SUMMARY:Mystery International Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:This event is for individuals aged 15 and over. \nWelcome to the voting page for the fifth edition of Manchester Central Library’s International Film Club’s Mystery Screening series. \nEvent Details: \nMonday 16th June.\n• Doors open: 17:00\n• Introduction to the film: 17:30\n• Film starts: 17:40 \n• Entry: Pay what you can (recommended donation of £3)\n• Popcorn: FREE!\n• Drinks: Grab a coffee\, tea\, or soft drink from the fully stocked café! \nAt the Film Society\, we aim to bring you the very best of global cinema— hoping to shine a light on underseen gems from around the world —enriching our collective film knowledge and experience\, while also having a corker of a time. To make it even more exciting\, each month you’ll have the chance to vote on 5 fantastic films\, and the one with the most votes will be screened with the winner being revealed the day of the event. \nThis month’s contenders are: \nBlack Orpheus (1959\, Brazil/France) \n \nA reimagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice transposed to Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval. Orfeu\, a trolley conductor\, falls in love with Eurydice\, a country girl fleeing danger. With an influential bossa nova soundtrack by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá\, it remains a significant cultural bridge\, introducing global audiences to the allure of Brazilian music and cinema. \nTumbbad (2018\, India) \n \nRahi Anil Barve’s early 20th century set folk horror follows Vinayak Rao’s quest for a hidden treasure in the cursed village of Tumbbad\, a quest that turns into a dark fairytale about greed and power. Known extensive use of practical effects and animatronics. From conception to release it took 21 years for Barve’s film to see the light of day\, a real labour of love. \nThe Cremator (1969\, Czech Republic) \n \nThis dark comedy film – and I do mean dark – tinged with gothic horror follows Karel Kopfrkingl\, a crematorium worker in 1930s Prague\, who descends into madness influenced by encroaching fascist ideology and Tibetan Buddhism in a film that slyly comments on the slippery slope into totalitarianism and the transformation of the average person into somebody complicit in evil. The film is celebrated for its surreal style and chilling portrayal of Kopfrkingl’s transformation into a murderer. \nThe Housemaid (1960\, South Korea) \n \nDirected by Kim Ki-young\, this domestic horror film tells the story of an upper-middle-class family whose lives are upended by a predatory housemaid. The film is a classic of Korean cinema\, known for its intense psychological drama and social commentary. Influential and well-known in South Korea\, being remade several times and often expanded and riffed on. \nElectra\, My Love (1974\, Hungary) \n \nQuite unlike anything else you’re likely to have seen\, this film reinterprets the Greek myth of Electra in a mythical world where a tyrant faces rebellion. Known for its extremely long complex takes\, with just twelve shots in its 70 minute run time\, the film explores themes of revolution and renewal – all while being one of the most visually stunning films to ever see the light of day. \nvote for your favourite here

SUMMARY:Dark Blue World - Czech Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:80 Years of VE Day: Czechoslovak RAF Pilots on Screen and in Real Life. \nimage credit: photo © Biograf Jan Svěrák \nPlease join us for a film screening of Dark Blue World\, a 2001 film by Czech director Jan Svěrák\, the Academy Award-winning director of Kolya\, about Czech pilots who fought for the British Royal Air Force during the Second World War. The film screening will be followed by an informal talk with Jitka Režná\, daughter of General František Fajtl\, one of the Czech RAF pilots who fought in WW2 and inspired creators of the film. Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Manchester and Czech School and Community Manchester have put together the event to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. \nReuniting the creative team responsible for Kolya\, 1996 Oscar® winner for Best Foreign Film\, under Czech director Jan Sverak\, Dark Blue World tells the story of the friendship between two Czech pilots\, the veteran Franta (Ondrej Vetchý) and fresh-faced young trainee Karel (Krystof Hádek). They escape Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia\, make their way to Britain and join the Royal Air Force. When Karel’s plane is hit and he bails out in the countryside\, he is taken in by Susan (Tara Fitzgerald)\, an Englishwoman whose husband is missing in action. In a moment of weakness\, she makes love to Karel\, relieving him of his virginity. But later\, when Karel takes Franta to meet his “new love\,” Franta and Susan are attracted to each other\, leading to a situation that will put the two men’s friendship to the ultimate test. \nLanguage: Czech with English subtitles. SUMMARY:Mystery International Film Night
