SUMMARY:Stroboscopic Synergy
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Tracey Welch and five musicians from diverse musical backgrounds come together in an exploration of photography and music. A fascinating collaborative project and exhibition\, inspiring new connections\, shared experience and experimental composition. \nIn 2022\, photography and music came together in the Stroboscopic Project\, an exploration of photographic technique and musical inspiration. Such was its success\, the project has continued to evolve and its latest incarnation\, Stroboscopic Synergy is about to emerge\, in the form of new visuals\, cross genre musical composition and a documentary film. Un-Convention Manchester will be the first opportunity to view the latest still images from the project\, featuring musicians Leonore Wheatley (vocals and synth)\, Inder Goldfinger (Tabla)\, Rich Westley (drums)\, Charlotte Cartwright (piano and vocals) and James Adrian Brown (guitar). The exhibition will then move to Manchester’s Central Library\, where visitors will also get an insight into the stop motion style moving imagery and music. \nStroboscopic Synergy has once again attracted support from Arts Council England. Photographer Tracey Welch\, who co-founded the project with drummer Rich Westley (Reverend and the Makers) feels this underlines the creative value of their latest collaboration: \n“The artists involved in Stroboscopic Synergy are from really diverse musical backgrounds. The stop motion style of photography enables them to reflect on their performance in a really unique way. This\, in\nturn\, inspires musical experimentation and an exchange of creative ideas. It has been really fascinating to document the process in film”. The collaboration culminated in a studio session where artists came together to develop and deliver a completely new\, organic composition. “We’re excited to share the new\, stroboscopic images in Manchester\, alongside some of the music and some stop-motion style film. Like the musicians\, I’m learning from the experience and inspired by the energy and creativity the project has generated.” \nFree please drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:Macdara Yeates and Jennifer Reid
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance featuring Macdara Yeates and Jennifer Reid trading ballads and broadsides on related topics to illustrate the shared cultures of Dublin and Manchester and the song traditions that would have been active in the two cities in the industrial revolution. \nMacdara Yeates is an Irish folk singer. Born and raised in Dublin\, Yeates is one of a crop of artists associated with the recent resurgence of young folk talent in the Irish capital\, alongside acts such as Lankum\, Ye Vagabonds\, and Landless. In 2012\, Macdara became a founding member of The Night Before Larry Got Stretched\, a monthly Dublin folk gathering\, counting such luminaries as Lisa O’Neill\, Ian Lynch and Radie Peat (Lankum) among its earliest attendees. Following the release of Traditional Singing from Dublin\, Macdara was nominated for two RTÉ Radio One Folk Awards\, including a nomination for ‘Best Folk Singer’ alongside Ríognach Connolly\, Cathy Joran and Christy Moore. \n‘Macdara Yeates is a mighty chanter‘ – Christy Moore \nJennifer Reid is a performer of nineteenth century Lancashire dialect and Victorian broadside ballads. Folk music has lost its way\, and people have lost track of their geographical heritage. The working classes made music as a provocation and this is a tradition Jennifer continues. \n\n“Lancashire dialect and Victorian Broadside ballad singer Jennifer Reid is brutally honest\, powerful and authentic. Reid deserves our attention and embodies the gritty\, honest truth of folk music. Reid reminds us that the streets\, pubs and alleyways is where folk lives and not behind the glass of the studio.” – Folkmylife.co.uk \n\n\nJennifer plays the character of Barb in Shane Meadows’ period drama The Gallows Pole. She has supported Pulp\, John Cooper Clarke\, for Chanel’s prestigious Metiers d’Art show\, and is in the second year of touring with Eliza Carthy. In April 2025\, she toured Aotearoa’s north island to critical acclaim and rave reviews. \n\n\n‘She is singing our belonging to our land\, history\, ancestry\, with streetwise modernity’ – Casey Orr \nFree – drop in \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:John Robb: 'Live Forever: The Rise\, Fall\, and Resurrection of Oasis' - Oasis Week Q&A
