This ambitious new programme is in association with Arts Council England\, BFI\, awarding National Lottery funding and The Space. \nAfter a resoundingly successful debut last summer\, which saw hundreds of Manchester residents dive into virtual realities\, Manchester Libraries are delighted to confirm that the headsets will return for a series of FREE public drop-in sessions at Manchester Central Library (8-12 Sept)\, Longsight Library (14-16)\, Gorton Hub (17-19 Sept)\, Abraham Moss (23 Sept)\,  New Moston (23 Sept)\, The Avenue (24 Sept) and Newton Heath (27 Sept). The times of the sessions can be found below. \nAcross the three weeks\, visitors to these libraries will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an array of awe-inspiring virtual worlds featuring some familiar faces\, plus leap into some brand new experiences too. \nAmongst the thrilling programme of VR offerings\, the experiences on offer will include: \n\nHold the World with Sir David Attenbrough: Embark on a groundbreaking interactive VR tour of the Natural History Museum in London with the most iconic of guides. Sir David\, who was filmed by more than 100 cameras and digitally recreated as a lifelike SD hologram for the experience\, acts as a private guide\, imparting his expert knowledge on rare objects from †he museum’s collection\, including a blue whale\, a stegosaurus\, and more. Get hands-on with rare specimens from its world-famous collection\, and experience priceless artefacts coming back to life.\nWallace & Gromit in the Grand Getaway: Step into the shoes (and paws) of the legendary Aardman duo as they blast-off on a cracking new adventure that will take you from the familiar sights of West Wallaby Street to the strange surroundings of deep space. An interactive treat – all in glorious VR-O-Rama!\nThe Philharmonia Virtual Orchestra – The Lark Ascending: Experience a mesmerising 360-degree performance of Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece featuring Nicola Benedetti.\nMonoliths: Explore England’s northern landscape through the voices and spoken word of three women\, in this poignant XR experience by Pilot Theatre and One to One Development Trust.\n**New** Doorstep Duets – An absorbing VR180 capture of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures by immersive filmmakers Neon8.\nDigital Spaces : People in Places films – short films from the local communities.\n\nThe VR headset experiences arrive as part of Manchester Libraries recently announced participation in the new Libraries Digital Network\, a groundbreaking collaboration with eight other library services\, including: Bradford\, Cambridgeshire\, Coventry\, Leeds\, Newham\, Nottinghamshire\, Somerset\, and Sunderland. This innovative network is the first of its kind\, uniquely combining local relevance with national impact. Her new exhibition brings together a personal collection of black-and-white photographs\, stories and memories from behind the camera. \nThe work follows on from her book\, ‘Just a Girl from North Manchester’\, and explores a lifetime spent documenting musicians\, communities and everyday moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. \nDisplayed throughout the exhibition are nine original vintage library display cabinets that were especially designed for Manchester Central Library when the building first opened. They provide the perfect setting for a journey through Manchester’s musical and cultural history. DESCRIPTION:This September\, the acclaimed music journalist\, industry head\, and broadcaster Tony Fletcher will be discussing his brand new book ‘When Pop Went Punk 1980-84’ with a special in-conversation event at Central Library. \nBefore authoring eleven books\, including best selling biographies of Who drummer Keith Moon\, R.E.M. and the Smiths\, Tony Fletcher was a teenaged music magazine publisher in his native England. But\, with a degree of industry that sounds absolutely exhausting\, he also ran a record label\, interviewed rock stars\, led a band\, promoted concerts\, worked as an on-air TV interviewer — and still found time for romance. \nFletcher chronicled the early days of his life and career in his previous work\, ‘Boy About Town’ (2013) but had enough extraordinary experiences left over for this new colourful and engaging memoir: ‘When Pop Went Punk 1980-84’. \n1980–’84 was an explosive time in British rock\, as the disruptive energy of bands like the Clash and Sex Pistols gave way to more sophisticated and chart-friendly genres and bands. Fletcher was on the front lines\, running a record label with the Jam’s Paul Weller\, attending all the important concerts and meeting the top acts\, many of whom became MTV regulars: Madness\, Dexy’s Midnight Runners\, Wham!