SUMMARY:Architecture for the People - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Architecture for the People \nManchester City Architect’s Department\, 1902-2003 \nFor 101 years\, the City Architect’s Department in the Town Hall served the citizens and met diverse civic needs by designing hundreds of different municipal buildings. They ranged from grand airport terminals to the small public lavatories\, from the high profile like the new Free Trade Hall to the hidden away but essential facilities like mortuaries. \nFor the first time\, this exhibition presents a selection of the works delivered under the direction of the seven official City Architects spanning across the twentieth century. In the early days of the Department\, Manchester Corporation controlled gas and electricity undertakings\, most public transport\, schools\, police\, fire and ambulance services\, waste collection\, parks and recreation\, housing\, libraries\, crematoriums and more. Such responsibilities meant a need for new buildings and the upkeep of existing facilities. The City Architect’s Department designed and delivered these\, changing the face of the city and its suburbs\, providing thousands of new homes\, and scores of schools\, libraries\, public baths\, amongst a host of civic buildings. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in January 2018 and work then began on a labour of love: a once-in-a-lifetime chance to repair\, protect and update this architectural masterpiece for future generations. The Great Hall is the Town Hall’s centrepiece. It includes a huge variety of conservation and restoration projects and is a great example of the work we’re doing throughout the building. Our approach to the unique elements of this  space reflects the level of care needed for the whole project. SUMMARY:Funny Stuff – Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A creative and humorous response to grief\, memories and the stuff we accumulate\, hoard and hate to let go\, from Manchester comedy legend\, Lipservice Theatre Company. \nSue Ryding is one half of legendary comedy duo LipService. In 2022 her comedy partner Maggie Fox died and Sue was left with a shipping container full of stage props\, costumes\, wigs\, hats\, shoes\, sheep\, you name it. This exhibition looks at all the “stuff” we accumulate\, hoard and hate to let go. \nIn this humorous and creative response to grief\, Sue struggles to part with a life sized stuffed sheep\, a badger onesie\, some ruby slippers\, a sinking bog\, Charlotte Bronte’s knickers and a host of soft toys. \nTouring anecdotes are combined with archive footage from LipService shows. We follow the stories of things Sue has already given away\, the wicker horse that appeared every night in an improvised panto\, the vintage suitcases turned into a sculpture in Stockport\, the crazy Chief Exec of the Tall Ships Festival who dresses up as a fish! Not all the items will be making it back up the loft ladder\, so the audience is invited to take something home. \nSue is aiming to end up with “the right stuff”\, a small selection that captures the essence of LipService Theatre to go into a national theatre collection. SUMMARY:Bridge of Sunflowers - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Drop by the Reading and Ground Floor Oculus area to see this compelling exhibition composed of artwork by young Ukrainian artists from the city of Lviv. This unique collection explores the impacts of the ongoing conflict\, as well as the hopes and dreams of those living through it. \nParticipants were supported by the Sunflower Dreams Project\, which showcases the work of Ukrainian children in exhibitions across the European Union\, the United Kingdom and North America. The project was created and is supported exclusively by a team of multinational volunteers. \nCreative responses from young people in Manchester can be viewed alongside the artwork. These are the outcome of workshops run by creative arts charity Never Such Innocence (NSI)\, who give children and young people a voice on conflict. The workshops were led by expert practitioners – author Nik Perring and artist Alex Hinge. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 3 February – will focus on the work of the woodworking expertise of Swift Crafted\, with a presentation by Operations Director\, Paul Smith. Restoring the doors and panelling throughout the Town Hall’s many rooms and timber flooring too\,  Find out more about their trade\, their work and some of the features they’ve discovered in and around the Town Hall. \nWooden it be nice – restoring our doors\, panelling and timber floors: \nPaul Smith\, Swift Crafted’s Operations Director\, will present this lecture. DESCRIPTION:Nothing remained unchanged but the clouds by Alan J. Ward is an artist book in the fullest sense: a work conceived\, shaped\, and authored through artistic practice. Developed through sustained collaboration with the community of Grandpré in the French Ardennes\, the book traces stories held within German WWI postcards and transforms them into a living archive of memory\, material culture\, and shared authorship. \nThe launch will take the form of an illustrated conversation moderated by an arts commissioner familiar with Ward’s practice. Ward will be joined by a small panel of academic\, artist\, and language collaborators\, alongside voices from Grandpré. Together\, the discussion will weave local histories with contemporary perspectives\, while reanimating the enduring connection between Manchester and Charleville-Mézières\, the departmental capital. \nWith the support of Alliance Française\, a special display of selected artefacts from Archives+ and the North West Film Archive has been assembled specifically for the evening. These materials document the shared histories between Manchester and the Ardennes\, and sit alongside the themes explored in the book. \nThe evening will conclude with a question-and-answer session\, offering the audience an opportunity to engage directly with the panel\, followed by the chance to purchase signed\, discounted copies of the artist book. \nFree – reserve a seat via eventbrite here