DESCRIPTION:For those in the mood for a Talk Tonight\, on 15th July\, expect to find esteemed Northern music journalist and frontman of the Membranes / Goldblade JOHN ROBB in-conversation about his brand new book ‘Live Forever: The Rise\, Fall\, and Resurrection of Oasis’ at Manchester Central Library. \nPart of “Oasis Week” at Central Library\, John will be appearing in-person for an intimate talk and Q&A with local tour guide and Oasis expert Joe Feeley about the book in the Henry Watson Music Library. \n‘Live Forever…’ promises a rollercoaster ride through the Gallagher brothers’ turbulent lives and the music that defined a generation. And John Robb was there every step of the way. \nIn this\, the definitive book on Britain’s biggest band\, he peels back the layers of Manchester’s best-known musical export\, revealing a tale of ambition\, ego\, talent and a whole lot of attitude. From the estates of South Manchester to the dizzying heights of global stardom\, Live Forever is a rollercoaster ride through the Gallagher brothers’ turbulent lives and the music that defined a generation. But it is also a portrait of Britain around the turn of the millennium and the cultural forces and places that shaped\, and were shaped by\, two cocksure upstarts from Burnage – from art to fashion\, and from football to politics. \nPlayful\, funny and irreverent\, and drawing on dozens of interviews and first-hand stories\, this book puts Oasis squarely in the pantheon of music royalty as the last great rock ’n’ roll stars. \nThe Q&A will be chaired by local tour guide Joe Feeley. Alongside his expert tours of Manchester city centre\, Joe also leads the legendary Rock And Goal Tour and has recently launched the Wonderwalk Oasis Tour. A musician and guide with real Oasis pedigree\, Joe grew up with the Gallaghers\, was in school with Liam and Noel\, and their families in Ireland also share history. His Wonderwalk tour offers a deep dive into Oasis’s roots and the wider Manchester music scene\, and his personal connection to the band means he has insights and stories you won’t hear anywhere else. \n \nJoe and John will be chatting about ‘Live Forever: The Rise\, Fall\, and Resurrection of Oasis’ and more at Manchester Central Library on Tuesday 15 July. \nCopies will be available at the event courtesy of Blackwells\, and John will be available for signings after the event. \nTickets are free\, but any donations to the library warmly welcomed. \nTickets available from 10AM on Friday 20 June:\nJohn Robb: ‘Live Forever: The Rise\, Fall\, and Resurrection of Oasis’ Q&A Tickets\, Tue\, Jul 15\, 2025 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite\n \n \n****** \n“Oasis Week” at Central Library is part of the Manchester City Council ‘MCR Live 25‘ – a summer of music\, art\, markets\, and unforgettable vibes all summer long. SUMMARY:Morning Music Performances
DESCRIPTION:We will be joined by two very different local artists for some short musical performances. One is a young acoustic guitar student working toward grade exams\, who will give her first live performance ever. The other is an experienced composer of experimental rock/pop music\, an enthusiastic live performer and a library regular: \nSteve Manning aka Jupiter Canal System\, or JCS for short\, is a songwriter who lives in the heart of Cheshire. His craft is heavily influenced by his love of the New Wave era of the late 70s and early 80s\, often paying homage to the aggression of The Jam\, the controversy of The Stranglers and the wit of XTC. Despite trying to sonically replicate the genre\, Steve does try and remain original with his song writing\, especially lyrically and melodically. He is currently working on his 5th album and today he will be singing along to backing tracks which he has recorded and produced himself. \nFree – please drop in

SUMMARY:Paper Piano Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Paper Piano – A Retrospective \nFor the last 10 years\, Paper Piano have been creating music related artwork and packaging. More recently they have focused on hand-made books; this combination of music and books makes them the ideal label to exhibit at The Henry Watson Music Library. \nPaper Piano have worked with many illustrious musicians and bands. Included in the exhibition will be releases that have featured local talent including Mark Hoyle\, SPIRIT:level\, and Gideon Conn. Near neighbours The Declining Winter also make an appearance as do Motohiro Nakashima and Birds Humming the Beat\, both from Japan. \nThe exhibition will be split into two halves. The first half will focus on Paper Piano music and books\, but will also reference one-off works such as “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists” collage\, currently displayed at the Working Class Movement Library\, Salford. Highlights include SPIRIT:level’s concrete plinth and The Oreoh!s Pompom EP\, two CD’s wrapped up in wool that can’t be played until a pompom is made. The second half is dedicated to the multidisciplinary artist\, DJ Goalpost. His work is even more varied and playful and almost impossible to categorize. Things to look out for here include a CD hand sewn into the shorts from a Stockport County football kit and “Don’t Give Up On Us” by David Soulpost\, DJ Goalpost’s alter-ego. \nThroughout the time the exhibition is taking place there will be a series of events featuring Paper Piano artists and also the opportunity to buy some limited edition artworks. \nFree – drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online
