SUMMARY:The Streets of Our City: Manchester Town Hall Photographers' Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Town Hall Photographers’ Collection is a large photographic collection held in Archives+ Central Library\, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007. The collection consists of tens of thousands of images\, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly\, Manchester City Council. The photographs were taken by staff photographers\, who were tasked to document the work of the Corporation/Council departments and in doing so\, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history\, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape. The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives\, to slides\, prints\, CDs and even a couple of cine films. What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people. A team of dedicated staff\, volunteers and students from Bridge College\, Loreto College\, Manchester College and Pure Innovations are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection. DESCRIPTION:In The City is a collection of Manchester images taken by photographer Richard Davis over the last 35 Years. The exhibition centres around Richard’s love of art\, music\, culture and football. From the heady days of Madchester\, right through to the dynamism of the present day\, the excitement and diversity of city life helping to inspire and motivate his work. Hulme plays a major role throughout the exhibtion; it’s where Richard set up a studio and darkroom in his Charles Barry Crescent flat during the late 1980’s. The area became a rich source of creativity and a backdrop for many of his photographs. The exhibition also highlights the many books\, records and films that influenced his approach to photography. \nAbout Richard Davis…Richard Davis (born 1965) is a British\, social documentary and portrait photographer\, based in North West England. His work has been promoted and exhibited by the British Culture Archive and renowned photography publishers\, Café Royal Books. SUMMARY:Manchester Loving Earth Project - Textile Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of over 70 Loving Earth Project textile panels will be at six city centre venues in Manchester. Central Library is one of these venues and has 10 panels on display. \nEach panel is individually crafted and depicts places\, creatures and other things that the maker loves\, but which are threatened by growing climate crisis and destruction. \nMore than 200 panels were displayed at COP26 in Glasgow and this Manchester exhibition will take place during COP27 in Egypt. SUMMARY:Who Built Wythenshawe? The Forgotten Story of Ernest & Shena Simon
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition traces the story of Wythenshawe during the twentieth century. From a humble collection of small villages\, Wythenshawe was developed as a garden city to re-house the tens of thousands of families previously forced to live in Manchester’s inner-city slums in well-built and spacious neighbourhoods amidst green surroundings. Alongside illustrating Wythenshawe’s history\, the exhibition tells the captivating lives of Ernest and Shena Simon who played a critical role in Wythenshawe’s development. The Wythenshawe we see today would not have existed without the great energy and inspiring altruism of the Simons. They paved the way for the creation of Wythenshawe in 1926 by purchasing and donating Wythenshawe Hall and its surrounding parkland for the people of Manchester. Yet their role in pushing for a garden city\, their wider work in improving the social conditions of working people across Manchester and their fascinating personal lives\, are largely forgotten. There is little in the way of memorials to the Simons\, but their legacy runs deep\, as we hope this exhibition will reveal. SUMMARY:Documenting Demolition: A Community Evidencing Project of Manchester’s LGBT+ Centre
DESCRIPTION:The LGBT+ Centre (previously known as The Gay Centre) is located on Sidney Street\, off Oxford Road and is the longest continuously running LGBT+ Community Centre in the UK.  ‘Documenting Demolition’ is a photographic exhibition of the Centre’s final months before the groups moved out and the building was demolished to make way for a brand new LGBT+ Centre\, now known as The Proud Place. The photos record the various user groups\, staff and volunteers\, as well as some of the building’s quirky details. These will be displayed alongside some original ‘love letters’ written to the old Centre from its ‘lovers’. \nThe project is part of a longer-term design and research project into Manchester’s LGBT+ Centre building undertaken by Emily Crompton\, an architect and academic at Manchester School of Architecture. SUMMARY:The Darker Side of Pink
