SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Hispanic Film Club: Mamá cumple 100 años
DESCRIPTION:*** Due to unforeseen circumstances this event has now been postponed until next month.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused. **** \nManchester Central Library and the Instituto Cervantes of Manchester proudly present the Hispanic Film Club. Join us for this month’s film\, Mamá cumple 100 años. \nThe Manchester Central Library and Instituto Cervantes Manchester present the Hispanic Film Club\, a programme designed to celebrate the richness of Spanish-language cinema. This new series is dedicated to the acclaimed director Carlos Saura\, one of the most influential figures in Spanish film\, internationally recognised for his work exploring memory\, identity and the relationship between art and society through a deeply personal and innovative aesthetic. Throughout his career\, Saura received numerous awards and collaborated with renowned artists such as Geraldine Chaplin and Antonio Gades\, leaving an indelible mark on world cinema. \nThe first three screenings will feature Elisa\, vida mía (1977)\, Mamá cumple 100 años (1979) and Goya en Burdeos (1999)\, films that exemplify his ability to combine introspection\, history and art in unique narratives. We have chosen Saura because his cinema offers a profound reflection on Spanish history and culture\, perfectly aligned with the essence of the Hispanic Film Club: showcasing the diversity and depth of the Hispanic world through works that transcend borders. \nThis screening: Mamá cumple 100 años [Mama turns 100] (Carlos Saura\, 1979). \nSynopsis: Ana is alive and married with Antonio; they arrive in the manor in the countryside of Spain where she worked as a nanny many years ago\, for the centennial birthday of the matriarch. In their reunion\, she finds that Jose died three years ago; Juan left his wife Luchy; Fernando is still living with his mother and unsuccessfully trying to fly a hang glider; and the three little girls are grown-up. Further\, she discovers that the dysfunctional family is completely broken\, and Luchy in embezzling mother’s money. SUMMARY:Knowing Yesterday\, Shaping Tomorrow: The Inaugural Lou Kushnick Memorial Lecture with Professor Abdul Alkalimat
DESCRIPTION:The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust\, in partnership with the University of Manchester\, is launching a new annual lecture in honour of our founder\, Professor Lou Kushnick. Lou was a tireless advocate for anti‑racist education and a driving force behind both the Education Trust and the RACE Centre. Since his death in early 2025\, he has been deeply missed. \nThis new lecture series celebrates his legacy\, beginning with an inaugural talk by Professor Abdul Alkalimat. Professor Alkalimat – internationally respected scholar-activist and a founding figure in Black Studies in the United States – was a friend and colleague of Lou’s. \nProfessor Alkalimat opens this new lecture series by commemorating Lou’s important work. He will respond to four key questions: Who was Lou Kushnick? Why am I speaking about him? Why was he concerned about racism? And why should we be concerned about racism? His perspective will reflect his African American identity\, but will also connect with the trans-Atlantic perspective he shared with Lou. \nWe welcome friends observing Ramadan and our programme will allow for Maghrib and Iftar. \nThere is a dedicated prayer space in Manchester Central Library. \nComplimentary hot food\, tea and coffee will be provided. \n\nBook your free space on eventbrite here or click on ‘Book Now’ below.\n\n===========================\n\nAbout Professor Abdul Alkalimat\n\nAbdul Alkalimat (born Gerald A. McWorter) is a founder of the field of Black Studies and author of many books and papers about Black liberation. He wrote the first college textbook for the field\, Introduction to Afro-American Studies\, which has seen seven editions\, the last one free and online. A lifelong scholar-activist with a PhD from the University of Chicago\, he has lectured\, taught\, and directed academic programs across the US\, the Caribbean\, Africa\, Europe\, and China. Two of his early contributions were serving as chair of the Chicago chapter of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)\, and co-founding the Organization of Black American Culture (OBAC) in 1967. Raised in Chicago’s Cabrini Rowhouses\, he is now professor emeritus of African American Studies and Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. \nHis most recent books are: \n* The History of Black Studies\, published by Pluto Press 2021 \n* Dialectics of Liberation: The African Liberation Support Committee\, published by Africa World Press 2022 \n* The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago\, co-edited with Romi Crawford and Rebecca Zorach and published by Northwestern University Press 2017 \n* New Philadelphia\, written by Gerald A. McWorter and Kate Williams-McWorter for the New Philadelphia (IL) Association and published by Path Press 2018. \nMuch of his work is freely available at http://www.alkalimat.org.

