specific leaning towards mental health and wellbeing. His play\, The Teddy Bear\, was staged at Manchester’s Contact Theatre\, whilst his solo spoken word shows include Brit Boy\, Complicit Relations\, Moving and The Odyssey\, performed at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. Tony has recently toured his solo show Tall Tales for All Men\, adapted from his collection Tall Tales for Tall Men Who Fall Well Short (Flapjack Press\, 2012)\, at the Brighton Fringe and Chorlton Arts festivals.

This eerie folk horror explores loneliness\, suppressed desire\, and ancient Sámi beliefs. Its haunting visuals earned acclaim at Cannes and the Golden Globes. \nMy Night at Maud’s (1969\, France)\nA chance evening with a bold\, intellectual woman forces a devout Catholic to confront his ideals. Through quiet dialogue and moral tension\, Rohmer crafts a philosophical study of faith\, choice\, and romantic projection—widely praised as a French New Wave gem. \nDead Mountaineer’s Hotel (1979\, USSR)\nA detective’s routine inquiry at a remote hotel spiral into a surreal mystery that feels like a Lynchian dive into the heart of Soviet sci-fi. This sci-fi noir critiques rigid authority and human fear of the unfamiliar\, gaining cult status for its genre-defying style. \nUnder the Blossoming Cherry Trees (1975\, Japan)\nA bandit falls under the spell of a woman who demands increasingly grotesque acts. Set beneath ominous blossoms\, this stylised trip blends folklore and madness\, with Shinoda’s theatrical direction and Takemitsu’s score elevating its eerie beauty. \nGa-Ga: Glory to the Heroes (1986\, Poland)\nOn a dystopian planet\, a convict becomes a state-manufactured hero destined for execution. Szulkin’s biting satire skewers authoritarianism and media spectacle\, earning cult acclaim for its bold\, bleak vision.

DESCRIPTION:Sanctuary movements have long been a part of the movement for migrant rights in Britain\, but the meaning of sanctuary and the forms it has taken have varied dramatically. This event brings together scholars and practitioners of sanctuary\, past and present\, to discuss its history\, trajectories\, current forms\, and possible futures in this country. \nHosted by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust\, and the Raphael Samuel History Centre\, we’ll be joined by: \nStuart Crosthwaite\, a migrant-rights campaigner\, writer and organiser in Sheffield. He is currently Secretary of the South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG). \nAmy Grant\, a historian of the UK sanctuary and anti-deportation movements\, based at the University of East Anglia. \nRachel Humphris\, a political sociologist at Queen Mary University of London. DESCRIPTION:Join the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Centre and Education Trust for a powerful evening of reflection\, resistance\, and creative expression.  \nThis event builds on the vital conversation we began last year with journalist and author Gary Younge\, who returns to help us reflect on what important Black histories mean today. His address will be followed by a shared discussion on how we honour these histories in a time of rising racism\, Islamophobia\, and hostility toward migrants and refugees. \nWe will also commemorate the Fifth Pan-African Congress\, held in Manchester in 1945—a landmark moment in Black internationalist history. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore archival records that bring this legacy to life. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Central Library for a day of free activities and events celebrating The Festival of Social Science – an annual celebration of research and knowledge about humans and society and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022. The festival is an opportunity for anyone to explore topics relating to social science\, from health and wellbeing to crime\, equality\, education and identity\, through events run by researchers from UK universities. There’s no cost to attend\, and most are open to everyone\, though some are aimed at specific groups. \nAs the world changes\, so does the way we work. This year\, the festival is hosting a series of events that explore how our jobs\, and our working lives\, are evolving. Many of today’s roles didn’t exist just a decade or two ago. With rapid advances in technology\, the workplace has transformed dramatically over the past 100 years. But one thing remains constant: people want access to good jobs that are safe\, healthy and provide a decent standard of living. Part of the research that ESRC funds is focused on improving the experience of work. Since work is a major part of most people’s lives\, ESRC is committed to understanding how it can be made better for everyone. \n
