DESCRIPTION:One of Iran’s leading poets\, Azita Ghahreman’s work is lyrical and intimate\, addressing themes of loss\, exile and female desire\, as well as the changing face of her country. Her latest collection\, Negative of a Group Photograph\, brings together three decades of poems brought to life in English by the poet Maura Dooley\, working in collaboration with translator Elhum Shakerifar. The poems run the gamut of Azita’s experience: from her childhood in the Khorasan region of south-eastern Iran\, to her exile to Sweden; from Iran’s book-burning years and the war in Iraq\, to her unexpected encounters with love. At this bilingual event\, Azita will read alongside Maura\, who will share her English translations of Azita’s poems. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Literature Festival is delighted to welcome Patrisse Khan-Cullors to Manchester to discuss her illuminating memoir\, When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. She will be in conversation with Manchester Literature Festival Patron\, writer and poet Jackie Kay. \nOne of the most prominent activists of her generation\, Patrisse is an artist\, organizer and freedom fighter from Los Angeles\, California. She’s also a Fullbright scholar\, an NAACP History Maker and a Los Angeles Times’ Civil Rights Leader for the 21st Century. Patrisse began her journey as a community organizer at sixteen and has co-founded several activist and civil rights movements in the US\, including Dignity\, Power Now and Black Lives Matter. \nCo-written with author and journalist Asha Bandele\, When They Call You a Terrorist is a courageous and extraordinary account of survival\, strength and resistance. Informed by Patrisse’s personal story and experiences\, her memoir shows what led her to become a founder of Black Lives Matter\, seeking to end the culture that declares black life expendable. He is a leading authority on the subject of Peterloo\, Chartism etc. In 2016 he was interviewed by Melvin Bragg on the BBC Radio 4 show ‘The Matter of the North’ exploring the radical movements that sprang from the North. His recently published book “Return to Peterloo” offers new perspectives and crucial new evidence. \nDr Poole will be signing and selling his book – ‘Return to Peterloo’ after the talk. \nSupported by Manchester Histories\, HLF\, National Lottery Players and Manchester City Council.

DESCRIPTION:Library Lounge is delighted to announce an evening of conversation and questions with BAFTA winning screenwriter Danny Brocklehurst. \nDanny’s TV credits include In The Dark\, Ordinary Lies\, The Accused\, Exile\, Talk To Me\, Shameless\, The Driver and Clocking Off. \nHe also co-wrote the recent SKY One international hit show The Five – based on the work of  best-selling American crime writer Harlan Coben. Prior to becoming a professional screenwriter Danny\, who is also an International Emmy winner\, worked as a freelance journalist for a range of regional and national publications including The Guardian\, The Big Issue\, The Manchester Evening News and City Life. \nTickets to this event are free – but donations will be encouraged on the night in support of Manchester Central Library Development Trust\, the charity which supports the work of Central Library. \n  \nAbout Library Lounge \nLibrary Lounge is a new series of relaxed ‘in conversation’ events featuring interesting and engaging guests hosted at Manchester Central Library. \nParticipants receive no fee for taking part – and any funds raised\, through either ticket sales or donations on the night\, go directly to Manchester Central Library Development Trust (registered charity no. 1150161). \nThe Development Trust supports the work of Central Library across a wide range of areas. This includes allowing it to stay open for longer and more often for activities\, including special Sunday Fundays for families. \nIt also helps to fund special events\, exhibitions\, festivals\, education projects and community programmes.

DESCRIPTION:Hear the stories behind some of the magazine’s featured headlines; \n“Anderton on the rampage” \n“Poppers the price you pay” \n“Gay sauna raid” \n“Job security for lesbian and gay workers” \n“New gay bar in Bolton” \nAmateur yet unashamed\, over its lifespan (1978- 1986) The Mancunian Gay magazine documented the evolution of the LGBT rights movement in the UK. Its front pages shed light on a dynamic and vibrant era for queer community activism during the 1980’s. An era equally defined by homophobia\, police harassment and the AIDS crisis. \nManchester Pride in association with Archives+ at Manchester Central Library are delving into the past to uncover some of Manchester’s LGBT hidden histories. \nJoin us as we hear the fascinating story behind the birth of the magazine from one of the founding members of the Mancunian Gay collective\, Paul Fairweather; including how a magazine produced in a kitchen in Greater Manchester gave dispersed and isolated queer people an outlet for participation and inclusion by offering a voice which resonated with many. \nTo commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act\, Manchester Pride has commissioned a special anniversary edition of the The Mancunian Gay Magazine which attendees will be able to take as a momentum of this historic occasion. \nFollowing an exploration of the magazine and its impact on queer culture in Manchester in the early 80s there will be a panel discussion around it’s lasting legacy and the chance for attendees to carry out a Q&A with the panel. \nTickets to the event are limited but free to all who wish to attend. \nAll guests will recieve a welcome drink and a copy of the special anniversary edition of the Mancunian Gay to take home with them.
