SUMMARY:The Manchester Pop Trail – Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up exhibition celebrating the city’s musical heritage through Paul Wilde’s original artwork and research. \nThe Manchester Pop Trail offers a visual record of the city’s musical evolution\, through the creative work of writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde. Spanning genres from the Blues to Punk and Britpop\, this exhibition traces the city’s popular music story – exploring not only the artists who became household names\, but also the forgotten rehearsal rooms\, dancehalls\, clubs\, and community spaces that shaped Manchester’s sound. Many of these stories stretch back as far as 1929\, forming a timeline of popular music that has never been fully mapped. \nThe Origins of the Project \nPaul’s father\, Geoff Wilde\, was a respected local musician who performed in several Manchester bands and famously shared the same bill as The Beatles at the Cavern Club in 1961. Shaped by the music that filled his home and the stories shared by his father\, this early connection to musical history became the spark for a lifelong fascination with the hidden rock ’n’ roll landmarks beneath our noses. \nPaul began meticulously researching and illustrating the historic venues\, people\, and cultural milestones of Greater Manchester that have received little formal documentation and are at risk of disappearing from public memory. Over the years\, Paul’s instinct to preserve what others overlooked grew into a personal mission. \nEngaging the Public with the Story \nThis mission took public form through The Manchester Pop Trail\, Paul’s long-running column in the Manchester Evening News. Week after week\, he researched\, wrote\, and illustrated the city’s musical evolution\, creating a visual record that blended journalism\, heritage\, and art. His hand-drawn illustrations – later developed into ceramic artworks – offered a tactile way to “hold” the city’s music story\, turning research into objects that preserve memory. \nPaul’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. His work has been recognised and supported by leading figures from Manchester’s music community\, including Peter Hook\, Graham Gouldman\, and Graham Nash. He was also presented with a certificate for “keeping the 60s music alive” by members of bands such as The Hollies\, Herman’s Hermits\, and The Dreamers – a testament to the cultural value of his research and the authenticity of his storytelling. \nThe exhibition grew out of a connection made through Time Travellers Tea Room\, Manchester Histories’ community coffee morning where people come together to share stories\, explore the city’s heritage and meet others with an interest in Manchester’s past. After writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde shared the Manchester Pop Trail with the group\, facilitated by Yussuf M’Rabty\, conversations continued and developed into this exhibition at Manchester Histories Hub. \nThis exhibition marks an opportunity to bring together historians\, musicians\, supporters\, and anyone who believes Manchester’s music story deserves a permanent home. SUMMARY:Schinkel in Manchester 1826-2026
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of architectural models by students from the Manchester School of Architecture of early nineteenth buildings in Berlin and Manchester created to celebrate the bicentenary of the brief visit of the Prussian court architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) to Manchester on July 17 1826. \nDuring his ‘English’ journey Schinkel was brought into direct contact with the industrial progress of Britain in many sites across the country. In Manchester\, and specifically in Ancoats\, he saw an industrial town developing at full spate. As Nikolaus Pevsner described it Schinkel ‘had never seen anything like that\, and indeed could not have seen it anywhere else’. \nThe exhibition compares six of Schinkel’s buildings in Berlin with six similar contemporary buildings in Manchester\, by the architects Charles Barry (1795 – 1860)\, Francis Goodwin (1784-1835) and the anonymous ‘mere foremen’ (as Schinkel described them) who were building the mills and warehouses that were in his view ‘nothing but monstrous masses of red brick … without any trace of architecture …’ \nThere will also be a special talk about this exhibition in the Performance Space on 30 September – see event details here \nFree – just drop in. \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

DESCRIPTION:This September\, prepare to explore new worlds with David Attenborough\, Wallace & Gromit\, Matthew Bourne\, Vaughan Williams and more at your local library. \nFor three weeks in September\, Manchester Libraries will be hosting state-of-the-art VR headsets and a feast of FREE digital experiences. \nManchester Libraries are one of nine library services in England to take part in Digital Spaces\, an innovative collaboration to enhance digital engagement and accessibility in libraries. This ambitious new programme is in association with Arts Council England\, BFI\, awarding National Lottery funding and The Space. \nAfter a resoundingly successful debut last summer\, which saw hundreds of Manchester residents dive into virtual realities\, Manchester Libraries are delighted to confirm that the headsets will return for a series of FREE public drop-in sessions at Manchester Central Library (8-12 Sept)\, Longsight Library (14-16)\, Gorton Hub (17-19 Sept)\, Abraham Moss (23 Sept)\,  New Moston (23 Sept)\, The Avenue (24 Sept) and Newton Heath (27 Sept). The times of the sessions can be found below. \nAcross the three weeks\, visitors to these libraries will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an array of awe-inspiring virtual worlds featuring some familiar faces\, plus leap into some brand new experiences too. \nAmongst the thrilling programme of VR offerings\, the experiences on offer will include: \n\nHold the World with Sir David Attenbrough: Embark on a groundbreaking interactive VR tour of the Natural History Museum in London with the most iconic of guides. Sir David\, who was filmed by more than 100 cameras and digitally recreated as a lifelike SD hologram for the experience\, acts as a private guide\, imparting his expert knowledge on rare objects from †he museum’s collection\, including a blue whale\, a stegosaurus\, and more. Get hands-on with rare specimens from its world-famous collection\, and experience priceless artefacts coming back to life.