SUMMARY:An Evening with Colm Tóibín
DESCRIPTION:MANCHESTER LITERATURE FESTIVAL \n\n‘I can make no sense of the present. It is all confusion. I know nothing about the future.’ In his extraordinary new novel\, The Magician\, Colm Tóibín conjures up the past and the life of writer Thomas Mann. Against the backdrop of two world wars\, Colm charts Mann’s rise to prominence and the story of his family life as he grapples with deep seated feelings about his homeland of Germany and his desire for young men. Colm is the award-winning Irish author of nine novels including Brooklyn\, Nora Webster and The Testament of Mary. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times and has won both the Costa Novel Award and the International Dublin Literary Award. Colm will be in conversation with poet John McAuliffe. \nPresented in partnership with Centre for New Writing and Creative Manchester. \nPlease note: We have reduced the capacity at this venue to increase space between seats so everyone can enjoy the event safely. SUMMARY:An Evening with Sarah Butler
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate #LibrariesWeek with Manchester Libraries and acclaimed author Sarah Butler. \nSarah is a writer and literature activist who lives in Manchester. She has three novels published by Picador in the UK: Ten Things I’ve Learnt About Love\, Before The Fire and Jack and Bet which was published in early 2020. \nIn 2007\, Sarah established the literature consultancy UrbanWords\, through which she explores the relationship between writing and place through prose\, poetry and participatory projects. \nSarah joined Manchester Metropolitan University as Lecturer in Creative Writing in June 2018. \nSaran will be in conversation and reading from her latest novel\, followed by a Q&A and the opportunity for audience questions. \nJack and Bet \nJack is a man of few words\, married to a woman of many. He and Bet have been together for seventy years — almost a lifetime — and happily so\, for the most part. \nAll Jack and Bet want is to enjoy the time they have left together\, in the flat they have tried to make their home. Their son Tommy has other ideas: he wants them to live somewhere with round-the-clock care\, hot meals\, activities. Bet thinks they can manage just fine. \nWhen they strike up an unlikely friendship with Marinela\, a young Romanian woman\, Bet thinks she has found the perfect solution — one that could change Marinela’s life as well as theirs. But this means revisiting an old love affair\, and confronting a long-buried secret she has kept hidden from everyone\, even Jack\, for many years. \nTender\, moving\, and beautifully told\, Jack and Bet is an unforgettable novel about love and loss\, the joys and regrets of a long marriage\, and the struggle to find a place to call home. \nThe event will take place via Live Webinar. We’ll send all the details on how you can join the event in the confirmation email.

SUMMARY:John Darwin - I Meet Myself Returning
DESCRIPTION:Author reading and book signing. \nWith special guest Geneviève L. Walsh. \n“Whichever way I take \nI meet myself returning.” \nA poetic journey from the mills and moors of the industrial north to the meals and mosques of the Byzantine middle-east and back again. \nI Meet Myself Returning is about finding your feet in our ever-convoluted world and letting them take you to a place to call your own. \nAnd\, occasionally\, stopping off for a pint. \n“This is a book about location. Feeling at home. \nIt’s about feeling homesick when you don’t know where home is. \nMy permanent home is in Manchester. I have lived there for 28 years\, although it felt like home for many years before\, through football and music. \nI have felt at home as a very young lad in St Albans\, Hertfordshire\, where I was born… In West Wales on childhood family holidays… In Yorkshire where I grew up. \nBrief moments of joy in the arms of a loving family\, despite an unhappy education and suffering Leeds United winning trophies (well\, two) whilst my club struggled and failed. \nIt’s about finding a foreign culture which made me welcome and feeling loved… In Turkey\, the streets\, bars and bridges of Istanbul are my second home. \nIt’s about the joy of lazy summers with loved ones on the coast. \nIt’s about the accumulation of wealth\, acquisition\, the constant striving for more things; the things which make us sad.” \n– John Darwin

