SUMMARY:A Celebration of Ted Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Frequently ranked as one of the Twentieth Century’s greatest writers\, Yorkshire poet Ted Hughes produced a significant body of work\, including original poetry and translations. His early poems were rooted in nature\, detailing the beauty and violence of the landscape and its animals (The Hawk in the Rain)\, while later pieces often used or reworked mythology\, examining the dark subconscious (Crow). His final collection\, Birthday Letters\, looked at his relationship with his fellow poet Sylvia Plath. To mark the 20th anniversary of Hughes’s death\, we have invited a number of contemporary poets\, including Amanda Dalton (Stray\, How to Disappear)\, Zaffar Kunial (Us)\, Carola Luther (Walking the Animals)\, Andrew McMillan (Physical) and John McAuliffe (The Way In) to perform some of their favourite poems by the late laureate.

DESCRIPTION:Inscribe / Peepal Tree\, publisher of Caribbean and Black British Literature\, invited poets to contemplate the ‘unspoken essential’ and ‘intangible tangible’ for their Filigree collection. We’re delighted to have three of the contributors perform at this special MLF event. Victoria Adukwei Bulley is a British-born Ghanian poet and writer\, who recently published the pamphlet\, Girl B. A former Barbican Young Poet\, her work is bold\, ambitious and curious. Rachel Long is a poet\, facilitator\, and the leader of Octavia\, a poetry collective for women of colour at the Southbank Centre. Her playful and moving poems have been published in numerous anthologies\, and she is currently working on her first collection. Momtaza Mehri is a Somali-British poet\, essayist and editor. She was co-winner of the 2018 Brunel International African Poetry Prize\, and her urgent and dynamic poems landed her the role of Young People’s Poet Laureate for London. Join us for an evening celebrating contemporary Black British poetry.

DESCRIPTION:‘The Alan Bennett of poetry’ – The Scotsman\n‘Dovetails bittersweet poetry with a sublimely observant wit’ – The Guardian \nFlapjack Press and Manchester Libraries are proud to host the launch of Henry Normal’s new collection of poetry\, ‘This Phantom Breath’. \nWritten between August 2016 and August 2017\, the poems in this collection are concerned with love\, death\, truth and other distractions. \nHenry is co-writer and producer of some of the very biggest hits of British TV and cinema over the past decade and a half. He co-wrote Mrs Merton\, The Royle Family and much of Steve Coogan’s early output. He’s produced everything from 24 Hour Party People\, to Red Dwarf\, Nighty Night and Philomena. \nHe may be less well-known as a poet\, though he is no less esteemed. Influenced by the Liverpool poets; Adrian Mitchell\, John Cooper Clarke and ‘ranting’ poets like Steven ‘Seething’ Wells\, along with poets on the cabaret circuit like John Hegley\, Henry was a stalwart of the performance poetry scene of the 1980s\, before he was diverted into TV. He is the founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Literature festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. \nSupporting Henry will be Pete Ramskill\, Nottingham-based painter / sculptor / designer / poet\, reading from his new Flapjack Press collection Selected Moments of Machine Life. \nPete has had two previous books of poems published; Strike and Personal Vendetta (the latter under his pseudonym\, John Bitumen). His more recent poems explore love and family relationships whilst there’s still a deeply political edge to works about the world we choose to tolerate. \n‘It’s no coincidence that Pete Ramskill is also a stone carver\, he brings the same tools to his poetry – a hammer and chisel…’

Apart from this ‘newness’\, and talent\, and what W S Graham would call ‘the rarer gift of application’\, what these writers happen to have in common is that at some point The Poetry Business has been fortunate enough to encounter them – either through residential courses\, The New Poets Prize\, or workshops and mentoring schemes\, such as The Writing Squad. \nReaders will include Northern Writers Award Winner Jasmine Simms\, Now Then’s Word LIfe Editor Elizabeth Gibson\, Foyles Young Poet of the Year Fielding Ronshaugen\, and Gregory Kearns who was Highly Commended in this year’s Poetry Business New Poet Awards. \nProject M is a workshop of writers aged 17-21 run by The Writing Squad and Manchester Literature Festival. Over the last year they have been meeting monthly with Squad writers James Varney and Lenni Sanders. They will share some of their work as a curtain raiser to the Introduction X anthology.

SUMMARY:Henry Normal - 'Raining Upwards' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:  \nHenry Normal is a writer\, poet\, TV and film producer\, founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Manchester Literature Festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. In June 2017 he was honoured with a special BAFTA for services to television. \nRaining Upwards is Henry’s first all new poetry collection in over twenty years. The poems explore relationships with science\, nature\, humanity and other vital matters we are usually too busy to think about. \nHenry co-wrote and script edited the multi-award winning Mrs Merton Show and the spin-off series Mrs Merton and Malcolm. He also co-created and co-wrote the first series of The Royle Family. With Steve Coogan\, he co-wrote the BAFTA-winning Paul and Pauline Calf Video Diaries\,Coogan’s Run\, Tony Ferrino\, Doctor Terrible\, all of Steve’s live tours\, and the film The Parole Officer. Setting up Baby Cow Productions Ltd in 1999\, Henry Executive Produced all\, and script edited many\, of the shows of its seventeen and a half year output during his tenure as MD. Highlights of the Baby Cow output during this time include Oscar-nominated Philomena\, Gavin and Stacey\, I Believe in Miracles\, Moone Boy\,The Mighty Boosh\, Marion and Geoff\, Red Dwarf\, Uncle\, Nighty Night\,Hunderby\, Camping and Alan Partridge. Since retiring in April 2016\, Henry has written and performed two BBC Radio 4 shows\, A Normal Family and A Normal Life\, combining comedy\, poetry and stories about bringing up his autistic son. He was recently given a Honorary Doctorate of letters by Nottingham Trent University and has also had a beer named after him in Nottingham. \nAdult poetry\, published in paperback and eBook by Flapjack Press. \nNo need to book. SUMMARY:Henry Normal: Travelling Second Class Through Hope
DESCRIPTION:Better known as co-writer of award-winning TV and film shows such as The Royle Family\, The Mrs Merton Show\, The Parole Officer\, Coogan’s Run and Paul Calf\, and producer of\, amongst many others\, Oscar-nominated Philomena\, Gavin and Stacey\, Moone Boy\, Uncle and Alan Partridge\, Henry Normal started his writing career as a poet. \nBorn in Nottingham\, Henry’s writing career blossomed during his time in Manchester. He set up the Manchester Poetry Festival in the nineties\, which continues to this day having widened to become the Manchester Literature Festival. In 2016 he set up the Nottingham Poetry Festival\, now an annual event. \nIn the early eighties he performed at pop concerts\, cabaret and comedy clubs\, folk clubs\, jazz clubs\, factories\, hospitals\, schools and poetry events. Henry toured with Pulp in their early days and later with Lemn Sissay and I am Kloot’s John Bramwell\, then called Johnny Dangerously. \nHenry performed full runs at the Edinburgh Festival with Hattie Hayridge\, Linda Smith\, and his one man show ‘Encyclopedia Poetica’ – later to become a 4 part BBC Radio 4 series. \nSpotted at Edinburgh\, Henry was given a six episode Channel 4 series called Packet of Three\, co-starring Frank Skinner and Jenny Eclair. He has since worked on over 400 TV and radio shows and films\, as either script editor or producer or both. \nIn 2016 Henry was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by Nottingham Trent University. \nSince his first book Is Love Science Fiction? in 1986 he had eight further books published up to 1994. In 2016\, after an absence of 22 years\, Henry published Staring Directly at the Eclipse and has begun performing poetry again at major Literature Festivals.
