DESCRIPTION:Venture Arts Presents Full Studio Show – Completely A Hustling Place – With Work From 70 Artists \nThis autumn\, one of Manchester’s leading visual art studios\, Venture Arts\, which supports learning disabled and neurodivergent artists to play an active role in the cultural sector\, is presenting a thrilling full studio show where you can experience new work from 70 artists. A truly multimedia show\, Completely A Hustling Place includes photography\, ceramics\, dreamy audio\, textiles\, real genies\, illustration\, the best TV channel ever\, superheroes\, projection mapping and much more\, offering an exciting and immersive showcase of creativity and studio output over the past year. \nA massive celebration of creative triumph through times of adversity\, Completely A Hustling Place takes its name from a description of the vibrant and buzzing city of Manchester aptly described by artist\, Justin Lees. Scenes of our city\, as seen through the eyes of artist Terry Williams\, whose haunting pictures taken on disposable cameras during lockdown are one of many highlights of the show. You will also encounter black superheroes brought to life by Leslie Thompson\, bright cartoon characters from Jenny Franklin and embroidered bananas by Louise Hewitt\, a radical new TV station presented in the video work of Michael Greave\, a school desk installation by Caryn Egerton\, glorious sunset pictures by Becky Hislop and projections by Amy Ellison. You can experience a unique\, projection mapping collaboration by Malik Jama\, Raven Keating and Fred Collins\, screenings of film and animated work\, an interactive sound and ceramic installation by Adam Crichton and Anthony Whitfield and embroidery cluster collaboration including work by Christine Blackburn. \nThere will be art to take away from the show\, available on a first-come\, first-served basis including zines\, books and superhero images\, plus most of the work presented will also be for sale. \nVenture Arts Director\, Amanda Sutton\, comments: “We are incredibly excited to be able to present physical exhibitions again and to bring the work of our artists out of their homes and out of our studio\, into such a prominent and important building in the heart of our city. DESCRIPTION:Spotlighting the impact of the genre on the region’s community with a free exhibition of Hip Hop memorabilia and materials from the 1980s to present day\, marking over 40 years of Hip Hop lifestyle and culture in the city. \nMade up of clothing\, photographs\, cassettes\, records\, graffiti sketchbooks\, posters\, flyers and oral histories documenting the historical journey and growth of the youth movement\, the exhibition digs deep into sub genres and time-lining the scene changes\, weaving the rich tapestry of Manchester’s underground story the project tells a story; of a disillusioned yet resolute youth that strived for something beyond the grey skies and gloom of post-industrial decline and the economic depression of the early 1980’s. \nThe unique collection is quickly growing to showcase Manchester’s position in the history of UK Hip Hop – from the early days of pioneer breakdance crew’s\, Broken Glass & Street Machine\, dancing to the sounds of electro funk and breaks from the boom boxes or import record store\, ‘Spin Inn’ Top 10’ weekly feature on Stu Allen’s seminal Hip Hop radio show on Piccadilly 261. From inception and til this day\, Manchester’s home-grown talent and its new wave of shining stars remain at the forefront of UK Rap. I see the silent in the world. It is a coincidence that most of my pictures have very few or no people in them as we are just coming out of a world wide lockdown. None of the exhibited pictures were taken during this time. In fact\, I didn’t take a single picture. I did as advised and stayed at home. \nI have predominantly photographed places that go unnoticed. Places and areas that are walked past without a second thought. Often until that particular vista is gone or changed forever. I find myself photographing these views as they are quiet and suit my slow method of photography. I like working without hurry. SUMMARY:Shirley Baker: Airport '87
DESCRIPTION:A poignant look back at at Manchester Airport as seen through the lens of acclaimed photographer Shirley Baker\, thirty years ago\, having spent a day at the airport in 1987 capturing the experiences of passengers using the airport. The exhibition includes photos chosen by the public and Manchester Airport staff.  As well as capturing various areas of the airport\, Baker’s photographs also show how people passed the time before a flight by playing cards and board games – a far cry from smart phones\, tablets and kindles!  The style of passengers is also brought into focus with big hair and plenty of shell suits on show. \nBorn in Salford\, Baker was famed for her street photography of working class inner-city areas. The photos of Manchester Airport were discovered in the archives at Central Library. They explore work created after Shirley Baker was approached by the Documentary Photography Archive (DPA)\, who were seeking to commission photographers to grow their collection of contemporary work. \nIt marks three decades since the photos were taken and visitors will also get to see what the next 30 years at Manchester Airport will look like.The airport’s famous chandeliers that used to hang in Terminal 1 also make an appearance\, along with people smoking indoors and purchasing Cinzano in duty free! \nThe exhibition comes as the airport is embarking on its £1bn investment programme that will transform the passenger experience.  As part of the exhibition a number of old photos have been blended with CGIs of how the new terminal building will look in its place.  Visitors will also be able to find out more about the developments that will see Terminal 2 more than double in size. \nAll the images are held by the Archives+ Centre at Central Library and the full commission can be viewed at www.flickr.com/gp/manchesterarchiveplus/n964Z4 \nThis exhibition is kindly supported by Manchester Airport

SUMMARY:Deities at the Bottom of the Garden
DESCRIPTION:In this fascinating exhibition\, artist Richard Bartle explores in minute detail the customs and icons of major world religions and belief systems. Manifested in a series of 12 scale modelled garden sheds\, the work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches and temples into more private spaces of worship. Viewers are invited to make their own minds up about the question of what it is to have faith\, and the differences and similarities between differing belief systems. \nEach sculpture has been extensively researched by Richard through visiting places of worship and talking to people from the communities that use them\, as well as researching religious\, documentary and historical texts. Each shed and its interior has been painstakingly hand crafted\, wherever possible staying true to materials and respecting the sacred and ideological value of the objects and images appropriate to that belief. The work explores the ideas of dedication and obsession\, a global perspective of religion and politics\, and our relationship with physical objects and architecture. \nRichard Bartle is a Sheffield based artist who has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. He has many works in both private and public collections.