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a theatrical–narrative journey through art\, memory and home. In this workshop\, children and young people will explore the world of Cypriot artist George Pol. Georgiou. Guided by the artworks\, children explore everyday elements that appear in Georgiou’s paintings — chairs\, houses\, horses — and transform them into symbols of feelings\, stories and lived experiences. A simple chair may become a keeper of memories; a house\, a feeling of belonging; light\, both the sun of Cyprus and the hope we carry within us. SUMMARY:Architecture for the People? Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening and discussion exploring Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \n\n\n\n\nOrganised in collaboration with The Modernist and the current exhibition at Central Library\, Architecture for the people: the works of Manchester City Architect’s Department (1902-2003)\, this Manchester Urban Film Series screening and discussion will revisit Manchester’s urban history and development from the 1940s to today. \nWe’ll be screening the 1947 documentary from the North West Film Archive collection\, A City Speaks\, which was a promotional film sponsored by the city council. As the BFI description summarizes: “Urban utopia beckons in this idealistic vision of postwar Manchester – fascinating to revisit as Northern Powerhouses and city devolution return to the agenda…Under the soaring\, sweeping direction of Paul Rotha\, it takes in themes of industry\, energy\, leisure and housing\, present\, past and future.” \nWe’ll use this as our starting point to reflect on Manchester’s historical urban development and the role of government within that as well as the resonances\, challenges or opportunities of the dramatically transformed landscape we face today. With a resurgence of interest in “new municipalism” and public ownership\, “it is worth remembering\,” as the exhibit notes\, “how much of the city’s operations were governed from the town hall. Manchester Corporation once controlled gas and electricity undertakings\, tramways and trolleybuses\, schools\, police\, fire and ambulance services\, waste collection\, parks and recreation\, housing\, libraries and more. Join us and Alliance Française de Manchester for this month’s film\, ‘Le Petit Nicolas – Qu’est-ce qu’on attend pour être heureux?’\, by Amandine Fredon and Benjamin Massoubre (2022\, Animated movie\, 1h26) \nSketched on a large white sheet somewhere between Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés\, Jean-Jacques Sempé and René Goscinny bring to life a cheerful\, mischievous little boy: le Petit Nicolas. Between friendship\, quarrels\, scuffles\, games\, mischief\, and punishments galore\, Nicolas experiences a childhood full of joy and learning. As the story unfolds\, the boy slips into his creators’ studio and amusingly calls out to them. Sempé and Goscinny tell him about how they met\, their friendship\, but also their careers\, their secrets\, and their own childhood. \nThese free screenings are offered with the support of the Institut Français. Unless otherwise indicated\, all Alliance Française de Manchester cultural events are open and accessible to everyone. Her novel\, Your Friend Forever\, was published in 2021\, and her book of short stories\, Two Similar Looking Men with Umbilical Hernias\, illustrated by Claire Robinson\, was published in 2025.

Take some time for yourself and escape into a story.  \nJoin our Cosy Reading Club at Manchester Central Library\, our new silent reading group\, offering a relaxed\, shared space to read in peace and quiet in the company of others. \nThis is no ordinary book club. There’s no pressured discussions\, there’s no set text. Simply bring along something you’d like to read. \nNot sure what to read? We’ve got you covered. Send us a message directly and we’ll connect you with our friendly library team who can help you find your next favourite book. \nThe evening is designed for anyone who enjoys reading\, wants a gentle break from busy schedules or simply wants to avoid the rush hour home. Everyone is welcome in our space. \nWhat to expect:1 hour – Quiet Reading \nQuiet\, individual reading in a shared space\nA calm\, welcoming environment with no pressure to speak \n30 minutes – Optional Group Sharing \nAt the end of the session\, there will be an opportunity to share about your reading experience with others\, this is only an invite and there is no expectation to stay or take part\nFree light refreshments are provided. Stay as long or as little as you like\, this is your space to slow down\, escape to a new literary world and find peace in the heart of the city. \nTickets are on a ‘pay what you can’ offer and can be booked here or from the link below. \nPlease note: this is a ticketed event and\, while we will make every effort to welcome everyone to the event\, there are a limited number of seats available.