\nWallace & Gromit in the Grand Getaway: Step into the shoes (and paws) of the legendary Aardman duo as they blast-off on a cracking new adventure that will take you from the familiar sights of West Wallaby Street to the strange surroundings of deep space. An interactive treat – all in glorious VR-O-Rama!\nThe Philharmonia Virtual Orchestra – The Lark Ascending: Experience a mesmerising 360-degree performance of Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece featuring Nicola Benedetti.\nMonoliths: Explore England’s northern landscape through the voices and spoken word of three women\, in this poignant XR experience by Pilot Theatre and One to One Development Trust.\n**New** Doorstep Duets – An absorbing VR180 capture of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures by immersive filmmakers Neon8.\nDigital Spaces : People in Places films – short films from the local communities.\n\nThe VR headset experiences arrive as part of Manchester Libraries recently announced participation in the new Libraries Digital Network\, a groundbreaking collaboration with eight other library services\, including: Bradford\, Cambridgeshire\, Coventry\, Leeds\, Newham\, Nottinghamshire\, Somerset\, and Sunderland. This innovative network is the first of its kind\, uniquely combining local relevance with national impact. They provide the perfect setting for a journey through Manchester’s musical and cultural history. This ambitious new programme is in association with Arts Council England\, BFI\, awarding National Lottery funding and The Space. \nAfter a resoundingly successful debut last summer\, which saw hundreds of Manchester residents dive into virtual realities\, Manchester Libraries are delighted to confirm that the headsets will return for a series of FREE public drop-in sessions at Manchester Central Library (8-12 Sept)\, Longsight Library (14-16)\, Gorton Hub (17-19 Sept)\, Abraham Moss (23 Sept)\,  New Moston (23 Sept)\, The Avenue (24 Sept) and Newton Heath (27 Sept). DESCRIPTION:This September\, the acclaimed music journalist\, industry head\, and broadcaster Tony Fletcher will be discussing his brand new book ‘When Pop Went Punk 1980-84’ with a special in-conversation event at Central Library. \nBefore authoring eleven books\, including best selling biographies of Who drummer Keith Moon\, R.E.M. and the Smiths\, Tony Fletcher was a teenaged music magazine publisher in his native England. But\, with a degree of industry that sounds absolutely exhausting\, he also ran a record label\, interviewed rock stars\, led a band\, promoted concerts\, worked as an on-air TV interviewer — and still found time for romance. \nFletcher chronicled the early days of his life and career in his previous work\, ‘Boy About Town’ (2013) but had enough extraordinary experiences left over for this new colourful and engaging memoir: ‘When Pop Went Punk 1980-84’. \n1980–’84 was an explosive time in British rock\, as the disruptive energy of bands like the Clash and Sex Pistols gave way to more sophisticated and chart-friendly genres and bands. Fletcher was on the front lines\, running a record label with the Jam’s Paul Weller\, attending all the important concerts and meeting the top acts\, many of whom became MTV regulars: Madness\, Dexy’s Midnight Runners\, Wham!\, Echo & the Bunnymen\, Killing Joke\, Adam and the Ants\, the Smiths and more. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \n\n\n\n\nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 22 September – will focus on the decorative paintwork restorations that have been made inside the building\, with a presentation by Phyllis Smith of Hankinson Whittle. \nThe Hankinson’s Heritage team is made up of highly skilled decorators and artists\, who undertake projects of varying scales\, encompassing the restorative work that is so important to maintain structural integrity and historical features of older buildings. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the charity Women in Sport\, this photo exhibition celebrates everything women bring to coaching. \nStill in 2026\, women are still undervalued and underrepresented in sports coaching. Women in Sport’s research has found that 30% of female coaches report being bullied (twice as many as men) and are 18% less likely to say their opinions are heard and respected. Despite good intentions\, many approaches still focus on ‘fixing the women’\, encouraging resilience\, confidence or aspiration rather than improving the conditions that make it harder for women to enter and stay in coaching. The issue is not women’s capability; it is the system they work within. Come along as we sing and bring stories to life in English\, Spanish\, Polish and Italian. \nWhether you are looking to introduce your child to new sounds\, practice a second language\, or simply enjoy the magic of live storytelling\, this interactive session offers a fun\, welcoming space for listeners of all ages. \nTo mark the occasion\, our storytellers bring the beloved children’s book The Gruffalo to life in four languages\, celebrating the rich linguistic diversity of Europe! \nThe Gruffalo is a renowned children’s tale written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. It follows the story of a quick-witted mouse taking a stroll through the forest\, who fends off potential predators—a fox\, an owl\, and a snake—by inventing a terrifying imaginary creature called the Gruffalo\, only to be shocked to encounter the actual monster later on. \nThe storytelling will be followed by a multilingual singalong and a craft workshop led by Magaly Flores. In collaboration with Società Dante Alighieri\, Manchester City of Literature and Manchester Libraries. \nRecommended age: 3-7.