SUMMARY:Mystery International Film Club!
DESCRIPTION:It’s a MONSTER HIT!!\n\n\n\nThis event is for individuals aged 15 and over. \nWelcome to the voting page for the latest edition of Manchester Central Library’s International Film Club’s Mystery Screening series. \nEvent Details: \n\nDoors open: 17:00\nIntroduction to the film: 17:20\nFilm starts: 17:30\nEntry: Pay what you can (recommended donation of £3)\nPopcorn: FREE!\nDrinks: Grab a coffee\, tea\, or soft drink from the fully stocked café!\n\nThe Mystery Film Clubs screenings at Manchester Central Library specialise in showing a wide and eclectic range of films from all over the world. These are the sorts of films unlikely to be seen anywhere else\, underseen and under-loved masterpieces from every single point of the globe. There’s no delineation by genre or age\, as long as the film is great it can be shown here. \nThis month’s choices are: \nElection (2005 Hong-Kong) \nA triad election is upon us and numerous factions vie for power. While the premise implies action\, what we have here is a masterful political thriller from director Johnnie To that exposes the vulgarity at the core of tradition and politeness as they fail and are manipulated. Rapturous performances all round and one of the most jaw-dropping endings in film history. \nOmar Gatlato (1976 Algeria) \nA simple tale of a normal man\, we follow him for a few days and meet his family\, his friends and his crush\, while we do this he addresses the camera and shows us around his city. As much about the man as it is about Algeria\, as along our journey we meet the vibrant\, colourful locals and the film celebrates a time and a place. \nLabyrinth of Dreams (1997 Japan) \nTomiko falls in love with Niitaka\, even though she also suspects him of being the Tokyo bus driver serial killer\, who killed his female conductors after tiring of them. Gakyruu Ishii’s restrained and ethereal dream of beautiful ghosts cloaked in a hazy melancholy. \nMafioso (1962 Italy) \nThe past catches up with loveable Antonio in this Italian film filled with lightness and warmth before kidnapping the audience and reminding them the reality of the Sicilian Mafia. A film that will subvert your expectations\, shock and entertain you. \nThe Horse Thief (1986 China/Tibet) \nAn unbelievable look at the impossible\, almost unearthly environments of remotest Tibet as we follow young monk Norbu and his family after he is banished from his temple. A favourite of Martin Scorsese and an unparalleled filmic voice. \nBook tickets and vote for your favourite film here or at the link below!

SUMMARY:Architecture for the People? Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and discussion exploring Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \n\n\n\n\nOrganised in collaboration with The Modernist and the current exhibition at Central Library\, Architecture for the people: the works of Manchester City Architect’s Department (1902-2003)\, this Manchester Urban Film Series screening and discussion will revisit Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \nWe’ll be screening the 1947 documentary from the North West Film Archive collection\, A City Speaks\, which was a promotional film sponsored by the city council. As the BFI description summarizes: “Urban utopia beckons in this idealistic vision of postwar Manchester – fascinating to revisit as Northern Powerhouses and city devolution return to the agenda…Under the soaring\, sweeping direction of Paul Rotha\, it takes in themes of industry\, energy\, leisure and housing\, present\, past and future.” \nWe’ll use this as our starting point to reflect on Manchester’s historical urban development and the role of government within that as well as the resonances\, challenges or opportunities of the dramatically transformed landscape we face today. With a resurgence of interest in “new municipalism” and public ownership\, “it is worth remembering\,” as the exhibit notes\, “how much of the city’s operations were governed from the town hall. Manchester Corporation once controlled gas and electricity undertakings\, tramways and trolleybuses\, schools\, police\, fire and ambulance services\, waste collection\, parks and recreation\, housing\, libraries and more. The City Architect’s Department designed for all of these.” What can we learn from these efforts today? \nCheck out the exhibit up at the Central Library until February 28\, 2026: Architecture for the people: the works of Manchester City Architect’s Department (1902-2003) \nFree – booking advised. \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library.

SUMMARY:Nothing remained unchanged but the clouds: Artist talk and UK book launch
DESCRIPTION:Nothing remained unchanged but the clouds by Alan J. Ward is an artist book in the fullest sense: a work conceived\, shaped\, and authored through artistic practice. Developed through sustained collaboration with the community of Grandpré in the French Ardennes\, the book traces stories held within German WWI postcards and transforms them into a living archive of memory\, material culture\, and shared authorship. \nThe launch will take the form of an illustrated conversation moderated by an arts commissioner familiar with Ward’s practice. Ward will be joined by a small panel of academic\, artist\, and language collaborators\, alongside voices from Grandpré. Together\, the discussion will weave local histories with contemporary perspectives\, while reanimating the enduring connection between Manchester and Charleville-Mézières\, the departmental capital. \nWith the support of Alliance Française\, a special display of selected artefacts from Archives+ and the North West Film Archive has been assembled specifically for the evening. These materials document the shared histories between Manchester and the Ardennes\, and sit alongside the themes explored in the book. \nThe evening will conclude with a question-and-answer session\, offering the audience an opportunity to engage directly with the panel\, followed by the chance to purchase signed\, discounted copies of the artist book. \nFree – reserve a seat via eventbrite here

