SUMMARY:Art of Oesophageal Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Art of oesophageal cancer is a visual representation of one patient’s experience of going through treatment\, surgery and then coming to terms with a new normal. \nThe subject matter touches on wider public health issues and covers the pre-cancer condition Barrett’s oesophagus\, as well as the artist’s experience of chemotherapy\, surgery and post-operative period in a High Dependency Unit.  Although the images refer to oesophageal cancer\, several can relate to any cancer or life changing illness or experience. The more recent pieces\, including two short\, illustrated poems\, point to personal issues that require management despite an otherwise good level of health. \nManchester-born artist\, Ann Wood\, first started to draw to pass the time during long chemotherapy sessions. She is self-taught and like many\, enjoys using art to express feelings on scenarios and life in general. The images in this exhibition are mainly figurative art using the portable media of pencils and fine liners. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer and how it can be treated if caught in its early stages. The exhibition coincides with Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month in February and the artist will also be running a virtual exhibition on Instagram to mark this month. Throughout February an image will be posted every day and will be a combination of those from the live exhibition and some of her earlier work. \nA summary of the earlier cancer series is available as a free e-book downloadable from oesophagectomylife.co.uk/artbook \nInstagram @annorthernlass. \nFree – drop in – please consider making a donation if you can either online or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

Adrian Bradshaw\, an English photographer\, brings that sense of yearning into full focus in this exhibition presented by the Confucius Institute at The University of Manchester. Featuring a blend of candid and posed photographs which explore China in the 1980’s; from opulent fashion extravaganzas to sentimental family excursions\, Bradshaw captures the fleeting beauty and simplicity of everyday life. \nFree – drop in – please consider making a donation if you can either online or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:David Gaffney 'Out of the Dark' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:A young man has rented a flat at the top of a high rise block in Birmingham where he watches the same video over and over again\, an old British film noir called Out Of The Dark. This film holds some important information for him\, something which will help him deal with his recent tragic events.  But what is he looking for in this corny black and white B flick?  Who is the mysterious woman who is bedridden after falling down the stairs? And why does a strange neighbour want to buy up all the garages on the street? \n  \nOut Of The Dark is an unsettling story of grief\, obsession and duplicity told using a puzzle box of stories within stories that twist and turn at every opportunity. It is also about film noir itself and as the young man dissects the recurring motifs of his favourite film genre he reveals more about himself than he does about the movie.  The edges of the film and real life begin to blur. Is he being pulled into a similar whirlpool of deceit\, corruption and violence? \n  \nPraise for Out Of The Dark \n  \n‘A twisted and darkly funny neo-noir that somehow channels the restless spirits of both David Lynch and Shane Meadows while remaining intensely literary. In Out Of The Dark David Gaffney has produced a book with real propulsive energy\, one that produces surprises on nearly every page.’  Stephen May\, Costa prize shortlisted author of Life! Death! Prizes! \n  \n‘ Out Of The Dark is an ingenious\, idiosyncratic and unnerving noir\, in which Ballard meets Jim Thomson meets Mike Leigh in a high rise block next to a motorway in the Black Country. ‘ Luke Brown\, editor\, critic\, and author of novels My Biggest Lie and Theft. \n  \nAbout David \nDavid Gaffney was born and brought up in Cleator Moor\, west Cumbria and now lives in Manchester. He is the author of the novels Never Never (2008) and All The Places I’ve Ever Lived ( 2017) plus the flash fiction and short story collections Sawn-Off Tales (2006)\, Aromabingo (2007)\, The Half-Life of Songs (2010) and More Sawn-Off Tales (2013). He has written articles for The Guardian\, Sunday Times\, Financial Times and Prospect magazine\, and was a judge for the Bridport Prize. His graphic novel with Dan Berry\, The Three Rooms In Valerie’s Head\, was published in 2018 on Top Shelf\, and David and Dan’s latest graphic novel Rivers is out now\, also on Top Shelf. David’s new novel\, Out Of The Dark\, is out in January 2022. \nThe Guardian said: ‘One hundred and fifty words by Gaffney are more worthwhile than novels by a good many others.’ \n\n\n\nAlso at the event we are delighted to present Melissa Wan reading her story Art Decade\, from an exciting upcoming book from Confingo called Waiting For The Gift – an anthology of short stories influenced by David Bowie’s seminal seventies album\, Low. \n\n\n\nSee www.davidgaffney.org for more