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the voting page for the third edition of Manchester Central Library’s International Film Club’s Mystery Screening series. \nEvent Details: Monday 14 April 2025\n• Doors open: 17:00\n• Introduction to the film: 17:30\n• Film starts: 17:40 \n• Entry: Pay what you can (recommended donation of £3)\n• Popcorn: FREE!\n• Drinks: Grab a coffee\, tea\, or soft drink from the fully stocked café! \nFor the first two events the crowds voted on films from Hong Kong and Japan\, so today we’re moving away from Asia for a little while and focussing on some often-underexplored movie cultures. \nThis month’s contenders are: \nThe Milk of Sorrow \n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Claudia Llosa\, Peru \nA moving psychological study through the lens of traditional Latin American magical realism. Based around the Peruvian belief that trauma can be passed from mother to daughter through the breast milk of the mother\, the film examines the devastating impact of the atrocities committed during the Peruvian internal conflict on the psyche of the nation. While obviously speaking directly to the Peruvian identity\, there is a broader understanding of the hardships of womanhood on a global level. \nIxcanul \n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Jayro Bustamante\, Guatemala \nA beautiful film that gives a voice to Kaqchikel people and stories – the first in history to do so – employing far more conscientious efforts toward authenticity than most representations of indigenous groups in film. Maria\, a teenage girl\, dreams of leaving her village but is due to be in an arranged marriage with the local foreman – the film explores her various attempts to find purpose and freedom in a culture that is lost somewhere between Mayan and Christian traditions and where life seems just out of the periphery of opportunity. \nThe Cyclist \n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Mohsen Makhmalbaf\, Iran \nA Champion Cyclist\, strapped for cash and in need of a way to pay for his wife’s medical bills enters into a ridiculous spectacle challenge of a non-stop seven-day endurance cycle. With the spectacle a commercial scene rises up around the man and a microcosm of capitalist exploitation begins to form. The films simple premise is presented with the high tension of any great melodrama and the elements that build\, and build are delirious and frustrating with the film culminating in one of the most brazen endings to a film of all time. Intense\, tragic and genuinely edge of the seat. \nThe Damned Don’t Cry \n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Fyzal Boulifa\, Morocco \nDifferent societal oppressions conflict with and destroy individuals in this lyrical\, Sirkian story of humanity in both beauty and brutishness. The story revolves around Fatima-Zahra and her teenage son Selim\, who are constantly on the move to escape the scandals that follow them. When Selim uncovers the truth about their past\, Fatima-Zahra decides to start anew in Tangier. However\, their quest for legitimacy strains their volatile relationship\, pushing them to their limits and the limits of social conventions around them. \nEnamorada \n\n\n\n\n\nDir. Emilio Fernandez\, Mexico \nA triumphant classic of Mexican cinema. Enamorada is a romantic melodrama that manages not only to craft a beautiful film filled with passion and yearning but also addresses those same ideas of passion and yearning in the hearts of revolutionaries. Set during the Mexican Revolution\, General Reyes\, a rebel leader\, takes control of the conservative town of Cholula. While there\, he encounters Beatriz the strong-willed daughter of the town’s wealthiest man. Despite their initial clashes\, a romance develops between the two\, challenging their beliefs and transforming their lives. Expertly staged and performed\, a perfect example of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. \nCast your vote here\, tell everybody you know about the event and we really look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Lights\, Camera\, Pride! LGBTQ+ History Month Film Night