SUMMARY:Gerry Potter: Manchester Isn’t the Greatest City in the World: The Rise and Rise of The Bourgeois Zeitgeist
DESCRIPTION:Gerry Potter presents: Manchester Isn’t the Greatest City in the World: The Rise and Rise of The Bourgeois Zeitgeist. With special guest Dave Viney \nPart love letter to his adopted home city of Manchester\, part critique of the arts and governing bodies (both specific and societal)\, Gerry’s eighth collection of autobiographical\, domestic/fantastic theatre-verse is a socio-political\, hard-hittin’ ‘n’ thought-provokin’ collection of poetry\, prose and plays. \nAdhering to working-class and socialist principles\, this polemic discourse on the The Bourgeois Zeitgeist challenges perceptions\, misrepresentations and acceptance\, and acts as a rallying call for those seeking to confront privilege and injustice. \nFeatures 90 poems\, 2 plays\, a 20\,000 word treatise on ‘The Bourgeois Zeitgeist’ and an 8\,000 word ‘Outroduction’. \nContains adult themes throughout / LGBTQ+. \n“It really is incredibly easy to get an audience to applaud anything these days\, TED Talks and The X Factor have seen to that\, you kinda just have to tell them something Positivia-inspired dripping in Inspirationalism and they’ll unanimously roar. There seems to be a major-city patriotic jingoism manifesting too\, not just here in Manchester\, everywhere; it now appears all cities are the greatest cities in the world. SUMMARY:A Celebration of Ted Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Frequently ranked as one of the Twentieth Century’s greatest writers\, Yorkshire poet Ted Hughes produced a significant body of work\, including original poetry and translations. His early poems were rooted in nature\, detailing the beauty and violence of the landscape and its animals (The Hawk in the Rain)\, while later pieces often used or reworked mythology\, examining the dark subconscious (Crow). His final collection\, Birthday Letters\, looked at his relationship with his fellow poet Sylvia Plath. To mark the 20th anniversary of Hughes’s death\, we have invited a number of contemporary poets\, including Amanda Dalton (Stray\, How to Disappear)\, Zaffar Kunial (Us)\, Carola Luther (Walking the Animals)\, Andrew McMillan (Physical) and John McAuliffe (The Way In) to perform some of their favourite poems by the late laureate.

SUMMARY:Henry Normal - 'This Phantom Breath' Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:‘The Alan Bennett of poetry’ – The Scotsman\n‘Dovetails bittersweet poetry with a sublimely observant wit’ – The Guardian \nFlapjack Press and Manchester Libraries are proud to host the launch of Henry Normal’s new collection of poetry\, ‘This Phantom Breath’. \nWritten between August 2016 and August 2017\, the poems in this collection are concerned with love\, death\, truth and other distractions. \nHenry is co-writer and producer of some of the very biggest hits of British TV and cinema over the past decade and a half. He co-wrote Mrs Merton\, The Royle Family and much of Steve Coogan’s early output. He’s produced everything from 24 Hour Party People\, to Red Dwarf\, Nighty Night and Philomena. \nHe may be less well-known as a poet\, though he is no less esteemed. Influenced by the Liverpool poets; Adrian Mitchell\, John Cooper Clarke and ‘ranting’ poets like Steven ‘Seething’ Wells\, along with poets on the cabaret circuit like John Hegley\, Henry was a stalwart of the performance poetry scene of the 1980s\, before he was diverted into TV. He is the founder of the Manchester Poetry Festival (now the Literature festival) and co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival. \nSupporting Henry will be Pete Ramskill\, Nottingham-based painter / sculptor / designer / poet\, reading from his new Flapjack Press collection Selected Moments of Machine Life. \nPete has had two previous books of poems published; Strike and Personal Vendetta (the latter under his pseudonym\, John Bitumen). His more recent poems explore love and family relationships whilst there’s still a deeply political edge to works about the world we choose to tolerate. \n‘It’s no coincidence that Pete Ramskill is also a stone carver\, he brings the same tools to his poetry – a hammer and chisel…’

DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the launch of Introduction X\, The Poetry Business New Poets anthology. \nIntroduction X is a gathering of outstanding poets at an early stage in their writing careers. Apart from this ‘newness’\, and talent\, and what W S Graham would call ‘the rarer gift of application’\, what these writers happen to have in common is that at some point The Poetry Business has been fortunate enough to encounter them – either through residential courses\, The New Poets Prize\, or workshops and mentoring schemes\, such as The Writing Squad. \nReaders will include Northern Writers Award Winner Jasmine Simms\, Now Then’s Word LIfe Editor Elizabeth Gibson\, Foyles Young Poet of the Year Fielding Ronshaugen\, and Gregory Kearns who was Highly Commended in this year’s Poetry Business New Poet Awards. \nProject M is a workshop of writers aged 17-21 run by The Writing Squad and Manchester Literature Festival. Over the last year they have been meeting monthly with Squad writers James Varney and Lenni Sanders. They will share some of their work as a curtain raiser to the Introduction X anthology.