SUMMARY:TO PARADISE - Hanya Yanagihara in conversation with Kamila Shamsie
DESCRIPTION:Hanya Yanagihara\, author of the million-copy bestseller A Little Life\, introduces her incredible new novel TO PARADISE. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to be welcoming Hanya Yanagihara\, author of the modern classic A Little Life\, to Manchester for one of just four UK dates celebrating the release of her phenomenal new book TO PARADISE – a bold\, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment\, about lovers\, family\, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. Hanya will be in conversation with Kamila Shamsie. \nAbout the book: \nIn an alternate version of 1893 America\, New York is part of the Free States\, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). The fragile young scion of a distinguished family resists betrothal to a worthy suitor\, drawn to a charming music teacher of no means. In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic\, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older\, wealthier partner\, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093\, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule\, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him – and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearances. \nThese three sections are joined in an enthralling and ingenious symphony\, as recurring notes and themes deepen and enrich one another: A townhouse in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village; illness\, and treatments that come at a terrible cost; wealth and squalor; the weak and the strong; race; the definition of family\, and of nationhood; the dangerous righteousness of the powerful\, and of revolutionaries; the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise\, and the gradual realization that it can’t exist. What unites not just the characters\, but these Americas\, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human: Fear. Love. Shame. Need. Loneliness. \nTo Paradise is a fin-de-siecle novel of marvellous literary effect\, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love – partners\, lovers\, children\, friends\, family and even our fellow citizens – and the pain that ensues when we cannot. \nThis event is being held at Manchester Central Library in partnership with the Centre for New Writing. \nDoors: 18.00\, event starts: 18.30 \nTickets are £10.00 or £25.00 including a copy of the book. TO PARADISE will also be available to purchase on the night and Hanya will be signing copies after the talk. If you would like a signed copy but cannot make the event\, please contact us on 0161 274 3331 or manchester@blackwell.co.uk and we can arrange this for you.

SUMMARY:Breaking the News Exhibition and Archive Handling Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The news has the power to make or break elections\, to change the course of history or to alter our perspective on the city and country we live in. We expect the news to speak truth to power\, but can it ever really be objective? Is your news the same as everyone else’s? How do you use the news to navigate the world around you? \nCentral Library will be hosting a series of pop-up handling sessions tied in with the new Breaking the News Exhibition at the British Library. The sessions will be looking at how major local\, regional and international events have been reported using the original newspapers and magazines from the time. Come and see how the major events of the last 200 years were reported. \nHow did local and national newspapers reflect the two World Wars and the struggle for Women’s Rights. \nHow did the Manchester Evening News report significant local events from the Munich Air Crash to the Manchester Blitz. \nHow does a newspaper’s own perspective (Socialist Worker\, Gay Times\, Private Eye affect the way it reports on the world). \nThe display runs from February 24th until August 21th 2022 and alongside the display panels we will be running regular weekly handling sessions. Dates for the handling sessions will be announced very soon. \nBreaking the News: The Launch Debate will be live streamed from Leeds Central Library this Thursday 24th February at 7pm. You can register for this FREE event here. \nThe major new Breaking the News Exhibition will be at the British Library from 22 April to 21 August 2022. \n#BreakingTheNews

SUMMARY:Feeding the Darkness
DESCRIPTION:‘Art Thou in Darkness? Mind it not for if thou dost\, it will fill thee more……’ – James Naylor (17th century Quaker) \n‘Feeding the Darkness’ is a 65-minute immersive performance piece which demonstrates the stark impact of state-sanctioned torture on victims\, perpetrators\, families and those who collude in the ‘process’. It uses verbatim monologues\, dramatic monologues based on true stories\, duologues\, poetry and testimonies. It portrays a wide range of experiences from those of the mother of Private Lynddie England (court-marshalled for her role in the abuse of Abu Ghraib detainees)\, to those of a Kurdish asylum seeker at an appeal tribunal. \n‘Feeding the Darkness’ iterates the Quaker position on torture and encourages us to examine how the UN Convention Against Torture (1965) Article 1 is clearly being abused by UK and world-wide governments. This production is brought to you by Journeymen Theatre in collaboration with Freedom from Torture Manchester supporters\, and commissioned by Q-CAT: Quaker Concern for the Abolition of Torture. \nFreedom from Torture is a national charity providing specialist therapy and support for torture survivors\, and campaigning for a world without torture. Survivors of torture are at the heart of our work. \nThe performance is not suitable for younger viewers due to the disturbing nature of the content. There will be a Q&A after performances \nFree – please drop in