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month we’re hosting a film night where you get to decide the film we watch. The LGBTQIA+ Staff Network will be turning the Central Library Performance Space into the plaza for one night only\, complete with popcorn! \nMonday 3rd February 2025\nDoors open at 5pm. Film starts at 5:45pm on the dot. \nWe’ve shortlisted four films which celebrate our history\, culture and queerness. This is an opportunity to come together as a community\, meet colleagues and new friends in real life\, and have some fun. \n\n\n\n\nBut which film would you like to see? You can vote for your favourite here... \n\nYou can find out more details about the films and watch the trailers below.\n\nBut I’m a Cheerleader\n\n\n\nMegan (Natasha Lyonne) considers herself a typical American girl. She excels in school and cheerleading\, and she has a handsome football-playing boyfriend\, even though she isn’t that crazy about him. So she’s stunned when her parents decide she’s gay and send her to True Directions\, a boot camp meant to alter her sexual orientation. While there\, Megan meets a rebellious and unashamed teen lesbian\, Graham (Clea DuVall). Though Megan still feels confused\, she starts to have feelings for Graham. \n\n\n\n\n\nDisclosure \nThis documentary follows an in-depth look at Hollywood’s depiction of transgender people and the impact of their stories on transgender lives and American culture. Disclosure provides a direct conversation between transgender people and Hollywood by showcasing both sides of the conversation with direct examples in film history. \n\n\n\n\n\nDating Amber \nSet in 1990s Ireland\, Eddie (O’Shea) is desperate to hide that he is actually gay\, whereas everyone suspects that Amber (Petticrew) is\, and she does little to convince people that she isn’t. They decide to team up and pretend to be a couple to throw people off of the scent. \nAt first\, everything goes to plan\, and even school bully Kev (O’Reilly) stops harassing the pair\, but neither can hide their true nature for long\, especially when they stumble across a gay nightclub whilst walking the town one night. \n\n\n\n\n\nA Secret Love \nA former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player\, Terry Donahue\, and her partner\, Pat Henschel\, met in Canada in 1947. They later moved to Chicago and ran a successful interior decorating business until the late 1980s. They kept their lesbian relationship a secret from their families for almost seven decades. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur wonderful libraries team have also curated a selection of Queer books for you to browse in the cosy reading corner. We’ll also have a suggestion box for you to recommend other LGBTQ+ books you would like the library service to stock. \nFree – reserve a place by clicking on the ‘Book Now’ button below or here on eventbrite

SUMMARY:An Evening with Douglas Stuart
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Libraries and Manchester Literature Festival present an Evening with Booker Prize winning author Douglas Stuart.\nFollowing on from his debut event in Manchester last Spring\, Manchester Literature Festival is excited to welcome back best-selling author Douglas Stuart for an intimate evening at Central Library. Join us to hear Douglas discuss his literary and cultural influences from his favourite working class and Scottish writers to the LGBTQ+ artists that have inspired and influenced him. He’ll also share the challenges of adapting his Booker Prize-winning novel Shuggie Bain into an 8-part television drama for the BBC. \nOne of the boldest writers of his generation\, Douglas Stuart was born and raised in working class Glasgow. After graduating from the Royal College of Art\, he moved to New York\, where he began a career in textiles and fashion design. He spent a decade writing his debut novel while balancing the demands of his day job. Shuggie Bain was finally published in 2020 and went on to win both Debut of the Year and Book of the Year at the British Book Awards alongside the Booker Prize. In 2021 a mural inspired by Shuggie Bain was unveiled on the wall of the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. Created by the city’s Cobolt Collective\, it features Shuggie dancing in the street\, together with a quote from his mother Agnes: “You’ll not remember the city\, you were too wee\, but there’s dancing. All kinds of dancing.” \nDouglas’s second novel\, Young Mungo\, was published in April 2022 to critical acclaim. Set in 1990s Glasgow\, it explores two teenage boys’ quest for love and safety in a world of tension\, violence and toxic masculinity. Douglas’s short stories have appeared in The New Yorker and he