DESCRIPTION:A Breast Cancer Awareness Exhibition Tour \nPatient advocacy group METUPUK\, is hosting a pop-up exhibition throughout the venue to highlight the need to improve care and research around secondary (metastatic) breast cancer. The exhibition aims to highlight the seriousness of Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) the biggest killer of women under the age of 50 here in the UK – via a powerful display that counteracts other ‘fluffier’\, baby pink-branded campaigns. The campaign ‘The Darker Side of Pink’ is a physical interactive mobile and online experience. The Darker Side of Pink features 31 transparent figures\, to depict the invisibility of the disease – one for each woman who dies every day from Metastatic Breast Cancer. Each figure contains a QR code that plays a video from a real-life woman living with secondary breast cancer\, explaining the struggles and issues they face. Filmed only last year\, some of these brave women unfortunately have died from the disease\, becoming a statistic they spoke about whilst also campaigning for change\, to benefit others. Many of these videos are incredibly emotional\, as befits the seriousness of the topic. \nMETUPUK is a self-funded charity and the only patient advocacy group in the UK focussing on secondary (metastatic) breast cancer. Founder Jo Taylor created the group in 2016 to campaign and promote the issues affecting those diagnosed\, highlighting the red flag signs and symptoms\, access to drugs\, treatments\, and clinical trials. The volunteer-led organisation works to push and promote issues affecting those with a particular focus on tackling the backlog of care for patients as well as awareness of this invisible disease. \nFACT: 31 women die every single day of Metastatic Breast Cancer. \nFree – please drop in

DESCRIPTION:Foundation Art and Design Students from The Manchester College have brought the Art School’s ethos of research to the iconic circular reading room with a series of stunning works. DESCRIPTION:The Polish Heritage Days is an annual festival organised and run under the patronage of the Polish Embassy in London. The idea behind Polish Heritage Days is to promote and celebrate Polish culture\, heritage of past generations\, and Polish contribution to the cultural\, economic\, and social life of the United Kingdom. \n\n\nTogether with the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Manchester\, Polish Centre Wilno Manchester and Artists from Silesian University Art Institute we’re bringing a Polish Poster Exhibition to the Central Library in Manchester. We expect the news to speak truth to power\, but can it ever really be objective? Is your news the same as everyone else’s? How do you use the news to navigate the world around you? \nCentral Library will be hosting a series of pop-up handling sessions tied in with the new Breaking the News Exhibition at the British Library.The sessions will be looking at how major local\, regional and international events have been reported using the original newspapers and magazines from the time. Come and see how the major events of the last 200 years were reported. \nHow did local and national newspapers reflect the two World Wars and the struggle for Women’s Rights. \nHow did the Manchester Evening News report significant local events from the Munich Air Crash to the Manchester Blitz. \nHow does a newspaper’s own perspective (Socialist Worker\, Gay Times\, Private Eye affect the way it reports on the world). \nThe display runs from February 24th until August 21th 2022 and alongside the display panels we will be running regular weekly handling sessions. SUMMARY:Art of Oesophageal Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Art of oesophageal cancer is a visual representation of one patient’s experience of going through treatment\, surgery and then coming to terms with a new normal. \nThe subject matter touches on wider public health issues and covers the pre-cancer condition Barrett’s oesophagus\, as well as the artist’s experience of chemotherapy\, surgery and post-operative period in a High Dependency Unit.  Although the images refer to oesophageal cancer\, several can relate to any cancer or life changing illness or experience. The more recent pieces\, including two short\, illustrated poems\, point to personal issues that require management despite an otherwise good level of health. \nManchester-born artist\, Ann Wood\, first started to draw to pass the time during long chemotherapy sessions. She is self-taught and like many\, enjoys using art to express feelings on scenarios and life in general. The images in this exhibition are mainly figurative art using the portable media of pencils and fine liners. