If they are already filled you will be offered a place on the reserve list. \nOur special guest for July is Dave Morgan\, a writer\, community educator\, and arts organiser in the North-West of England. He co-founded the performance poetry organisation Write Out Loud\, and curates events for the Bolton-based arts collective Live from Worktown. Dave is co-author of China: an integrated study [George G.Harrap & Co Ltd\, 1975]\, and has two poetry collections with Flapjack Press – Chuang Tse’s Caterpillar [2016]\, several poems from which have recently been translated into Tamil for South Asian journal Thalam Quarterly\, and On Not Being Observed\, which was published earlier this year. \nEvent host Tony Curry is a poet\, playwright\, and workshop facilitator who runs literature-in-the-community projects with a specific leaning towards mental health and wellbeing. His work has been exhibited at Manchester’s museum and art galleries\, and his play\, The Teddy Bear\, was staged at Contact Theatre. Tony’s solo spoken word shows include Brit Boy\, Complicit Relations\, Moving and The Odyssey\, performed at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. In 2024 he will be touring his new show\, Tall Tales for All Men\, adapted from his collection Tall Tales for Tall Men Who Fall Well Short. \n

SUMMARY:A Monumental Effort: Restoring the Albert Memorial Afternoon Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall has been closed since January 2018 for an extensive restoration programme that will repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work will include the conservation of many heritage features. \nOur series of Heritage Lectures aims to shine a light on some of the fascinating work that’s been going on behind the scenes. We’ve already heard about the work on our paintings\, mosaic flooring\, clock\, stained-glass windows\, organ and furniture. Now it’s time to turn our attention outside of the building to the iconic Albert Memorial in Albert Square. \nStrictly speaking\, the memorial is quite separate. It was built and completed well before the Town Hall\, predating it by a decade. But the Our Town Hall Project encompasses the public realm too\, and the decision was made – very early in the project – to include the Albert Memorial as part of it. \nThe first monument to commemorate Prince Albert\, the Albert Memorial is an elaborate Gothic enclosure\, protecting a marble statue of the Prince. The high levels of decoration on the 73’ high memorial represent his interests. There are portraits of famous men and the coats of arms of his dominions in Saxony. The memorial was created by Matthew Noble and completed in 1866. \nJoin us in Central Library for a chance to hear from our lead Architect\, Jamie Coath from Purcell\, and Steve Eccleshre from Bullen Conservation\, the stonemasons currently working on the memorial’s restoration and repair. \nThe free lecture starts at 1pm and is repeated at 5.30pm Please book your place for either by clicking the links below: \n\n1pm lecture. This ambitious project aims to inspire a love of reading and creativity in primary school-aged children across Greater Manchester and throughout the UK. \n \nBlue Peter Book Club Live Saturday 18th May.  \nJoin the Blue Peter presenters Abby\, Joel and Shini (and Henry the Dog!) for a day celebrating the love of reading. There’ll be guest authors\, creative crafts\, special story times\, masses of books and a chance to meet some magical classic book characters! \nChildren’s Laureate Joseph Coelho and children’s author Eve Ainsworth will be chatting to the Blue Peter presenters about their fantastic books. \nWe’ll ALSO be joined by George and Gyasi from CBeebies Bedtime Stories! \n   \nFREE EVENT. EVERONE WELCOME!! \nBlue Peter Badge Trail \nWe’ll also be launching The Blue Peter badge trail on the day. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Literature Festival\, in partnership with Library Live\, is thrilled to welcome author David Mitchell to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his epic\, polyphonic novel Cloud Atlas. \nOriginally published in 2004\, Cloud Atlas quickly became a firm favourite with readers\, critics and booksellers. The Independent called it “a novel of breath-taking ambition and scale” whilst the New York Times raved “Mitchell is\, clearly\, a genius. He writes as though at the helm of some perpetual dream machine.” Gloriously inventive and genre-defying\, Cloud Atlas features six interconnected stories that take the reader on an adventure from the nineteenth century to a post-apocalypse future. The novel also erases the boundaries of time\, genre and language\, to offer an enthralling look at humanity’s will to power\, and where it will lead us. \nDavid Mitchell is the author of 9 novels including number9dream\, Black Swan Green\, The Bone Clocks and Utopia Avenue. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice and in 2018\, he won the Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence\, given in recognition of a writer’s entire body of work. DESCRIPTION:Word Central Open mic poetry and spoken word.  \nPresented by Manchester Libraries and Flapjack Press. \nHosted by Tony Curry with special guest poet Andy Millican. \nOur guest for April is Andy Millican\, a multiple poetry competition winner who has had several poems broadcast on the BBC and is host of Glossop Open Mic at Glossop Labour Club. In 2018 he was invited to write and record a series of poems for the Hollingworth Lottery funded project Centenary Word War\, and has also collaborated with Stockport Art Guild and artist Mark Sheeky. His debut collection\, Nebulous\, was published in 2019\, raising money for Liverpool Eye Cancer Unit\, and his latest\, Something Wicked This Way Grows\, was published in 2023. \nEvent host Tony Curry is a poet\, playwright and workshop facilitator who runs literature-in-the-community projects with a specific leaning towards mental health and wellbeing. His work has been exhibited at Manchester’s museum and art galleries\, and his play\, The Teddy Bear\, was staged at Contact Theatre. Tony’s solo spoken word shows include Brit Boy\, Complicit Relations\, Moving and The Odyssey\, performed at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre\, and he will be gigging his new show\, Tall Tales for All Men\, adapted from his collection Tall Tales for Tall Men Who Fall Well Short throughout the latter half of 2024. \nBook your open mic slot from noon on Tues 9th April via mail@flapjackpress.co.uk. \nN.B. DESCRIPTION:The importance of creative health is receiving critical and political attention\, particularly locally\, with Greater Manchester committed to becoming the first creative health city region [gmintegratedcare.org.uk]. \nResearch demonstrates the social and economic value of using creativity\, arts\, and heritage to enrich people’s lives. Whilst the recording and quantifying of these benefits is relatively recent\, practitioners in the arts and heritage have implicitly understood the wider benefits to society of their work for many years. \nAt this Creative Café\, we will hear a series of short ‘lightning talks’ from practitioners and researchers. Librarians and archivists from Manchester’s Archives+ partnership\, who have directly and indirectly contributed to projects enhancing well-being will be sharing their experiences. \nUniversity of Manchester researcher Dr Erin Beeston\, who is creating a heritage and wellbeing toolkit for older people for use in community and care settings for Manchester Histories\, and Dr Angela Whitecross\, who has worked on community oral history projects including ‘NHS at 70’ and ‘Voices of Covid’ will discuss their projects. \nWe also hear perspectives from Manchester Histories CEO\, Karen Shannon\, who is developing a heritage and well-being focus for the charity in Manchester Histories Hub. Julie McCarthy\, the region’s strategic lead for creative health\, will explain the policy context and current work embedding creative health into public health in Greater Manchester. \nThere will be a discussion across the panel with the audience exploring these projects further\, as well as a chance to explore pilot wellbeing activities with Manchester Histories and the Archives+ partners. The Creative Café format includes an informal lunch and networking opportunities. \nAll are welcome to this event\, it may be of special interest to researchers in creative health\, those working in heritage\, the arts\, health\, or social care\, as well as members of the public. \nDr Erin Beeston’s research work has been made possible through funding from The Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)\, which supports knowledge exchange between higher education providers and external partners to benefit society\, Manchester City Council\, and Manchester Histories. \nRegister: \nThis event is free and open to anyone.
