SUMMARY:Dream FM presents: 'What do you dream of?'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the in-person premiere of What do you dream of? — a special broadcast & sound work created with the people of Greater Manchester \nNight falls and metropolis mirrors the cosmos. Destinies connected by light and dust send signals\, alone\, to one another. The city glitters: On Air. \nIn August 2021\, artists Danielle Swindells and Brit Seaton asked the people of Greater Manchester what they dream of. Directed to the automated voicemail system of fictional radio station Dream FM\, members of the public picked up the phone and left their answers. \nThe sound work What do you dream of? brings together selected hotline musings of the vast metropolitan borough. Strange encounters during sleep\, visions of change for a better world and personal tales of love and loss are among a constellation of intimate responses to the question\, capturing an audio portrait of dreams spanning from simple and symbolic\, to poetic and surreal. \nWhat do you dream of? features an original score by Joshua Inyang and Joshua Tarelle\, Space Afrika\, which takes sonic cues from pre-digital airwaves\, the DIY spirit of pirate radio and musical auras of Greater Manchester’s past and present. \nJoin us on Thursday 18 November 5.30 – 8pm at Manchester Central Library for a special premiere of the broadcast \nDoors open: 5.30pm \nBroadcast begins: 6.00pm \nBroadcast duration: 1hr 30mins \nThis event is BSL Interpreted by Lizzie Wharton. \nSeating will be socially distanced and we politely encourage you to wear masks unless exempt. \nFree – booking required below – please cancel if you are unable to attend\n  \nAlso – Online Broadcast: \nWhat do you dream of? will also broadcast from www.dream-fm.com every night at 9.00pm from Thurs 18 Nov to Thurs 16 Dec 2021. \nInspired by the fading format of night-time radio talk shows\, Dream FM stages a conceptual transmission that draws on the experience of listening together while apart\, the unifying liveness of radio\, and the comfort it can bring in the lonely hours when the public\, as orator and audience\, speaks to itself. \nDream FM is tuned in to emotional connections between strangers across Greater Manchester. The sound work platforms local voices in an experimental piece of archived social history\, guided by imagination and the collective sharing of innermost thoughts. \nThis project is made possible with support from Manchester Independents. \nVisit: www.dream-fm.com \nInstagram: www.instagram.com/0161dreamfm \nTwitter: www.twitter.com/0161dreamfm \nEmail: 0161dreamfm@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Nail on the Head by Paul Cookson
DESCRIPTION:FLAPJACK PRESS PRESENTS: \nNail on the Head\nA COVID-19 Poetry Diary\, Vol. 4 \nWritten daily throughout the UK’s restrictions to combat coronavirus\, Nail on the Head takes us from the anniversary of the first lockdown\, through the easing of regulations\, and up to our grand reopening on so-called ‘Freedom Day’. \nHumorous\, compassionate\, and with a principled\, political edge (and more than a passing interest in the European Football Championships\, as you’d expect from the National Football Museum’s poet-in-residence)\, this is Paul’s fourth and concluding documentation of a nation’s resolve and wellbeing. \nIllustrated by Chris Riddell OBE (Children’s Laureate / Observer)\, Korky Paul (Winnie and Wilbur / Sir Scallywag) and Martin Chatterton (Winter of the White Bear / Bluenoses). \nCover by Martin Chatterton. \n“A fresh collection of Cookson’s verse. If it’s laughter you’re after you could do worse.” – Dr John Cooper Clarke\, poet \n“Pithy blinders\, heartfelt and moving\, marvellously inventive and original … quite brilliant. When looking at the national landscape\, its wounds and doughty perseverance generated by its grief besieged citizens\, Paul Cookson is their sparse voice\, their collective bewilderment and courage.” – Stewart Henderson\, poet \n“Paul Cookson is a special poet. He is a human being. Rare in this game.” – Mike Garry\, poet

