This is Alistair – like never before – commenting on a world that is accelerating like never before. \nAlistair McGowan is best known for his impressions\, winning a BAFTA in 2003 for his BBC One series The Big Impression. He has also worked as an actor\, regularly on radio\, occasionally on television\, and nationwide on stage (being nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance as The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors). \nAlistair has written his own stand-up comedy throughout his 35-year career. SUMMARY:Heartstone: KFOR AND KOSOVO +25 Event
DESCRIPTION:On June 12th\, the photo-documentary exhibition\, ‘KFOR and Kosovo +25’\, is at the centre of an extraordinary event being staged at Manchester Central Library as part of Manchester’s Festival of Libraries.\n\n\nProduced by internationally acclaimed photographer\, Nick Sidle\, covering the period 2000-1\, in the aftermath of the 1999 Kosova war\, the exhibition tells an uplifting visual story of the resilience of ordinary people recovering from a period of horrific ethnic cleansing and the role of the KFOR peacekeepers in bringing the stability and security from which peace followed. Many in the Greater Manchester region supported at the time with funds\, blankets\, toys and other items. \nThis event will bring together online for the first time some of the civilians pictured in the images\, who have been located 25 years later in Kosova\, and others who were part of this period in the North West and other parts of the UK. In Kosova\, the event is taking shape from the National Library of Kosova opened by Kosova’s Minister for Culture\, Saranda Bogujevci\, herself a survivor of the Podujeva Massacre and one of those evacuated to Manchester in 1999. \nAdmission is free and there is no booking required\, but please come early to be secure of a place at this event. \nHeader Photo by ©Nick Sidle.

DESCRIPTION:This June\, Manchester Central Library hosts the showcase for SNE Studios Storytelling & Moving Image pilot – a programme delivered in partnership with St Peter’s RC High School and Manchester City of Literature.\nOver eight weeks\, students from St Peter’s have worked alongside professional creatives to understand the power of storytelling and narrative voice\, get hands on with cameras and editing software\, and transform poems by Manchester writers into short films of their own\, exploring themes of place\, belonging\, and community voice. \nThe evening presents the finished films to the public for the first time\, alongside an awards ceremony and a panel discussion\, co-hosted by SNE‘s Executive Director Baka Bah and a student\, and featuring representatives from Manchester Metropolitan University (RISE)\, St Peter’s RC High School\, and Blackmagic Design. \nThis is the proof of concept for a wider vision: an annual moving image and media literacy programme for young people\, built on the belief that the next generation of storytellers deserves the tools\, the training\, and the platform to tell their own stories. \nFREE TICKETS CAN BE BOOKED HERE.

His work featured in Kit de Waal’s working-class anthology Common People published by Unbound\, leading the acclaimed Kerry Hudson to tip him ‘for big things’ in The Observer. \nHe has featured at various book festivals\, on BBC Radio\, and recently completed a placement at Semiotext(e). These are the sorts of films unlikely to be seen anywhere else\, underseen and under-loved masterpieces from every single point of the globe. There’s no delineation by genre\, place or year\, all that matters is the quality of the film. \nThis month’s choices are: \nClearcut (1991\, Canada) \nA roaring cult classic of Canadian cinema\, a supernatural revenge thriller with big moral questions and furious anger as Polish director Ryszard Bugajski confronts the limits of liberal pacifism. With an incredible central performance from Graham that oscillates between trickster spirit and revolutionary spectre\, the viewer is forced to confront their own views of heroism and justice. \nLe Franc (1994\, Senegal) \nA man buys a lottery ticket and to protect it glues it to his wall\, when the ticket wins he finds he has to transport both the door and the ticket to claim his prize. This simple image is used to explore themes of global economic catastrophe. Conceived in response to the 1994 devaluation of the West African CFA franc\, the film transforms structural violence into slapstick surrealism. The protagonist is a spiritual successor to Chaplin’s The Tramp\, with all the tragedy and comedy that entails. \nElectra\, My Love (1974\, Hungary) \nExperience the unique cinematic stylings of Miklós Jancsó\, in a film with some of the most spellbinding staging and shots ever conceived. Epic Greek Tragedy on the Hungarian plains presented in its entirety through only twelve extended shots. Movement replaces montage: bodies\, horses\, flags\, and crowds swirl in ritualised patterns that mirror cycles of uprising and repression. A whirl of film as dance\, theatre and ritual.

DESCRIPTION:The Northern Publishers’ Fair returns this autumn with its biggest celebration yet of independent publishing. \nOrganised bi-annually by Fly on the Wall Press\, this free-entry event will showcase the diverse landscape of independent publishing across the North\, featuring 16 publishers and literary agents spanning genres from literary fiction and poetry to children’s books and non-fiction. Attendees can browse and purchase books directly from publishers including Manchester University Press\, Valley Press and Flapjack Press\, among others. \nWho is the Northern Publishers’ Fair for? \nFor too long\, the publishing industry has been London-centric. In 2019\, Isabelle Kenyon (Fly on the Wall Press) set up the Northern Publishers’ Fair at the fabulous venue of Manchester Central Library. Each Spring\, independent and trade publishers from the North of England gather to sell books\, network with the future generation of publishers\, and meet writers and readers. With space for reading and coffee\, the fair is the perfect place to grab a book that offers something different to mainstream bookshop offerings\, and a fab place to get an idea of just what the North has to offer. Inko will teach you step-by-step how to draw one of the most famous yokai characters\, Kappa\, in the manga style! \nThese workshops are a great chance to learn more about manga and manga drawing skills\, Japanese myths and stories\, and ask questions to a professional manga artist. All materials will be provided on the day\, and you don’t need to have any experience to join in; all levels of drawing skill are welcome! \nPlease note that these workshops are for young people aged 12-18 only.
