It’s time to go on a quest around Central Library! \nFind your house on a giant map in the Archives\, discover the tiniest insects on earth in the Performance Space and play hide and seek in the Reading Room. Look out for Leo Lost\, from a long line of losers\, Frankie Found\, from a fabulous family of finders\, and help Mr Quaver\, who is feeling low\, re-discover his musical mojo. There’ll be juggling\, hula-hooping and dressing up too\, not forgetting storytime\, crafting and a treasure hunt for you.

Featuring action\, excitement and comedy\, this show is sure to bring a little magic to any Harry Potter fan’s day. \nThe Sorting Hat Dare you be sorted by the Sorting Hat? Will you be a Hufflepuff\, or do you think that Slytherin is the right house for your skills? \nHagrid’s Magical Games join Hogwarts’ groundskeeper as he teaches pupils of all ages some of the tricks he’s learned but\, of course\, he’s strictly forbidden from performing magic outside Hogwarts! \nMagical Crafts and Activities including the chance to make your own house badge\, broomstick\, magic wand or golden snitch. DESCRIPTION:Manchester Central Library is proud to host a display inspired by the British Library’s new exhibition Harry Potter: A History of Magic. \nFrom Friday 20 October 2017\, visitors will be able to discover fascinating facts about the History of Magic at Manchester Central Library. Displays will launch simultaneously in 20 public libraries across the UK in tandem with the Harry Potter: A History of Magic exhibition at the British Library in London. \nThe series of displays across the UK will include specially designed panels which are inspired by Harry Potter: A History of Magic\, showing images of rare books\, manuscripts and magical objects featured in the British Library’s exhibition\, as well as images of material from J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury’s own collections. Manchester Central Library’s local connections to magic and folklore will also be showcased\, and will include unique items from our Special and Archive Collections.  We will also be hosting a series of events including live screenings from the British Library\, a chance to handle some of our rarest and oldest books and a special Sunday opening. \nHarry Potter: A History of Magic celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone\, combining centuries-old British Library treasures with original material from Bloomsbury’s and J.K. Rowling’s own archives. Based on the subjects studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry\, this exhibition will showcase material from J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury’s own collections\, going on display for the very first time.

SUMMARY:Central Library in LEGO
DESCRIPTION:Pop in and see this wonderful LEGO model of Central Library\, which was built by Robert Clarkson for ‘Bricktastic’ at Manchester Convention Centre in 2015.  It has been shown around the country and is here now\, ‘inside itself’\, in the Central Library Search Room\, for a limited time only! \nRobert says: ‘My hobby is creating new and unique models out of LEGO.  As I enjoy making buildings\, Manchester Central Library was an ideal choice\, especially as it is such a distinctive local landmark.  Its architecture\, style and design were just itching to be portrayed in LEGO.  I gathered what plans and details I could about the building\, including visits to take photographs and walk around the building to study it. Getting the perspective\, scale and features right are very important. \nAfter spending some time creating designs on paper and my laptop it took me around six weeks to build\, say 300 hours.  Being a member of recognised LEGO User Group\, Northern Brickworks\, helped me in acquiring the necessary bricks and elements I needed.  Now completed\, the model measures half a metre in height\, three quarters of a metre wide.  With the portico at the front this adds another quarter of a metre.  I know for certain that it contains over 21\,000 elements\, as I counted them myself when building it!’ \nFree – please drop in (see times – opposite)

DESCRIPTION:Calling all Witches\, Wizards and Muggles! \nIt’s time to sign up to our spellbinding school of sorcery as you take a wacky and wonderful whistle stop tour of the Wizard Academy and learn to become an expert in mystery and magic.\nDuring this interactive experience you’ll take lessons in the basics of broomsticks\, practice your potion making\, be instructed in incantations and learn to tattle and talk with a tawny owl. \nA magical challenge for students aged 5 and over. Each participant is provided with an Adventure Booklet to complete as they travel around the rooms and corridors of Central Library meeting the Professors along the way. \nThis is a free drop in event for the whole family\, no need to book. \nPlease note: The Professors will be running workshops from 3pm until 6.30pm. To complete all four workshops you need at least an hour\, so the final Academy enrolment will be at 5.30pm.