SUMMARY:Art of Oesophageal Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Art of oesophageal cancer is a visual representation of one patient’s experience of going through treatment\, surgery and then coming to terms with a new normal. \nThe subject matter touches on wider public health issues and covers the pre-cancer condition Barrett’s oesophagus\, as well as the artist’s experience of chemotherapy\, surgery and post-operative period in a High Dependency Unit.  Although the images refer to oesophageal cancer\, several can relate to any cancer or life changing illness or experience. The more recent pieces\, including two short\, illustrated poems\, point to personal issues that require management despite an otherwise good level of health. \nManchester-born artist\, Ann Wood\, first started to draw to pass the time during long chemotherapy sessions. She is self-taught and like many\, enjoys using art to express feelings on scenarios and life in general. The images in this exhibition are mainly figurative art using the portable media of pencils and fine liners. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer and how it can be treated if caught in its early stages. The exhibition coincides with Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month in February and the artist will also be running a virtual exhibition on Instagram to mark this month. Throughout February an image will be posted every day and will be a combination of those from the live exhibition and some of her earlier work. \nA summary of the earlier cancer series is available as a free e-book downloadable from oesophagectomylife.co.uk/artbook \nInstagram @annorthernlass. \nFree – drop in – please consider making a donation if you can either online or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:The Door Opened: 1980s China

Adrian Bradshaw\, an English photographer\, brings that sense of yearning into full focus in this exhibition presented by the Confucius Institute at The University of Manchester. Featuring a blend of candid and posed photographs which explore China in the 1980’s; from opulent fashion extravaganzas to sentimental family excursions\, Bradshaw captures the fleeting beauty and simplicity of everyday life. \nFree – drop in – please consider making a donation if you can either online or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:David Gaffney 'Out of the Dark' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:A young man has rented a flat at the top of a high rise block in Birmingham where he watches the same video over and over again\, an old British film noir called Out Of The Dark. This film holds some important information for him\, something which will help him deal with his recent tragic events.  But what is he looking for in this corny black and white B flick?  Who is the mysterious woman who is bedridden after falling down the stairs? And why does a strange neighbour want to buy up all the garages on the street? \n  \nOut Of The Dark is an unsettling story of grief\, obsession and duplicity told using a puzzle box of stories within stories that twist and turn at every opportunity. It is also about film noir itself and as the young man dissects the recurring motifs of his favourite film genre he reveals more about himself than he does about the movie.  The edges of the film and real life begin to blur. Is he being pulled into a similar whirlpool of deceit\, corruption and violence? \n  \nPraise for Out Of The Dark \n  \n‘A twisted and darkly funny neo-noir that somehow channels the restless spirits of both David Lynch and Shane Meadows while remaining intensely literary. In Out Of The Dark David Gaffney has produced a book with real propulsive energy\, one that produces surprises on nearly every page.’  Stephen May\, Costa prize shortlisted author of Life! Death! Prizes! \n  \n‘ Out Of The Dark is an ingenious\, idiosyncratic and unnerving noir\, in which Ballard meets Jim Thomson meets Mike Leigh in a high rise block next to a motorway in the Black Country. ‘ Luke Brown\, editor\, critic\, and author of novels My Biggest Lie and Theft. \n  \nAbout David \nDavid Gaffney was born and brought up in Cleator Moor\, west Cumbria and now lives in Manchester. He is the author of the novels Never Never (2008) and All The Places I’ve Ever Lived ( 2017) plus the flash fiction and short story collections Sawn-Off Tales (2006)\, Aromabingo (2007)\, The Half-Life of Songs (2010) and More Sawn-Off Tales (2013). He has written articles for The Guardian\, Sunday Times\, Financial Times and Prospect magazine\, and was a judge for the Bridport Prize. His graphic novel with Dan Berry\, The Three Rooms In Valerie’s Head\, was published in 2018 on Top Shelf\, and David and Dan’s latest graphic novel Rivers is out now\, also on Top Shelf. David’s new novel\, Out Of The Dark\, is out in January 2022. \nThe Guardian said: ‘One hundred and fifty words by Gaffney are more worthwhile than novels by a good many others.’ \n\n\n\nAlso at the event we are delighted to present Melissa Wan reading her story Art Decade\, from an exciting upcoming book from Confingo called Waiting For The Gift – an anthology of short stories influenced by David Bowie’s seminal seventies album\, Low. \n\n\n\nSee www.davidgaffney.org for more