is currently working on his third novel. He will be in conversation with award-winning Northern poet\, novelist and mentor Helen Mort. Helen’s latest books are The Illustrated Woman and A Line Above the Sky. \n“There are Agnes Bains\, Shuggies & Young Mungos – broken\, closeted\, bursting to break free – hidden in the fabric of Scotland still. Douglas Stuart’s work reminds us of their beauty\, and the value of their existence.” The Face \nDoors open at 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:Scrooged – Christmas Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Grimmfest annual Christmas movie gathering. This year’s choice is an eighties classic\, which pays off-kilter homage to tradition – Richard Donner’s cult classic\, Scrooged. It sees Dickens’ tale of miserliness and redemption relocated to 80s New York\, and Ebeneezer Scrooge magnificently re-imagined in the form of Bill Murray’s hard-nosed TV executive\, Frank Cross. \nWith a suitably scabrous and cynical screenplay by notorious Saturday Night Live and National Lampoon scribe\, Michael Donoghue and Dickens buff\, Mitch Glazer\, who would later go on to adapt Great Expectations for Alfonso Cuaron\, and boasting an all-star cast of cult luminaries\, including Robert Mitchum\, Carol Kane\, Karen Allen\, Bobcat Goldthwaite\, Michael J. Pollard\, John Glover\, and New York Dolls frontman David Johansen\, it’s a brash and black-hearted take on a heart-warming tale. \nPick up a free mince pie on arrival\, and make sure you check out the Grimmfest stall\, for discounted stocking fillers including DVDs\, movie posters and t-shirts – fantastic gifts for the horror movie fan in your life! \nDoors open: 5.30pm\nCertificate PG

SUMMARY:Speaking Out!
DESCRIPTION:Journalist Bob Dickinson introduces a selection from films made by the Workers Film Association\, formerly based in Lucy Street\, Hulme. \nThe film clips show the diversity of the WFA’s interests\, their commitment to the history of the Afro-Caribbean and South Asian communities\, their response to political events of the 1980s and 90s\, and the importance of several of their films as oral history. From Eddie Frow’s memories of The National Unemployed Workers Union and the Battle of Bexley Square in 1931\, to Viraj Mendis speaking from inside the church where he took refuge for two years during his fight to stop the government deporting him\, to Buzzcocks founder member\, the late great Pete Shelley\, describing why punk rock in Manchester was so different – discover why there is a wealth of people’s history to be seen and heard in what the WFA left behind. A discussion follows the films. Watch a trailer here

SUMMARY:Our Sam\, The Middleton Man
DESCRIPTION:Our Sam follows the story of a teenager\, Samantha (a secret poet)\, who travels around her home Town of Middleton observing and writing of the exclusion and voicelessness of the other young girls she sees. On her travels she learns of Samuel Bamford\, the radical\, reformer and writer who was born in Middleton in 1788. While reading Bamford’s books ‘Early Years’ and ‘Passages in the Life of a Radical’ Bamford appears to Samantha and through a series of discussions\, we learn about life in Middleton 200 years ago\, poverty\, hunger and riots brought on by the ‘Corn Laws’ and industrialisation\, the fight for representation of the Working Class in Parliament and the Peterloo Massacre. With Sam’s encouragement that ‘there’s strength in Unity lass” Samantha brings together the Towns teenagers to find a way they can represent themselves in a positive way to the adult World but Samantha\, like Bamford\, finds the road to reform a treacherous one. \nThe film screening will be followed by a Q&A \nFree – booking required \n \n

SUMMARY:Peterloo Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for relaxed screenings of the Peterloo Film every month from June – August. \nThe Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper. Written and directed by Mike Leigh\, Peterloo is an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the 1819 Peterloo Massacre\, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. Each month we’ll be screening Mike Leigh’s Peterloo to mark 200 years since this watershed moment. \nPay what you can – £3 / £5 / £8

But Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) wants Bianca\, so he uses sullen senior Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to attempt to win Kat’s heart. Will Patrick be able to win Kat over and will Cameron be able to have Bianca? This quintessential teen movie paved the way for a barrage of copy cat films that followed it. \nDoors: 5.30pm
