SUMMARY:Architecture for the People - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Architecture for the People \nManchester City Architect’s Department\, 1902-2003 \nFor 101 years\, the City Architect’s Department in the Town Hall served the citizens and met diverse civic needs by designing hundreds of different municipal buildings. They ranged from grand airport terminals to the small public lavatories\, from the high profile like the new Free Trade Hall to the hidden away but essential facilities like mortuaries. \nFor the first time\, this exhibition presents a selection of the works delivered under the direction of the seven official City Architects spanning across the twentieth century. In the early days of the Department\, Manchester Corporation controlled gas and electricity undertakings\, most public transport\, schools\, police\, fire and ambulance services\, waste collection\, parks and recreation\, housing\, libraries\, crematoriums and more. Such responsibilities meant a need for new buildings and the upkeep of existing facilities. The City Architect’s Department designed and delivered these\, changing the face of the city and its suburbs\, providing thousands of new homes\, and scores of schools\, libraries\, public baths\, amongst a host of civic buildings. Using archival photographs\, drawings and ephemera\, the exhibition traces the Department and its buildings\, showing how architectural commissions mirrored the constitution of the Corporation and the changing fortunes of the city. \nCurated by Martin Dodge (University of Manchester) and Richard Brook (Lancaster University) \nFree – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:Our Town Hall – Portraits of a Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Our latest first-floor exhibition comes courtesy of the team currently working on the Our Town Hall Project to repair\, renovate and refurbish Manchester’s iconic Town Hall. \nExtraordinarily little is known about the artisans who built the Town Hall between 1868 and 1877\, and certainly no photographs exist. \nBut fast-forward 150 years and today’s skilled workers are no strangers to the lens of Manchester City Council photographer Barrie Leach. As well as physical progress\, Barrie’s been capturing portraits of those working on the Town Hall since the beginning of the project to repair\, restore and refurbish this much-loved building. \nAs well as modern construction workers and behind-the-scenes staff\, there are some incredible heritage trades involved. Stonemasonry\, mosaic making\, stained glass repair and manufacture\, horology: these are all crafts that would have been widespread in the 1870s but are now very much specialist – and rare – trades.  They are\, however\, critical to our restoration project. \nAlongside the words of the workers themselves\, 30 large portraits and 60 contextual images show the pride this modern team has discovered in being able to lovingly restore\, and give new life to\, the work of the forgotten workforce who went before them. \nFree – just drop in. Please make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:Curry Mile – A Changing Neighbourhood
DESCRIPTION:A documentary photography project spanning 7 years (2016-2023). Photographers Michael Baker & Phil Portus explore ‘present day’ Wilmslow Road\, Rusholme\, and challenge perceptions of what ‘Curry Mile’ now represents\, as opposed to nostalgia & past recollections. The ethnic make-up of Rusholme has changed significantly over recent years. Barber shops\, shisha bars & dessert parlours have sprung up\, the traditional restaurants are less dominant\, Manchester City FC have relocated\, and the pubs have all closed. The result poses the question as to whether the term ‘Curry Mile’ is now a misnomer. \nTo accompany this exhibition\, we are hosting a talk with the photographers on Thursday 20 July at 6pm\, which can be booked on eventbrite \nFree exhibition – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:The Streets of Our City: Manchester Town Hall Photographers' Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Town Hall Photographers’ Collection is a large photographic collection held in Archives+ Central Library\, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007. The collection consists of tens of thousands of images\, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly\, Manchester City Council. The photographs were taken by staff photographers\, who were tasked to document the work of the Corporation/Council departments and in doing so\, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history\, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape. The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives\, to slides\, prints\, CDs and even a couple of cine films. What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people. A team of dedicated staff\, volunteers and students from Bridge College\, Loreto College\, Manchester College and Pure Innovations are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection. This exhibition represents the result of their work to date. \nDo you recognise any of the streets or buildings? Would you like to share a memory you have of visiting somewhere in one of the images? We have limited information about these images and welcome your input to complete the information about each image.  When visiting the exhibition\, please use the book displayed at the beginning of the exhibition to record your memories and knowledge. \nWe are building a new images website. Could you take five minutes to tell us what our local image collection means to you and what features would you like to see on the new site? https://smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ERELJ7/ \nThis exhibition is free\, but please consider making a donation to support our Library Live programme if you can\, either online or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:Manchester Hip Hop Archive Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Spotlighting the impact of the genre on the region’s community with a free exhibition of Hip Hop memorabilia and materials from the 1980s to present day\, marking over 40 years of Hip Hop lifestyle and culture in the city. \nMade up of clothing\, photographs\, cassettes\, records\, graffiti sketchbooks\, posters\, flyers and oral histories documenting the historical journey and growth of the youth movement\, the exhibition digs deep into sub genres and time-lining the scene changes\, weaving the rich tapestry of Manchester’s underground story the project tells a story; of a disillusioned yet resolute youth that strived for something beyond the grey skies and gloom of post-industrial decline and the economic depression of the early 1980’s. \nThe unique collection is quickly growing to showcase Manchester’s position in the history of UK Hip Hop – from the early days of pioneer breakdance crew’s\, Broken Glass & Street Machine\, dancing to the sounds of electro funk and breaks from the boom boxes or import record store\, ‘Spin Inn’ Top 10’ weekly feature on Stu Allen’s seminal Hip Hop radio show on Piccadilly 261. From inception and til this day\, Manchester’s home-grown talent and its new wave of shining stars remain at the forefront of UK Rap. Artists such as Aitch\, Bugzy Malone and Children of Zeus are firmly carrying the torch that was once lit by the youth of the 80s in parks and city clubs such as\, Legends and The Bistro. This exhibition showcases the journey and gives an insight into the 5 elements of Hip Hop culture and the impact it’s had on Manchester and today’s society. \nFree – please drop in

