SUMMARY:Women's Community Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:International Women’s Day (IWD) is returning to Manchester as a celebration of women’s empowerment\, equality and contributions to the city at Manchester Central Library on Saturday 8 March. \nLed and inspired by an already significant history of pioneering women\, IWD 2025 is a chance for women across all generations and dedicated allies to come together in advancing women’s rights in Manchester and around the world. \nThe theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Accelerate Action’\, which calls on supporters of gender equality to act against systemic barriers women from all backgrounds face in their personal and professional environments. \nIn recent years\, Manchester City Council has marked IWD with a dedicated ‘Walk for Women’ event. This year\, however\, the Council has joined forces with a diverse range of women-led community organisations to co-design a different approach. \nFunding was made available for community organisations to host IWD events across the city through the annual IWD grants programme. A celebratory community-led programme of workshops\, performances and discussions has also been planned for the day itself at Manchester Central Library based around the acronym HER: Heal Encourage\, Revive. \nThe events for IWD 2025 are: \nHeal – Performance Space   \n·  Flourish Together; Mindfulness Activity for relaxation and meditation\, 11am-1pm \n·  Equal Education Chances; letter writing and positive affirmations session\, 11:20am-12:15pm \nEncouraged – Performance Space 2 and 3   \n·    Community Thriving Together; sharing personal stories and overcoming challenges\, 11am-11:50am \n·   Trailblazers;  Creating bookmarks and stitching \n·   Young Identity with Shirley May; poetry performance by Young Identity members\, 11:55am-12:15pm \n·   Flourish Together; a 30-minute fireside chat chaired by Nickala Torkington about women changemakers\, 12:20pm-12:50pm. \nRevived – Performance Space 2 and 3   \n·     Bollyfit; an exercise class inspired by multicultural dance\, 1pm-1:30pm \n·     Councillor Ermina Bell will give a closing speech about the event\, 1:35pm-1:45pm \n·      DJ set to inspire and uplift \nGlass Room/Sensory Space   \n·     Flourish Together; Bookable pop-up spa for treatments for 20 mins including Indian Head Massage in a clothed and seated setting\, 11am-2pm \nThe events on the day will be accompanied by partner stalls of specialist community organisations including Manchester Action on Street Health (MASH)\, Manchester Rape Crisis\, Fikawele African and Caribbean Mental Health\, Walksafe  and Ahmed Iqbal Ullah (AIU) RACE Centre who will be on hand to raise awareness and promote their services. \nCouncillor Erinma Bell\, Lead Member for Women\, said: “Manchester has long been a city that has championed and supported women in the fight for gender equality.    \n“It’s fantastic to see the range of creativity and innovation in the events this year for International Women’s Day with the aim of accelerating further action for women to thrive personally and professionally. “I would encourage women from all backgrounds and generations to get involved\, because there is something for everyone and to advocate for more allies join in on the celebrations and inform our priorities for advancing women’s equality this year.”   \nFor more information or to book your place visit Women’s Community Festival.

DESCRIPTION:We will be joined by two very different local artists for some short musical performances. One is a young acoustic guitar student working toward grade exams\, who will give her first live performance ever. The other is an experienced composer of experimental rock/pop music\, an enthusiastic live performer and a library regular: \nSteve Manning aka Jupiter Canal System\, or JCS for short\, is a songwriter who lives in the heart of Cheshire. His craft is heavily influenced by his love of the New Wave era of the late 70s and early 80s\, often paying homage to the aggression of The Jam\, the controversy of The Stranglers and the wit of XTC. Despite trying to sonically replicate the genre\, Steve does try and remain original with his song writing\, especially lyrically and melodically. He is currently working on his 5th album and today he will be singing along to backing tracks which he has recorded and produced himself. \nFree – please drop in

DESCRIPTION:Musick in Manchester 1744/45 recreates the first ever public concert series known to have been given in Manchester\, prefiguring the remarkable musical tradition that accompanied Manchester’s development into one of Europe’s leading industrial cities. Remarkable\, and until now underrepresented\, the series includes sixteen concert programmes\, which survive in a literary transcript by John Harland written a century later in 1844. Through research by Dr Pauline Nobes\, many works can be identified directly\, but we also utilise Manchester’s archives\, most notably the extraordinary collection of Cardinal Ottoboni\, housed at Manchester’s Henry Watson Library\, bringing to light a significant amount of neglected music. Join us for the third concert in our series\, which recreates the original concert first performed on 9th July 1745. \nPauline Nobes\, is recognised as one of Europe’s foremost Baroque vioiniists and specialists in historical performance practice. SUMMARY:North West Mixtape
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this closing event ‘North West Mixtape’ in which selections of archive audio from the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project are celebrated. We’ve spent the last three years digitising\, cataloguing and clearing the rights for over 4000 recordings from archives across the North West region. This event pairs an audio-visual showreel of key recordings preserved during the project with live performances from two local artists. Gary Fisher and Freda Wallace will use and rework archive extracts from Kirkby Local History Society and Women Cotton Mill Workers recordings (respectively) to form new\, live pieces of sound art. Gary Fisher is a sound artist and experimental composer whose work explores sound through processes of inquiry and experimentation with objects\, actions\, words\, places\, and technologies. SUMMARY:International Women's Day: Songbird
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the oculus area on the ground floor for this short concert by the RNCM Chamber Choir\, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Inspired by birdsong\, ‘Songbird’  is an all female composer programme. The programme will include works by Fanny Mendelssohn\, Sarah Quartel and Roxanna Panufnik. \nThe RNCM Chamber Choir is an auditioned ensemble of 24 voices and is open to students of all Schools of Study. The Chamber Choir regularly participates in projects with the Hallé\, recently as the semi-chorus in Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet and alongside the chorus in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. They also have a close relationship with the Edvard Grieg Kor\, a professional vocal ensemble based in Bergen\, Norway. In 2019 the Chamber Choir travelled to Bergen to perform Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms with the EGK and Bergen Philharmonic under the baton of Thierry Fischer. The choir benefits from the involvement of David Hill\, the RNCM’s International Chair in Choral Conducting\, who visits several times a year\, and Stuart Overington\, who directs the ensembles. \nFree- please drop in

DESCRIPTION:In ‘All You Need Is Dynamite: Acid\, the Angry Brigade\, and the End of the Sixties’ – the latest in his Art Decades series of small format books – Dave Haslam explores the fading of Sixties dreams of peace and love\, and the emergence of urban terrorist groups\, particularly the Angry Brigade who carried out dozens of bomb attacks in Britain. Haslam tracks the political campaigns\, the police repression\, and Angry Brigade links to Manchester and the city’s underground paper ‘Mole Express’ (a bible for local acid-freaks\, and fans of the Weather Underground and the Edgar Broughton Band); he uncovers a heady mix of left-wing politics\, psychedelic music\, police raids and political violence. \nAt this launch event Dave Haslam will be discussing this new book\, and welcoming special guest Bruce Mitchell; a renowned musician who played regularly at venues including Roger Eagle’s club the Magic Village (1968-1970). Copies of the book will for sale; a book signing will conclude the event. \nThe event will also mark the launch the Manchester Digital Music Archive online exhibition of back issues of ‘Mole Express’. \nAlthough Covid regulations have been relaxed\, we have cut the capacity of the venue by 40% to allow more social distancing\, and we would ask attendees to wear a mask at least on arrival at the Library. \nTickets are £6 (£3 concessions for unwaged\, low-waged and NHS staff) \n \n