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer and how it can be treated if caught in its early stages. The exhibition coincides with Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month in February and the artist will also be running a virtual exhibition on Instagram to mark this month. Scenes of our city\, as seen through the eyes of artist Terry Williams\, whose haunting pictures taken on disposable cameras during lockdown are one of many highlights of the show. DESCRIPTION:The OUTing the Past International Festival of LGBT+ History (est. Manchester in 2005) has teamed up with the Museum of Free Derry to create the first retrospective showcase of NI Queer Activism. A rare insight into the previously unacknowledged tenacious heroism of queer activism in Northern Ireland before\, during and following “The Troubles”. The project was greatly enriched by the support of several archival collections and regional LGBT+ groups and queer veterans. \nThe Queering the North Exhibition aims to bring to a wider a public an expansive and nuanced reading of the history of the LGBT+ community in the North of Ireland/Northern Ireland. It brings together archives and recollections from a range of key activists within a scaffolding provided by academic research. The exhibition includes an expansive chronology of key events\, commencing with the deliberate exclusion of NI from the decriminalising legislation offered by the 1967 Sexual Offences Act through to the introduction of Equal Marriage to NI (January 2020). \nMuseum of Derry Curator Adrian Kerr described the exhibition as a natural step for his institution: “This is a part of our collective past that has been kept hidden\, and this is reflected in the nature of the information available for the exhibition. It is the hope of all involved that this will act as a provocative spur towards the creation of the first comprehensive reading of our LGBT+ history.” \nThe Mayor of Derry City\, Cllr Michaela Boyle: “I had the great pleasure of hosting a reception in the Guildhall for the Exhibition Launch. DESCRIPTION:Behind Closed Doors is a photographic exhibition featuring life within an Intensive Care Unit at the height of the pandemic. DESCRIPTION:Kemang Wa Lehulere collaborates with 11 Manchester writers and over 100 residents of the city to create a surprising collection of love letters – a new book for Central Library \nSouth African artist Kemang Wa Lehulere spent MIF19 in residence in Manchester’s network of libraries – and two years on\, we’re now presenting I Love You Too\, a multifaceted artwork inspired by the time he spent in the city. \nAt the start of 2021\, Wa Lehulere invited more than 100 people from across Manchester to share with us their love stories: to people\, to places\, even to possessions. Through a series of online and in-person meetings\, a group of 11 Manchester writers put their words on to the page. The result is I Love You Too\, a powerful and personal book of love letters rooted in our city – and the first in an international series. \nThe book will be published at MIF21 (details to be announced) and will become a permanent part of Manchester Libraries’ collection. DESCRIPTION:Spotlighting the impact of the genre on the region’s community with a free exhibition of Hip Hop memorabilia and materials from the 1980s to present day\, marking over 40 years of Hip Hop lifestyle and culture in the city. \nMade up of clothing\, photographs\, cassettes\, records\, graffiti sketchbooks\, posters\, flyers and oral histories documenting the historical journey and growth of the youth movement\, the exhibition digs deep into sub genres and time-lining the scene changes\, weaving the rich tapestry of Manchester’s underground story the project tells a story; of a disillusioned yet resolute youth that strived for something beyond the grey skies and gloom of post-industrial decline and the economic depression of the early 1980’s. \nThe unique collection is quickly growing to showcase Manchester’s position in the history of UK Hip Hop – from the early days of pioneer breakdance crew’s\, Broken Glass & Street Machine\, dancing to the sounds of electro funk and breaks from the boom boxes or import record store\, ‘Spin Inn’ Top 10’ weekly feature on Stu Allen’s seminal Hip Hop radio show on Piccadilly 261. From inception and til this day\, Manchester’s home-grown talent and its new wave of shining stars remain at the forefront of UK Rap. Artists such as Aitch\, Bugzy Malone and Children of Zeus are firmly carrying the torch that was once lit by the youth of the 80s in parks and city clubs such as\, Legends and The Bistro. SUMMARY:Reds & K 1000 - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Reds’ Andrew Redmond met documentary photographer Karin Albinsson after completing a prison sentence. When ‘Reds’ told Karin of the 1\,000 photos he had taken and lost six years ago\, this project was born. During the last couple of years\, they have met up regularly to retake the photos lost. Reds has spent most of his life in and out of institutions. During the project he has rebuilt his life.
