DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the first Word Central Open Mic and Spoken Word Night of 2019! \nHosted by Tony Curry with special guest poet Rose Condo. \n \nJanuary’s special guest Rose Condo is a Canadian spoken word artist and educator currently residing in the North of England. A multiple slam champion\, she has been performing her work extensively at spoken word nights and festivals throughout the UK and Canada since 2013\, including performances for Amnesty International\, Apples & Snakes\, Hammer & Tongue and guest slots supporting Hollie McNish and Shane Koyczan. She has been the host and organiser of the monthly spoken word event Queenie’s Coffee House Night since 2015.\nRose has written and toured two spoken word shows\, The Geography Of Me and How To Starve An Artist – the latter voted runner-up for Best UK Spoken Word Show at the Saboteur Awards 2017.\nHer work is unapologetically feminist\, oftentimes wry\, occasionally raw\, but always honest and compassionate. \nWord Central’s host Tony Curry is a poet and playwright for stage and radio. His solo shows include Brit Boy\, Complicit Relations\, Moving and most recently The Odyssey\, which he performed at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. He has two collections of poetry published by Flapjack Press\, The Noble Savage [“A window into yesterday … historical and poetic. I love it!” – Mike Garry] and Tall Tales for Tall Men Who Fall Well Short [“This is our poetry\, these are our poems.” – Tony Walsh]. \nOpen mic spots for January will be available to book from 14th December via mail@flapjackpress.co.uk. \nN.B. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition from The Architecture School for Children (TASC)\, celebrating the Connected Cities project\, which focused on the heritage of transport and engineering in Manchester over the last 200 years\, exploring how these emerging technologies made Manchester a global city\, connecting cities worldwide. \nTASC  worked with 150 children from five Manchester Primary Schools. SUMMARY:Faustus: Cotton Famine Poems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of the poetry of the Lancashire Cotton Famine (1861-65)\, featuring an exclusive performance by the traditional folk band Faustus\, who have set several of the poems to music. The Lancashire Cotton Famine is a fascinating period in British history; largely caused by the Union blockade of Confederacy slave-grown cotton exports during the American Civil War\, it led to mass unemployment across Lancashire. Despite their hardship\, many labourers drew inspiration from their situation\, to pen moving and satirical poems.  This previously-neglected body of poems has recently been collected from local Victorian newspapers in the Lancashire and Manchester area\, through a major research project led by Dr Simon Rennie (University of Exeter). Faustus are a highly-respected ensemble\, made up of three of the leading lights of their generation: Benji Kirkpatrick (Seth Lakeman Band\, Bellowhead)\, Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy\, Whapweasel) and Paul Sartin (Bellowhead\, Belshazzar’s Feast).

SUMMARY:Finding the Poetry of the Cotton Famine: Workshop
DESCRIPTION:THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULLY BOOKED \nThis fascinating interactive workshop\, led by researchers on the AHRC-funded Poetry of the Lancashire Cotton Famine project\, will guide participants through the newly-established database of the poetry\, and provide context to this significant part of the region’s history. Cotton Famine poetry represents several hundred individual texts\, and it was written largely by ordinary Mancunians and Lancastrians\, and published in local newspapers. These poems reacted to the extreme poverty caused by the mass-closing of cotton mills in the region when the Union blockaded Confederacy cotton exports during the American Civil War (1861-65). The poetry\, in standard English and dialect\, is by turns moving\, angry\, and funny\, and ranges through themes such as slavery\, politics\, war\, homelessness\, poverty\, and charity. Come and find out what ordinary people thought about these global events\, and why there is a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the centre of Manchester!

While co-editing the short story anthology\, The Dark Blue Winter Overcoat & Other Stories from the North\, Icelandic writer Sjón realised that the regions have deep common routes that are consistently – and collectively – nurtured and fed. Come and hear Sjón and his co-editor Ted Hodgkinson discuss the commonalities used by writers creating both naturalist and magical tales. The author of four previous novels including Moonstone and The Whispering Muse\, Sjón will also read and discuss his latest work translated into English. A three-part novel – a love story\, a crime story\, a science-fiction story – CoDex 1962 is arguably Sjón’s masterpiece.