SUMMARY:The Temperance Movement: What Did #QuitLit Look Like 100 Years Ago?
DESCRIPTION:Long before today’s sober-curious conversations\, Bookstagram posts\, and bestselling quit-lit titles\, people were already using words\, stories\, and literature to challenge drinking culture. \nThis talk explores the original temperance movement\, which emerged as a powerful social force in the Northwest before sweeping across Britain and beyond. Drawing on historical examples\, it looks at how early temperance advocates used novels\, pamphlets\, tracts\, and personal stories to influence public opinion\, reshape attitudes to alcohol\, and support people in rethinking their relationship with drink. \nBy revisiting these early forms of “quit lit”\, the talk reveals striking parallels between 19th-century temperance literature and today’s modern sober narratives – showing that storytelling has long been a central tool in movements for change. \nWhether you’re interested in social history\, literature\, wellbeing\, or the contemporary sober movement\, this session offers a fascinating perspective on how the past continues to shape present-day conversations around alcohol. \nChaired – Yvonne Norris (Researcher\, PhD\, MMU) \nSpeaker – Dr Annmarie McAllister – expert and a leading scholar on the temperance movement \nAlongside a guest panel including leading voices from present-day sober communities from across the Northwest.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Forbidden Waters by Rob Parker
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate publication of the second in Rob Parker’s Cam Killick series: Forbidden Waters!\n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to celebrate the launch of Rob Parker’s Forbidden Waters on the 15th of January at Manchester Central Library! Rob will be in conversation with Luca Veste\, author of The Bone Keeper. \nDoors: 5.30pm\, starts: 6pm. \nTickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book in advance. \nAbout Forbidden Waters: \nIt starts with the knife. Found at the bottom of a hidden lake in the Norfolk Broads\, covered in blood and heart tissue so fresh the water hasn’t yet washed it all away. What salvage diver Cam Killick has found is a murder weapon from a very recent crime – but how do you solve a murder without a body? \nThe remoteness of the setting is itself a clue. Only a handful of people know the location of the lake\, let alone how to access it. But no sooner have Cam and DS Claire Rogers started working through this ready-made suspect pool than one of them disappears. \nThe ripples from Cam’s discovery have disturbed a dangerous predator\, one who knows the water even better than Cam himself. The question now is what they want – and how many more people will die before Cam can stop them? \nAbout the author: \nRob Parker is the author of Far From The Tree\, the No. 1 bestselling thriller for Audible Original and the first instalment in the Thirty Miles trilogy\, as well as eight novels for independent publishers. He is the host of both Crime Central Manchester\, a monthly showcase of emerging crime writing talent and blockbuster bestsellers\, and the Blood Brothers podcast. Rob lives in Warrington with his wife\, three children and their dogs\, and was inspired to write The Troubled Deep by years of holidays in the Norfolk Broads – during which he has never\, he is pleased to say\, found a dead body. Forbidden Waters is the second in the Cam Killick series. \nIf you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book\, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call 0161 274 3331.

This month’s (unintentional) theme? Rebellion\, identity\, and survival—stories that challenge norms and explore the human spirit across cultures and decades. \nIf I could show all five I really would as every one of these films is absolutely cracking\, as it stands however I can only show one so get voting: \nThis month’s contenders are: \nThe Working Class Goes To Heaven (1971\, Italy)\nA factory worker’s life spirals after an accident\, exposing the alienation and exploitation of industrial labour. Petri’s biting critique of capitalism and class struggle remains a cornerstone of Italian political cinema. \nThe Story of a Three Day Pass (1967\, France/USA)\nMelvin Van Peebles’ debut feature follows a Black American soldier on leave in France\, navigating love and racial tension. A bold\, stylish exploration of identity and prejudice during the civil rights era. An outsiders French New Wave film and one of the finest\, a rediscovered masterpiece. \nThe Harder They Come (1972\, Jamaica)\nIn honour of the late Jimmy Cliff revisit this reggae-infused crime drama about a musician turned outlaw\, this cult classic captures the grit and dreams of Kingston’s streets. Its soundtrack helped bring reggae to the world stage. \nBacurau (2019\, Brazil)\nIn a remote village\, residents face a chilling threat that turns their quiet life into a fight for survival. A genre-bending mix of Western\, thriller\, and political allegory\, Bacurau is a modern masterpiece of resistance and one of the last major roles of the late Udo Kier. \nEnamorada (1946\, Mexico)\nA fiery romance unfolds during the Mexican Revolution as a revolutionary general clashes with a strong-willed woman. Fernández’s lush visuals and María Félix’s commanding presence make this a gem of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. \nWe’ve made it easier to vote. Just click on the link here to book tickets and fill in your details. You’ll then see a drop down menu of the five films on the shortlist. You just need to select your favourite!