SUMMARY:In Praise of Blandness
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of works by Manchester based photographer\, Robert John Watson. \nHere’s what Robert says about the exhbition: \n‘In Praise Of Blandness is in no way mundane. I see the silent in the world. It is a coincidence that most of my pictures have very few or no people in them as we are just coming out of a world wide lockdown. None of the exhibited pictures were taken during this time. In fact\, I didn’t take a single picture. I did as advised and stayed at home. \nI have predominantly photographed places that go unnoticed. Places and areas that are walked past without a second thought. Often until that particular vista is gone or changed forever. I find myself photographing these views as they are quiet and suit my slow method of photography. I like working without hurry. Shooting with Large Format film demands patience. \nIn Praise Of Blandness invites the viewer to appreciate the aesthetic of the ordinary and the everyday.’ \nFree – please drop in

SUMMARY:You Brought Your Own Light
DESCRIPTION:A powerful exhibition by Manchester based photographer\, Allie Crewe\, whose work is “highly rated\, sincere\, poignant and classical “\, Magnum Photography. There is nothing linear about femininity – or what it means to be a woman – in the 21st century. Sex and gender are not limited to the monolithic paradigm of genetics; they are informed by something intangible\, and it this essence of the female paradox that makes Allie Crewe’s work as relevant as it is important.

SUMMARY:Shirley Baker: Airport '87
DESCRIPTION:A poignant look back at at Manchester Airport as seen through the lens of acclaimed photographer Shirley Baker\, thirty years ago\, having spent a day at the airport in 1987 capturing the experiences of passengers using the airport. The exhibition includes photos chosen by the public and Manchester Airport staff.  As well as capturing various areas of the airport\, Baker’s photographs also show how people passed the time before a flight by playing cards and board games – a far cry from smart phones\, tablets and kindles!  The style of passengers is also brought into focus with big hair and plenty of shell suits on show. \nBorn in Salford\, Baker was famed for her street photography of working class inner-city areas. The photos of Manchester Airport were discovered in the archives at Central Library. They explore work created after Shirley Baker was approached by the Documentary Photography Archive (DPA)\, who were seeking to commission photographers to grow their collection of contemporary work. \nIt marks three decades since the photos were taken and visitors will also get to see what the next 30 years at Manchester Airport will look like. The airport’s famous chandeliers that used to hang in Terminal 1 also make an appearance\, along with people smoking indoors and purchasing Cinzano in duty free! \nThe exhibition comes as the airport is embarking on its £1bn investment programme that will transform the passenger experience.  As part of the exhibition a number of old photos have been blended with CGIs of how the new terminal building will look in its place.  Visitors will also be able to find out more about the developments that will see Terminal 2 more than double in size. \nAll the images are held by the Archives+ Centre at Central Library and the full commission can be viewed at www.flickr.com/gp/manchesterarchiveplus/n964Z4 \nThis exhibition is kindly supported by Manchester Airport

SUMMARY:Deities at the Bottom of the Garden
DESCRIPTION:In this fascinating exhibition\, artist Richard Bartle explores in minute detail the customs and icons of major world religions and belief systems. Manifested in a series of 12 scale modelled garden sheds\, the work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches and temples into more private spaces of worship. Viewers are invited to make their own minds up about the question of what it is to have faith\, and the differences and similarities between differing belief systems. \nEach sculpture has been extensively researched by Richard through visiting places of worship and talking to people from the communities that use them\, as well as researching religious\, documentary and historical texts. Each shed and its interior has been painstakingly hand crafted\, wherever possible staying true to materials and respecting the sacred and ideological value of the objects and images appropriate to that belief. The work explores the ideas of dedication and obsession\, a global perspective of religion and politics\, and our relationship with physical objects and architecture. \nRichard Bartle is a Sheffield based artist who has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. He has many works in both private and public collections. He says about his work; ‘I have always sought to observe the fundamental driving forces behind society and its ideas of political\, economic and philosophical progress’. \nFree – please drop in
