SUMMARY:Faustus: Cotton Famine Poems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of the poetry of the Lancashire Cotton Famine (1861-65)\, featuring an exclusive performance by the traditional folk band Faustus\, who have set several of the poems to music. The Lancashire Cotton Famine is a fascinating period in British history; largely caused by the Union blockade of Confederacy slave-grown cotton exports during the American Civil War\, it led to mass unemployment across Lancashire. Despite their hardship\, many labourers drew inspiration from their situation\, to pen moving and satirical poems.  This previously-neglected body of poems has recently been collected from local Victorian newspapers in the Lancashire and Manchester area\, through a major research project led by Dr Simon Rennie (University of Exeter). Faustus are a highly-respected ensemble\, made up of three of the leading lights of their generation: Benji Kirkpatrick (Seth Lakeman Band\, Bellowhead)\, Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy\, Whapweasel) and Paul Sartin (Bellowhead\, Belshazzar’s Feast).

SUMMARY:Word Central: Open Mic/George Melling Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:WORD CENTRAL \na semaphore-exploding mind-flow \nopen mic poetry & spoken word hosted by Tony Curry  \nWith very special guest George Melling\nAuthor of I’m Having the Rhyme of My Life \nGeorge came to poetry late in life\, following the death of his wife\, Alwyn\, and his son\, Stephen.  Clasped tightly within the bosom of his poetry family\, he has blossomed as a poet\, a performer\, an actor\, and a scribe of enormous gentleness\, subtlety and genuine laugh-out-loud humour. This is his second collection\, the first being a CD of 12 poems\, Th’Owd Chap\, the proceeds of which are donated to Wigan and Leigh Hospice. \nCovering such wide-ranging themes as unsolicited phone calls\, foraging for magic mushrooms (yes\, you read that right)\, and the perils of trying to find teacakes in the supermarket \nthis collection shines a bright and honest light on the indignities\, vulnerabilities\, aches\, pains and gallows humour of old age. Nothing is spared from its focus\, not even the forensic inspection of ‘Ode to a Number Two’. \nIn live performance\, George can have a whole roomful of people rocking with laughter\, and in the blink of an eye\, reduce them to tears. This translates perfectly on to the page. Employing all of the emotions to brilliant effect\, these poems/stories take sharp turns\, and very often pull the rug from beneath your feet when least expected. He possesses a deft touch with humour and poignancy\, and is not shy at showing the reader just how precious\, and vicious\, human life and death can be. \nGathering the world around him in a big warm hug of inclusion\, even “fatty blackbird” who “shits on mi wall”\, he acknowledges the terrible deprivations of displaced people everywhere\, and is thankful for the small stuff. \nFrom the Aberfan disaster to his beloved Wigan rugby games\, the unimaginable grief of losing his only son and beloved wife bleeds into many of the poems\, and we are shown the absolute necessity of love\, encouragement and support to the frailty of human life. \nAs with all of the other titles related to Flapjack Press\, this collection is beautifully put together\, with a matte cover\, excellent photography from Sharon Lowe and Steven Derbyshire\, and perfect typesetting. It is a joy to hold and read. \nThe open mic is now full \nTo get your name on the reserve list email mail@flapjackpress.co.uk\nNB Open mic slots are 3 minutes maximum \nWord Central Facebook Group | Facebook Event Page | Twitter: @WordCentralMcr\nIn association with Flapjack Press and Manchester Library & Information Service

SUMMARY:War Memories
DESCRIPTION:With the endorsement of WarGen\, Manchester Central Library together with one of its volunteer groups\, the Manchester Indie Film Makers Group (MIFMG)\, are presenting a single performance of War Memories\, a production written by the MIFMG using film and written material from the published WarGen pages on the internet. WarGen is currently uploading film and transcriptions of the experiences of both veterans and civilians during World War 2. \nThis performance is timed to be close to this year’s Armistice Day\, just one week later\, and will be in remembrance of all who lived and showed such bravery during the First and Second World Wars. \nThe performance will consist of film projection and live acting for approximately one hour\, followed by a cream tea and an opportunity to meet others at the event. Young people will produce short content for social media during the event\, interacting with veterans and their friends and families. \nAll are welcome\, please book your place by phoning Ruth Jacobson on 0161 234 1981 or email r.jacobson@manchester.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Just an Ordinary Lawyer
DESCRIPTION:“The British Empire was trying desperately to hold on to its colonial possessions by any means … and the foul would often override the fair.” \nTayo Aluko follows the multi-award winning Call Mr Robeson with another brilliantly put-together history lesson delivered as art\, as we host the first performance in the North West. Nigerian Tunji Sowande quietly breaks through multiple barriers to become Britain’s first Black judge in 1978. Also a fine concert singer and keen cricket lover\, he muses on international politics and history as they affect the Black world from Africa to the USA and Britain\, from the point of view of one who would rather watch sports\, and spread love and peace through the medium of song.

SUMMARY:Word Central Open Mic Night featuring Genevieve Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Open Mic Poetry & Spoken Word hosted by Tony Curry.\nWith special guest Genevieve L. Walsh.\nWednesday 3rd May 2017\, 6pm – 8pm [doors open 5.30pm]. Free entry.\nManchester Central Library\, St Peter’s Square\, Manchester M2 5PD.\nTo book an open mic slot (4 minutes max) – please email mail@flapjackpress.co.uk to get on the reserve list. \nGeneviève L. Walsh’s debut solo collection covers her first five years of performing her punk-song-length poetry about love\, hatred\, aggressive platitudes\, sexual politics\, alienation and inebriation. \nIncludes a Foreword by Henry Normal. \n“A collection full of passion and subversion … keen and urgent with an untamed beauty – like a puma caught under a streetlight. She chooses her language and targets with precision and infuses humour and fight in every verse.” – Henry Normal\, poet \n“Rejecting the beige and embracing the dark\, this collection is a lyrical and defiant hymn to vodka nights and concrete days. Shot through with nostalgia and the fear of losing fellow dancers to normality.” – Kate Fox\, Stand-up Poet \n“A unique and passionately inclusive voice guides us with incredible skill and dexterity through everything that unites us: love\, loss\, and drunk conversations. This book is a brutally affectionate hug and a call to arms for all the losers\, freaks\, and feral lost souls of the world.” – Steve Nash\, Saboteur Awards Performer of the Year

SUMMARY:Call And Response Performance
DESCRIPTION:In August 2016 artist Najia Bagi began a project where she received weekly letters from three people\, connecting her to the transition that each person was experiencing as a single person who was looking for love. On 3rd March 2017 Najia then performed at HOME with the Sacred Sounds Women’s Choir and Ruby Ann Patterson to bring these letters to life. We invite you to join Najia for a chance to read these letters\, and reply in your own words. Najia will also perform readings of the letters she received\, and will present snippets of music from the project so far. \nCall and Response is part of the Move Me project which is funded by Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts\, and supported by HOME and Manchester Jazz Festival. \nNo need to book\, all welcome
