When the One Direction of the time\, DuJour discovers this\, their manager\, Wyatt Frame\, under his evil\, corrupt boss\, Fiona\, has the plane they are flying in crashed and him looking for a new band to use for their evil schemes. Enter Josie\, Melody\, and Valerie\, from Josie and the Pussycats\, a small band who wants to make it to the big time. When they are discovered by Wyatt\, they give in and become big rock stars. DESCRIPTION:What’s it like to be sixteen years old now? In this exhibition\, leading contemporary photographers join forces to present multimedia project\, Sixteen\, exploring the dreams\, hopes and fears of sixteen-year olds across the UK. Photographer Craig Easton conceived this ambitious project following his engagement with sixteen-year olds at the time of the Scottish Referendum. It was the first\, and as yet only\, time that these young people were given the vote in the UK. DESCRIPTION:Michael Bristow\, BBC World Service’s Asia and Pacific editor will talk about his eight-year stay in Beijing and why he decided to write about the country’s modern history. To assist him he asked for the help of his language teacher\, who was born just two years after the communist party came to power in 1949. The changing fortunes of his life have mirrored the ups and downs of his country\, which has moved from communist poverty to capitalist wealth in just a single generation. It came as a surprise though\, to learn that the teacher was also a cross-dresser. Michael gradually realised that the teacher’s story is the story of modern China. \nThe talk is free to attend and everyone is welcome!

DESCRIPTION:A bold\, experimental and genre-spanning evening of new music created as part of a unique cross-European collaboration. \nThis free one-off performance will showcase new music and visuals by Laura Campbell (UK) and Mari Sainio (Finland) who have been mentored by multi-instrumentalist and producer LoneLady. \nThe event will begin with an in-conversation with the three artists where they’ll discuss their creative processes\, the inspiration behind their new work and why international collaboration is more important than ever. \nCampbell and Sainio were chosen by a panel of Brighter Sound and Manchester City Council’s Library staff following a public call-out across the UK and Europe in December 2018. \nA Liverpool-based writer and musician\, Laura Campbell creates sound and music compositions for installation and film\, and was part of 90’s electronic band Mulu. \nA native of Helsinki\, composer and producer Mari Sainio combines classical music elements with cinematic melodies and electronic soundscapes and has previously worked with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and Imogen Heap. \nThis is the first in a series of international commissions as part of Both Sides Now – a groundbreaking initiative to support gender equality in music.