\, Echo & the Bunnymen\, Killing Joke\, Adam and the Ants\, the Smiths and more. Then there’s the time he interviewed Paul McCartney… \nTony’s new book ‘When Pop Went Punk 1980-84’ is a coming-of-age story\, the tale of a naïve young man in a cultural whirlwind who learns some hard lessons about business\, journalism\, love and sex – all the while trying to get his own band a record deal. \nOpening-up about the book and his whirlwind career in music\, Tony will be chatting to Louder Than War journalist Iain Key about his extraordinary life. SUMMARY:Our Town Hall Heritage Evening Lecture with Hankinson Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \n\n\n\n\nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 22 September – will focus on the decorative paintwork restorations that have been made inside the building\, with a presentation by Phyllis Smith of Hankinson Whittle. \nThe Hankinson’s Heritage team is made up of highly skilled decorators and artists\, who undertake projects of varying scales\, encompassing the restorative work that is so important to maintain structural integrity and historical features of older buildings. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the charity Women in Sport\, this photo exhibition celebrates everything women bring to coaching. \nStill in 2026\, women are still undervalued and underrepresented in sports coaching. Women in Sport’s research has found that 30% of female coaches report being bullied (twice as many as men) and are 18% less likely to say their opinions are heard and respected. Despite good intentions\, many approaches still focus on ‘fixing the women’\, encouraging resilience\, confidence or aspiration rather than improving the conditions that make it harder for women to enter and stay in coaching. The issue is not women’s capability; it is the system they work within. DESCRIPTION:A bilingual poetry reading and conversation exploring poetic craft\, creative vision\, and the nuances of poetry translation. \n\n\n\nThe Instituto Cervantes in Manchester invites you to the second session of its “Poetry Encounters” programme\, this time featuring a discussion between Argentinian poet Claudia Masin and author and academic Charlotte Shevchenko Knight. \nPoetry Encounters was created with the aim of promoting the translation of poetry from Spanish into English through a collaborative project involving translation students from the University of Liverpool. \nThe event will include readings of Claudia’s poems as she has written them in Spanish\, as well as their English translations\, followed by an exploration not only into the creative substance of the poem (motifs\, imagery\, structure…)\, but also the process of translating it from one language to another. The discussion will also discuss Claudia’s literary trajectory as a poet and the context in which her writing places itself. DESCRIPTION:The ReUnion is a powerful live performance celebrating the Cultural Heritage\, Music and Memories of the cast consisting of women of African/Caribbean descent who are honoured to be ‘Embracing Their Next Chapter’ and incorporating their lived experiences. \nIt explores identity\, belonging\, resilience and joy all whilst acknowledging the realities of racism in everyday life and all with a reflective and respectful approach. \nThe show is vibrant and presents a combination of both a Play and a Party – blending theatre with a social gathering and celebration. It includes\, dance\, audience interaction and opportunities to reminisce through the music of the time and era and culminating with post-show music to be enjoyed by all. \nDig out those; Bell Bottoms\, Mini\, Midi\, Maxi Skirt and Dresses\, Tank Tops\, Curly Perms\, Platform Shoes. With imagination engaged\, join the cast as they revisit the ‘Groovy’ club scene of Manchester and the excitement of ‘The Shrine’ in Lagos. \nThe ReUnion is the second show for the cast and follows on from the success of their first ever show Dominoes\, Dahlias + Oware which won two awards – Best Age Friendly Award together and Fantastic Family Award. Dominoes proved such a success that it was sought after resulting in performances at a variety of venues in Greater Manchester and further afield with a commission by The Story House\, Theatre\, Chester. \nWe are flattered and truly happy to be bringing the show home to Central Manchester in the beautiful\, prestigious venue – Central Library. \nTickets \nTickets are just ‘pay-what-you-like’. SUMMARY:Library Lunchtime Choir
DESCRIPTION:Fancy a sing on your lunch break? Or just a feel-good sing to boost your day? Then come along to our regular Library Lunchtime Choir session! \nThere is no pressure to be a virtuoso\, we’re just singing to feel better. The session will be 45 minutes of warm-ups and an arrangement of a well-known tune. You don’t need to be able to read music\, we will learn everything by ear using the lyrics. \nSessions are run by Sarah Adams (Choirs Manchester) and the ethos is all about setting a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy singing together as a group. \nCome along with a friend or on your own\, it’ll be a friendly\, laid back session! \n** Please note the earlier date for this session due to forthcoming works in the Henry Watson Music Library in late October.