SUMMARY:TO PARADISE - Hanya Yanagihara in conversation with Kamila Shamsie
DESCRIPTION:Hanya Yanagihara\, author of the million-copy bestseller A Little Life\, introduces her incredible new novel TO PARADISE. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to be welcoming Hanya Yanagihara\, author of the modern classic A Little Life\, to Manchester for one of just four UK dates celebrating the release of her phenomenal new book TO PARADISE – a bold\, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment\, about lovers\, family\, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. Hanya will be in conversation with Kamila Shamsie. \nAbout the book: \nIn an alternate version of 1893 America\, New York is part of the Free States\, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). The fragile young scion of a distinguished family resists betrothal to a worthy suitor\, drawn to a charming music teacher of no means. In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic\, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older\, wealthier partner\, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093\, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule\, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him – and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearances. \nThese three sections are joined in an enthralling and ingenious symphony\, as recurring notes and themes deepen and enrich one another: A townhouse in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village; illness\, and treatments that come at a terrible cost; wealth and squalor; the weak and the strong; race; the definition of family\, and of nationhood; the dangerous righteousness of the powerful\, and of revolutionaries; the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise\, and the gradual realization that it can’t exist. What unites not just the characters\, but these Americas\, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human: Fear. Love. Shame. Need. Loneliness. \nTo Paradise is a fin-de-siecle novel of marvellous literary effect\, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love – partners\, lovers\, children\, friends\, family and even our fellow citizens – and the pain that ensues when we cannot. \nThis event is being held at Manchester Central Library in partnership with the Centre for New Writing. \nDoors: 18.00\, event starts: 18.30 \nTickets are £10.00 or £25.00 including a copy of the book. TO PARADISE will also be available to purchase on the night and Hanya will be signing copies after the talk. If you would like a signed copy but cannot make the event\, please contact us on 0161 274 3331 or manchester@blackwell.co.uk and we can arrange this for you.

SUMMARY:Breaking the News Exhibition and Archive Handling Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The news has the power to make or break elections\, to change the course of history or to alter our perspective on the city and country we live in. We expect the news to speak truth to power\, but can it ever really be objective? Is your news the same as everyone else’s? How do you use the news to navigate the world around you? \nCentral Library will be hosting a series of pop-up handling sessions tied in with the new Breaking the News Exhibition at the British Library. The sessions will be looking at how major local\, regional and international events have been reported using the original newspapers and magazines from the time. Come and see how the major events of the last 200 years were reported. \nHow did local and national newspapers reflect the two World Wars and the struggle for Women’s Rights. \nHow did the Manchester Evening News report significant local events from the Munich Air Crash to the Manchester Blitz. \nHow does a newspaper’s own perspective (Socialist Worker\, Gay Times\, Private Eye affect the way it reports on the world). \nThe display runs from February 24th until August 21th 2022 and alongside the display panels we will be running regular weekly handling sessions. Dates for the handling sessions will be announced very soon. \nBreaking the News: The Launch Debate will be live streamed from Leeds Central Library this Thursday 24th February at 7pm. You can register for this FREE event here. \nThe major new Breaking the News Exhibition will be at the British Library from 22 April to 21 August 2022. \n#BreakingTheNews

SUMMARY:Feeding the Darkness
