DESCRIPTION:Writer Cathy Crabb is running a weekly drop in for anyone who would like to spend a couple of hours strolling through storytelling. \nWith a different exercise per week it could be anything from a screenplay to flash fiction to songwriting – just to give your mind a welcome circuit break and a bit of escapism. \nThe exercises are designed around inclusivity – whether you are an experienced writer or just fancy exercising your imagination. This is a kind and inclusive group and people from all backgrounds and abilities are very welcome. SUMMARY:Fly On The Wall Press Christmas Celebrations!
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate four years of northern indie publishing with Fly on the Wall Press – bring your best Xmas outfit for a chance to win a prize! \nThe four year celebration of Fly on the Wall Press invites all members of the public both new and much-loved to be a part of our Christmas antics at Manchester Central Library. \nThere will be two rooms in the library’s performance space. One will be dedicated to workshops run by Fly on the Wall Press authors (paid\, sign up in advance)\, the other a free space with book tables (FOTW books and publisher friends announced below) and a performance space\, with an all day running schedule of poets and fiction writers. \nWe will be running a raffle for the chance to win a selection of free books and a competition for best dressed Christmas-themed outfit! \nAt the end of the day there will be a short talk from Managing Director of Fly on the Wall Press\, Isabelle Kenyon\, and a film. \nDetail to be added as events develop but current running order of the afternoon… \nRoom 1: \nPublisher tables: Saraband\, Young Identity\, Stairwell Books\, Northodox\, Hidden Voice Publishing\, Fly on the Wall Press and Fawn Press. \n1.35-1.55pm Fat Roland and David Hartley bring spoken word night ‘Bad Language’ vibes and ‘Fauna’ (longlisted for the Edge Hill Prize) has an outing! \n1.55-2.05pm York much-loved publisher Stairwell Books’ Clint Wastling will perform poetry from Quiet Flows the Hull \n2.05-2.15pm – Manchester award-winning publisher Saraband has a special appearance with author Adam Farrer \n2.15-2.20pm – Bethany Rivers performs from 2019 chapbook\, ‘the sea refuses no river’ \n2.20-2.40pm – Mancunian Ways Anthology: Performance medley from contributors Penny Sharman\, Alicia Fitton\, Fiona Boylan\, David Keyworth\, Joseph Darlington\, Sarah Pritchard \n2.40-2.50pm – Claire HM performs from ‘How To Bring Him Back’\, part of our 2021 shorts season \n2.50pm- 3.00pm Tom McColl reads from ‘Grenade Genie’\, a 2020 full poetry collection \n3.10-3.20pm Louise Finnigan performs from ‘Muscle and Mouth’\, part of our 2021 shorts season \n3.20pm – 3.30pm Demos Rising Anthology: Dipika Mummery\, Caitlin Kendall \n3.30-3.40pm Jiye Lee performs from ‘Aftereffects’ \n(Everyone now bundled into the other room for FOTW film showcase and slides – also includes prizes for best dressed Xmas outfit and raffle being drawn) \nRoom 2: \n1.35pm – 2.15pm Ruth Brandt Workshop: ‘Starting with Place’ (Suitable for both fiction writers and poets! Bring a pen and paper.) Starting with Place – Places inspire us\, evoke emotions and memories\, restrict our behaviour\, create conflict – core elements of stories and poems. Using written exercises\, this workshop will help you investigate place as the starting point for your writing. \n2.25pm – 3.05pm Graeme Hall and Clare Reddaway Workshop on building character (Come with a character you are currently working on developing for these exercises!) Writing is all about great characters\, right? Explore ways to deepen your characters’ worlds and make them more three dimensional. \n3.15-3.35pm Publisher Drop In (20 mins) – Pre-booked (full) consultation \n3.45pm – 4.10pm – FREE – Isabelle Kenyon talk and short film featuring FOTW’s international authors \n4.10-4.30pm – last chance to buy books before we close! 🙂

SUMMARY:Women's Community Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:International Women’s Day (IWD) is returning to Manchester as a celebration of women’s empowerment\, equality and contributions to the city at Manchester Central Library on Saturday 8 March. \nLed and inspired by an already significant history of pioneering women\, IWD 2025 is a chance for women across all generations and dedicated allies to come together in advancing women’s rights in Manchester and around the world. \nThe theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Accelerate Action’\, which calls on supporters of gender equality to act against systemic barriers women from all backgrounds face in their personal and professional environments. \nIn recent years\, Manchester City Council has marked IWD with a dedicated ‘Walk for Women’ event. This year\, however\, the Council has joined forces with a diverse range of women-led community organisations to co-design a different approach. \nFunding was made available for community organisations to host IWD events across the city through the annual IWD grants programme. A celebratory community-led programme of workshops\, performances and discussions has also been planned for the day itself at Manchester Central Library based around the acronym HER: Heal Encourage\, Revive. \nThe events for IWD 2025 are: \nHeal – Performance Space   \n·  Flourish Together; Mindfulness Activity for relaxation and meditation\, 11am-1pm \n·  Equal Education Chances; letter writing and positive affirmations session\, 11:20am-12:15pm \nEncouraged – Performance Space 2 and 3   \n·    Community Thriving Together; sharing personal stories and overcoming challenges\, 11am-11:50am \n·   Trailblazers;  Creating bookmarks and stitching \n·   Young Identity with Shirley May; poetry performance by Young Identity members\, 11:55am-12:15pm \n·   Flourish Together; a 30-minute fireside chat chaired by Nickala Torkington about women changemakers\, 12:20pm-12:50pm. \nRevived – Performance Space 2 and 3   \n·     Bollyfit; an exercise class inspired by multicultural dance\, 1pm-1:30pm \n·     Councillor Ermina Bell will give a closing speech about the event\, 1:35pm-1:45pm \n·      DJ set to inspire and uplift \nGlass Room/Sensory Space   \n·     Flourish Together; Bookable pop-up spa for treatments for 20 mins including Indian Head Massage in a clothed and seated setting\, 11am-2pm \nThe events on the day will be accompanied by partner stalls of specialist community organisations including Manchester Action on Street Health (MASH)\, Manchester Rape Crisis\, Fikawele African and Caribbean Mental Health\, Walksafe  and Ahmed Iqbal Ullah (AIU) RACE Centre who will be on hand to raise awareness and promote their services. \nCouncillor Erinma Bell\, Lead Member for Women\, said: “Manchester has long been a city that has championed and supported women in the fight for gender equality.    \n“It’s fantastic to see the range of creativity and innovation in the events this year for International Women’s Day with the aim of accelerating further action for women to thrive personally and professionally. “I would encourage women from all backgrounds and generations to get involved\, because there is something for everyone and to advocate for more allies join in on the celebrations and inform our priorities for advancing women’s equality this year.”   \nFor more information or to book your place visit Women’s Community Festival.
