SUMMARY:Marketing the Manchester Ship Canal 1919-1939
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibition showcases a range of original publicity material and print adverts created as marketing for the Port of Manchester. This saw a revolution in publicity with modern ideas on typefaces\, much more dynamic imagery and bolder use of colour. Manchester Ship Canal Company started using imaginative visual design to sell itself more effectively internationally and encourage industrial growth around the docks. \nThe exhibition highlights the work of a fascinating array of commercial artists engaged by the Ship Canal Company. Some of the most innovative in their design work were born locally and trained at the Manchester School of Art. Highlights include the ‘ship prow’ painting created by Paxton Chadwick\, the futurist designs and humorous sketches of Bert Wilson and the quirky illustrations of John Dronsfield. It also considers the influence of the company’s publicity chief Kenneth Brady who brought new ideas in design and messaging following his appointment to MSCC in 1926. Much of material exhibited was discovered 2021 in the extensive archives Ship Canal Company held in Manchester Central Library. It includes original artwork for some of the widely used designs that have never been displayed publicly before. \nExhibition curated by Martin Dodge (Senior Lecturer in the Geography Department\, University of Manchester). Much of his research is currently focused on the historical geography of Manchester’s transport and town planning. He is fascinated by the history of the Manchester Ship Canal and understanding how it transformed the city and the wider region. \nSupported by Archives+ at Central Library\, The University of Manchester and the Manchester Geographical Society. \nFree – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:When the Dust Settles - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:There are currently thousands of refugees in the UK waiting for decisions on their family reunion applications. Forced migration and the traumatic consequences of separation\, as well as of the obstacles to the reunification process\, are well documented\, as are the most immediate needs of families\, once reunited. The longer-term lived experience of reunited refugee families\, in contrast\, is poorly understood\, despite recognition that family reunion is not the end of a journey\, but the beginning of another long road for families to be able to settle and build their lives in the UK\, free from persecution. \nWhen the Dust Settles is a participatory\, mixed media research project that addresses this research gap\, by examining the ongoing challenges reunited refugee families face after their first year together in their new home. Created by Dr Maria Abranches (School of International Development\, UEA) and Amy Lythgoe (Together Now)\, and supported by a British Academy Innovation Fellowship. \nFree – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:Naomi Alderman in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The future is coming. The Future is here. \nWhen Martha Einkorn fled her father’s isolated compound in Oregon\, she never expected to find herself working for a powerful social media mogul hell-bent on controlling everything. Across the world\, in a mall in Singapore\, Lai Zhen\, an internet-famous survivalist\, flees from an assassin. Martha and Zhen’s worlds are about to collide while a few billionaires assured of their own safety lead the world to destruction. Martha’s relentless drive and Zhen’s insatiable curiosity could lead to something beautiful or the cataclysmic end of civilization. The Future unfolds at a breakneck speed\, highlighting how power corrupts the few who have it and what it means to stand up to them. \nNaomi Alderman joins to discuss her superb new novel The Future\, creating strong feminist characters on the page and screen\, and her superpowers as a novelist and game writer. Naomi is the author of several novels including The Power\, winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2017 which was adapted into an Amazon Prime series\, and Disobedience\, adapted into a film starring Rachel Weisz. Presented by Manchester Literature Festival in partnership with the Centre for New Writing and Creative Manchester. \nImage credit: Annabel Moeller

SUMMARY:Book Launch: PITY by Andrew McMillan
DESCRIPTION:Blackwell’s Bookshop and Manchester Libraries are excited to host the Manchester launch of award-winning poet Andrew McMillan’s PITY – his stunning debut novel which explores community\, masculinity and post-industrialisation in Northern England. \nDoors: 6.00\, starts: 6.30 \nTickets are £5.00 or free when ordering a copy of the book. PITY will also be available to purchase on the night and Andrew will be signing copies after the talk. If you would like a signed copy but cannot make the event\, please contact us on 0161 274 3331 or manchester@blackwell.co.uk and we can arrange this for you. \n \nAbout the book: \nThe town was once a hub of industry. A place where men toiled underground in darkness\, picking and shovelling in the dust and the sleck. It was dangerous and back-breaking work but it meant something. Once\, the town provided\, it was important\, it had purpose. But what is it now? \nBrothers Alex and Brian have spent their whole life in the town where their father lived and his father\, too. Still reeling from the collapse of his personal life\, Alex\, is now in his middle age\, and must reckon with a part of his identity he has long tried to mask. Simon is the only child of Alex and had practically no memory of the mines. Now in his twenties and working in a call centre\, he derives passion from his side hustle in sex work and his weekly drag gigs. \nSet across three generations of South Yorkshire mining family\, Andrew McMillan’s short and magnificent debut novel is a lament for a lost way of a life as well as a celebration of resilience and the possibility for change. \nAbout the author: \nAndrew McMillan was born in Barnsley in 1988. His debut collection of poetry\, physical\, was ‘the sort of once-in-a-generation debut that causes everyone to sit up and take notice’ according to Sarah Crown. physical was the only poetry book to ever win the Guardian First Book Award; it was also awarded a Somerset Maugham award\, an Eric Gregory Award\, the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize and in 2019 was voted as one of the Top 25 Poetry Books of the Past 25 Years by the Booksellers Association. His second collection\, playtime\, won the inaugural Polari Prize. A third collection\, pandemonium\, was published in 2021 and in 2022 he co-edited the acclaimed anthology 100 Queer Poems\, which was shortlisted in the British Book Awards. He is professor of contemporary writing at Manchester Metropolitan University and a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

SUMMARY:Creative Café – Heritage and Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:The importance of creative health is receiving critical and political attention\, particularly locally\, with Greater Manchester committed to becoming the first creative health city region [gmintegratedcare.org.uk]. \nResearch demonstrates the social and economic value of using creativity\, arts\, and heritage to enrich people’s lives. Whilst the recording and quantifying of these benefits is relatively recent\, practitioners in the arts and heritage have implicitly understood the wider benefits to society of their work for many years. \nAt this Creative Café\, we will hear a series of short ‘lightning talks’ from practitioners and researchers. Librarians and archivists from Manchester’s Archives+ partnership\, who have directly and indirectly contributed to projects enhancing well-being will be sharing their experiences. \nUniversity of Manchester researcher Dr Erin Beeston\, who is creating a heritage and wellbeing toolkit for older people for use in community and care settings for Manchester Histories\, and Dr Angela Whitecross\, who has worked on community oral history projects including ‘NHS at 70’ and ‘Voices of Covid’ will discuss their projects. \nWe also hear perspectives from Manchester Histories CEO\, Karen Shannon\, who is developing a heritage and well-being focus for the charity in Manchester Histories Hub. Julie McCarthy\, the region’s strategic lead for creative health\, will explain the policy context and current work embedding creative health into public health in Greater Manchester. \nThere will be a discussion across the panel with the audience exploring these projects further\, as well as a chance to explore pilot wellbeing activities with Manchester Histories and the Archives+ partners. The Creative Café format includes an informal lunch and networking opportunities. \nAll are welcome to this event\, it may be of special interest to researchers in creative health\, those working in heritage\, the arts\, health\, or social care\, as well as members of the public. \nDr Erin Beeston’s research work has been made possible through funding from The Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF)\, which supports knowledge exchange between higher education providers and external partners to benefit society\, Manchester City Council\, and Manchester Histories. \nRegister: \nThis event is free and open to anyone. As catering is provided we ask you to ensure you can come before registering. If your plans change and you are no longer able to attend\, we ask that you update your registration status. \nFree – booking required