DESCRIPTION:‘Art Thou in Darkness? Mind it not for if thou dost\, it will fill thee more……’ – James Naylor (17th century Quaker) \n‘Feeding the Darkness’ is a 65-minute immersive performance piece which demonstrates the stark impact of state-sanctioned torture on victims\, perpetrators\, families and those who collude in the ‘process’. It uses verbatim monologues\, dramatic monologues based on true stories\, duologues\, poetry and testimonies. It portrays a wide range of experiences from those of the mother of Private Lynddie England (court-marshalled for her role in the abuse of Abu Ghraib detainees)\, to those of a Kurdish asylum seeker at an appeal tribunal. \n‘Feeding the Darkness’ iterates the Quaker position on torture and encourages us to examine how the UN Convention Against Torture (1965) Article 1 is clearly being abused by UK and world-wide governments. This production is brought to you by Journeymen Theatre in collaboration with Freedom from Torture Manchester supporters\, and commissioned by Q-CAT: Quaker Concern for the Abolition of Torture. \nFreedom from Torture is a national charity providing specialist therapy and support for torture survivors\, and campaigning for a world without torture. Survivors of torture are at the heart of our work. \nThe performance is not suitable for younger viewers due to the disturbing nature of the content. There will be a Q&A after performances \nFree – please drop in

SUMMARY:Okechukwu Nzelu - HERE AGAIN NOW Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Manchester Central Library for the launch of Okechukwu Nzelu’s new book HERE AGAIN NOW.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWe’re delighted to be working with Blackwells Books to host the launch of Okechukwu Nzelu’s latest book HERE AGAIN NOW – a heart-breaking and immensely uplifting novel about lovers\, fathers and sons which shows the power of family – both the one into which we are born and those we choose for ourselves. Okechukwu will be in conversation with Andrew McMillan. \nAbout the book: \nAchike Okoro feels like his life is coming together at last. His top-floor flat in Peckham is as close to home as he can imagine and after years of hard work\, he’s about to get his break as an actor. He’s even persuaded his father\, Chibuike\, to move in with him\, grateful to offer the man who raised him as a single parent a home of his own. \nBetween filming trips\, Achike is snatching a few days in London with Ekene\, his best friend of twenty years\, the person who makes him feel whole. Achike can put the terrible things that happened behind him at last; everything is going to be alright. Maybe even better. \nBut after a magical night\, when Achike and Ekene come within a hair’s breadth of admitting their feelings for each other\, a devastating event rips all three men apart. The author of the Ben Bracken thrillers and the standalone post-Brexit country-noir Crook’s Hollow. \nRob writes full time\, as well as organising and attending various author events across the UK. Passionate about inspiring a love of the written word in young people\, he spends a lot of time in schools across the North West\, encouraging literacy\, storytelling and creative-writing. He is also a co-host of the For Your Reconsideration film podcast\, and a regular voice on the Blood Brothers crime book podcast. \nHere’s some more information about the authors appearing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCath Staincliffe\nCath was brought up in Bradford then moved to work as a community artist in Manchester where she now lives with her family. \nLooking for Trouble\, published in 1994\, launched private eye Sal\, a single parent struggling to juggle work and home\, onto Manchester’s mean streets. Cath has published a further seven Sal Kilkenny mysteries. \nCath is also a scriptwriter\, creator of ITV’s hit police drama\, Blue Murder\, she was also commissioned to write the Scott & Bailey books and writes for Danny Brocklehurst’s Stone detective drama. \nShe is now writing a series of stand-alone novels where ordinary families find themselves caught up in extraordinary events. Cath is a founder member of Murder Squad\, a virtual collective of northern crime writers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoseph Knox\nJoseph Knox was born and raised in and around Stoke-On-Trent and Manchester\, where he worked in bars and bookshops before moving to London. He runs\, writes and reads compulsively. \nSirens\, his debut novel\, was a Sunday Times bestseller\, and his work has now been translated into 18 languages. \nHis latest novel ‘True Crime Story’ was published in 2021. The Times described it as ‘Scandalously entertaining…Knox is a fantastic writer. His ambitious fourth novel satirises and celebrates the true-crime genre with glee … by turns horrific and hilarious’ – Mark Sanderson. