SUMMARY:Cultural Masterplanning - How Manchester changed the way we make cities
DESCRIPTION:A major new exhibition at Manchester Central Library explores the process of Cultural Masterplanning and how creative interventions in urban spaces undergoing redevelopment can reconnect fragmented places with their past and allow us to look to a dynamic shared future. These playful interactions change how transformation feels and help us involved and  that change is happening with us\, not to us. \nShowcased across the Exhibition Hall and Wolfson Reading Room at Central Library from April to September 2026 are glimpses of buried histories of lives and industry which sparked curiosity and conversation about places in transition such as Ancoats\, Central Library itself and Mayfield Depot\, as well as examples from Glasgow and London. \nCitizen Manchester takes a deep dive into the extraordinary transformation of Central Library and Town Hall Extension\, Manchester’s historic twin treasures whose restoration began in 2014 and continues to lead the city’s rebirth as a global icon blending heritage and innovation. Citizen Manchester records and celebrates the creation of the first ever Modern City. From April to August 2026 Central Library’s Exhibition Hall and First Floor corridors of Central Library will feature photographs and artefacts from the transformation\, allowing viewers a close-up look at the rich patina and textures captured within the walls of these beloved spaces. \nThe Lost World of Mayfield has returned to the First Floor Reading Room of Central Library\, showcasing archival treasures from Mayfield\, the area now transformed by a thriving green space including a brand-new public park and the transformed Mayfield Depot. This area behind Manchester’s Piccadilly Station was formerly a wasteland whose industrial heritage was largely forgotten so much that few locals knew its original name.  Currently on show are artefacts and images from the Mayfield Pattern Book\, Graham’s Dye Recipe Book and the Mayfield Grit Walk story cards which uncover the history of Thomas Hoyle and Sons Calico Printing Works and the dwellings and bathhouse which served the residents and workers following its demise. \nThe Cultural Masterplanning exhibition has been curated by Sam Hallas and produced by Dan Dubowitz of FLEX Manchester School of Architecture in collaboration with Manchester City Council\, Archives+\, and Manchester Art Gallery. DESCRIPTION:SMCC welcomes everyone to visit Manchester Central library to view a wide selection of members’ images. Pictures have been captured across a wide section of our members representing their individual skill\, technique and style. \nSMCC is an active\, friendly and progressive photography club offering a wide range of speakers\, outings and events. \nThe Club was formed in June 1952 by a group of friends in Didsbury\, led by Fred Veal FRPS\, FRSA\, the Club’s first President. The aim of the Club was to encourage “good friendship through photography” which is now the Club’s motto. \nThe club has a mentoring scheme for Club members by setting up small interest groups. These groups are each led by a couple of experienced leaders and cover Landscape\, People\, Urban/Street\, Macro Photography\, Astro Photography and a Basic Skills group. \nEach group arranges its own practical outings and review sessions\, where images are shared within the groups and constructive and supportive critique is given to help members improve their photography. Established in 1992 by Tanja Farman and Gavin Barlow as part of the original Manchester Festival\, Queer Up North quickly became a beacon for queer culture\, drawing artists and audiences from across the globe. Over its first decade\, the festival showcased groundbreaking performances and played a pivotal role in shaping Manchester’s identity as an inclusive and vibrant LGBTQIA+ city. \nIn late 2024\, Queer Up North 1992–2002: Celebrating Manchester’s LGBTQIA+ Heritage was awarded funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, with additional support from The Granada Foundation. This funding marked a significant milestone in preserving Manchester’s rich LGBTQIA+ heritage\, focusing on the Queer Up North festivals held between 1992 and 2002. \nAll items on display\, unless otherwise stated\, are drawn from the Queer Up North collection held at Manchester Central Library. SUMMARY:The Manchester Pop Trail – Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up exhibition celebrating the city’s musical heritage through Paul Wilde’s original artwork and research. \nThe Manchester Pop Trail offers a visual record of the city’s musical evolution\, through the creative work of writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde. Spanning genres from the Blues to Punk and Britpop\, this exhibition traces the city’s popular music story – exploring not only the artists who became household names\, but also the forgotten rehearsal rooms\, dancehalls\, clubs\, and community spaces that shaped Manchester’s sound. Many of these stories stretch back as far as 1929\, forming a timeline of popular music that has never been fully mapped. \nThe Origins of the Project \nPaul’s father\, Geoff Wilde\, was a respected local musician who performed in several Manchester bands and famously shared the same bill as The Beatles at the Cavern Club in 1961. Shaped by the music that filled his home and the stories shared by his father\, this early connection to musical history became the spark for a lifelong fascination with the hidden rock ’n’ roll landmarks beneath our noses. \nPaul began meticulously researching and illustrating the historic venues\, people\, and cultural milestones of Greater Manchester that have received little formal documentation and are at risk of disappearing from public memory. Over the years\, Paul’s instinct to preserve what others overlooked grew into a personal mission. \nEngaging the Public with the Story \nThis mission took public form through The Manchester Pop Trail\, Paul’s long-running column in the Manchester Evening News. Week after week\, he researched\, wrote\, and illustrated the city’s musical evolution\, creating a visual record that blended journalism\, heritage\, and art. His hand-drawn illustrations – later developed into ceramic artworks – offered a tactile way to “hold” the city’s music story\, turning research into objects that preserve memory. \nPaul’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. His work has been recognised and supported by leading figures from Manchester’s music community\, including Peter Hook\, Graham Gouldman\, and Graham Nash. He was also presented with a certificate for “keeping the 60s music alive” by members of bands such as The Hollies\, Herman’s Hermits\, and The Dreamers – a testament to the cultural value of his research and the authenticity of his storytelling. \nThe exhibition grew out of a connection made through Time Travellers Tea Room\, Manchester Histories’ community coffee morning where people come together to share stories\, explore the city’s heritage and meet others with an interest in Manchester’s past. After writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde shared the Manchester Pop Trail with the group\, facilitated by Yussuf M’Rabty\, conversations continued and developed into this exhibition at Manchester Histories Hub. \nThis exhibition marks an opportunity to bring together historians\, musicians\, supporters\, and anyone who believes Manchester’s music story deserves a permanent home. SUMMARY:Schinkel in Manchester 1826-2026
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of architectural models by students from the Manchester School of Architecture of early nineteenth buildings in Berlin and Manchester created to celebrate the bicentenary of the brief visit of the Prussian court architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) to Manchester on July 17 1826. \nDuring his ‘English’ journey Schinkel was brought into direct contact with the industrial progress of Britain in many sites across the country. In Manchester\, and specifically in Ancoats\, he saw an industrial town developing at full spate. As Nikolaus Pevsner described it Schinkel ‘had never seen anything like that\, and indeed could not have seen it anywhere else’. \nThe exhibition compares six of Schinkel’s buildings in Berlin with six similar contemporary buildings in Manchester\, by the architects Charles Barry (1795 – 1860)\, Francis Goodwin (1784-1835) and the anonymous ‘mere foremen’ (as Schinkel described them) who were building the mills and warehouses that were in his view ‘nothing but monstrous masses of red brick … without any trace of architecture …’ \nThere will also be a special talk about this exhibition in the Performance Space on 30 September – see event details here \nFree – just drop in. \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:Our Town Hall Heritage Evening Lecture with Hankinson Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \n\n\n\n\nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 22 September – will focus on the decorative paintwork restorations that have been made inside the building\, with a presentation by Phyllis Smith of Hankinson Whittle. \nThe Hankinson’s Heritage team is made up of highly skilled decorators and artists\, who undertake projects of varying scales\, encompassing the restorative work that is so important to maintain structural integrity and historical features of older buildings. SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition: What Makes a Great Coach?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the charity Women in Sport\, this photo exhibition celebrates everything women bring to coaching. \nStill in 2026\, women are still undervalued and underrepresented in sports coaching. Women in Sport’s research has found that 30% of female coaches report being bullied (twice as many as men) and are 18% less likely to say their opinions are heard and respected. Despite good intentions\, many approaches still focus on ‘fixing the women’\, encouraging resilience\, confidence or aspiration rather than improving the conditions that make it harder for women to enter and stay in coaching. The issue is not women’s capability; it is the system they work within. DESCRIPTION:A bilingual poetry reading and conversation exploring poetic craft\, creative vision\, and the nuances of poetry translation. \n\n\n\nThe Instituto Cervantes in Manchester invites you to the second session of its “Poetry Encounters” programme\, this time featuring a discussion between Argentinian poet Claudia Masin and author and academic Charlotte Shevchenko Knight. \nPoetry Encounters was created with the aim of promoting the translation of poetry from Spanish into English through a collaborative project involving translation students from the University of Liverpool. \nThe event will include readings of Claudia’s poems as she has written them in Spanish\, as well as their English translations\, followed by an exploration not only into the creative substance of the poem (motifs\, imagery\, structure…)\, but also the process of translating it from one language to another. The discussion will also discuss Claudia’s literary trajectory as a poet and the context in which her writing places itself. Alternative options available for younger children. \n2–2.10 pm – Chinese bamboo flute performance with Chinese Music Classroom \nShort performance on the dizi (Chinese bamboo flute)\, followed by a brief\, child-friendly introduction to the instrument. \n2.10–2.35 pm – Participatory music activity with Chinese Music Classroom \nJoin us for a simple group activity inspired by Kodály approaches and led by a Chinese music specialist using rhythm\, clapping\, call-and-response and easy pentatonic patterns. DESCRIPTION:Join Manchester Histories for Threads of a City: The Manchester Tapestry Project\, an ambitious community artwork celebrating the stories\, people and heritage of Greater Manchester. Together\, communities are helping to create 30 large tapestry panels exploring different aspects of the city-region’s history\, from 1853 to the present day. \nNow it’s time to bring those stories to life in stitch. Join our regular Monday stitching sessions at Manchester Central Library and contribute directly to the tapestry\, working alongside other participants on this unique collaborative artwork. Whether you’re an experienced stitcher\, a little rusty or keen to develop your skills\, all skill levels are welcome. You’ll have the opportunity to practise stitches before contributing to the tapestry\, with support available throughout. \nAll materials are provided\, along with hot drinks and biscuits\, and you can attend as many or as few sessions as you like. DESCRIPTION:The ReUnion is a powerful live performance celebrating the Cultural Heritage\, Music and Memories of the cast consisting of women of African/Caribbean descent who are honoured to be ‘Embracing Their Next Chapter’ and incorporating their lived experiences. \nIt explores identity\, belonging\, resilience and joy all whilst acknowledging the realities of racism in everyday life and all with a reflective and respectful approach. \nThe show is vibrant and presents a combination of both a Play and a Party – blending theatre with a social gathering and celebration. It includes\, dance\, audience interaction and opportunities to reminisce through the music of the time and era and culminating with post-show music to be enjoyed by all. \nDig out those; Bell Bottoms\, Mini\, Midi\, Maxi Skirt and Dresses\, Tank Tops\, Curly Perms\, Platform Shoes. With imagination engaged\, join the cast as they revisit the ‘Groovy’ club scene of Manchester and the excitement of ‘The Shrine’ in Lagos. \nThe ReUnion is the second show for the cast and follows on from the success of their first ever show Dominoes\, Dahlias + Oware which won two awards – Best Age Friendly Award together and Fantastic Family Award.