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaren Woods\nKaren was born and raised in the City Of Manchester and is proud to be a Mancunian! Being raised within an inner city area inspired Karen to take an unorthodox and very well received approach within her writing. \nKaren left school without any formal qualifications and obtained her inspiration from attending an adult literacy course which was offered by her former employers. \nKaren writes from the heart and always keeps it real to life\, and she writes about subjects we can all relate too. Having lived a colourful life she uses her own experiences to write her books. Her fan base is growing every day and soon everyone will know the name Karen Woods. \nKaren believes that everyone has the power to to change their lives around with self belief and determination. “Life doesn’t give. We have to take what we can.” . \n \nMandasue Heller\nAfter moving to Manchester in the early 80’s\, Mandasue immersed herself in the underground music scene. Forced by illness to temporarily quit singing in the 90’s\, she turned her hand to writing\, using the notorious Hulme Crescents\, where she had spent her first 10 years in Manchester\, as the backdrop. \nHer first written piece concerned a real-life incident\, when a man had broken into her house in the early hours and attacked her with a claw-hammer\, fracturing her skull. But it was the psychological after-effects that affected her most deeply\, and she hoped that writing about it would exorcise the hold it still had over her. The finished piece was too personal for anybody else to read\, but she had enjoyed the process of writing\, so decided to try her hand at fiction instead – and her first book\, The Front\, was snapped up by Hodder & Stoughton. She has written 13 books since then\, and is currently working on the 14th. \nMother to 3 grown children\, and grandmother of 3\, Mandasue still lives in Manchester\, and spends her time between books and family commitments locked away in the studio\, writing and recording music albums. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlex Caan\nAlex Caan has spent over a decade working in Information Systems Security for a number of government organisations\, and is currently specialising in Terrorism Studies. A lifetime passion for writing was sparked by the encouraging words of an English Teacher in school\, and eventually led to Alex successfully completing an MA in Creative Writing\, and write Cut to the Bone. \nCut to the Bone has been a Kindle Number 1 bestseller\, was picked as a WH Smith ‘Everyone’s Talking About’ book of the week\, chosen as Sainsbury’s best of summer reads and was Angela Marson’s pick for crime novel recommendation of the year. Alex Caan was also a rising star on Amazon in 2016. \nFirst To Die\, the shocking sequel to Cut to the Bone\, was released June 14th 2018. \nHis latest novel The Unbroken is out now. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Simms\nChris Simms has worked in airports\, nightclubs\, post offices and telesales centres. Along with nominations for Crime Writers’ Association Daggers and the Theakston’s Crime Novel of the Year award for his novels and short stories\, Chris was selected by Waterstones as one of their ’25 Authors for the Future’. \nThe idea for his debut novel\, Outside the White Lines\, came to him in the early hours of the morning while broken down on the hard shoulder of the M40. \nHis series of DI Spicer novels – psychological thrillers set very firmly in Manchester – follow the police detective’s fortunes as he pursues mad\, bad and deadly individuals through the city’s ever-evolving landscape. \nIn October 2012\, Scratch Deeper was launched – a new series featuring Detective Constable Iona Khan of Manchester Police’s Counter Terrorism Unit. This was followed-up by another DC Khan novel\, A Price To Pay. \nDark Angel\, the 9th DI Spicer novel was published in January 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nS J Watson\nS J Watson’s first novel\, Before I Go To Sleep\, became a phenomenal international success and has now sold over 6\,000\,000 copies worldwide. It won the Crime Writers’ Association Award for Best Debut Novel and the Galaxy National Book Award for Crime Thriller of the Year and has been translated into more than 40 languages. \nThe film of the book\, starring Nicole Kidman\, Colin Firth and Mark Strong\, and directed by Rowan Joffe\, was released in September 2014.
