SUMMARY:World War I's Hidden Voices
DESCRIPTION:India\, Africa\, the West Indies and recruitment through culture explored in two parallel exhibitions: \nFrom the Shadows of War and Empire \nA documentary exhibition by Southern Voices \nFew know about how European powers brought colonies into World War I\, took resources from these countries and took the war to ‘fronts’ outside Europe.  An exhibition which finally tells this major part of the story from the colonies’ point of view.  We focus on India\, the West Indies\, German and British East Africa\, and Nigeria – the British Colonies. \n  \nTHE POPPY RETAKE (v3) \nA video art installation by Kooj Chuhan \nModern war propaganda began with World War I which obscured its pointlessness and deep colonial connections\, while pretending to be the ‘war to end all wars’.  This artwork explores coercion into war\, involving an African woman working for a war-themed park.  She finds herself caught between colonial narratives\, spirits from the dead and video war games. \n

SUMMARY:Portrait Youth Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Metropolitan University’s Manchester Fashion Institute is involved in an exciting new project that explores the individual and civic identities of Greater Manchester’s young people through style\, fashion and dress. \nAcademics Jo Jenkinson\, John Earnshaw and Zoë Hitchen have been working with young people to establish how clothing can be used as a catalyst for self-awareness and personal expression\, capturing portraits of each participants’ identity. \nPhotographs from the Portrait Youth project will on display at an exhibition at Manchester Central Library\, opening on Monday 9th October\, as part of the Design Manchester DM17 festival. \nThe exhibition features portraits of 14 members of the Manchester Youth Council (MYC) who attended interactive workshops hosted by the University in February. MYC were the first group to be photographed for the project. Participants were asked to style themselves using their own clothing or artefacts in a way that represented their identities and to reflect upon\, and articulate\, their current\, past and future selves. \nSupported by Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

SUMMARY:Shirley Baker: Airport '87
DESCRIPTION:A poignant look back at at Manchester Airport as seen through the lens of acclaimed photographer Shirley Baker\, thirty years ago\, having spent a day at the airport in 1987 capturing the experiences of passengers using the airport. The exhibition includes photos chosen by the public and Manchester Airport staff.  As well as capturing various areas of the airport\, Baker’s photographs also show how people passed the time before a flight by playing cards and board games – a far cry from smart phones\, tablets and kindles!  The style of passengers is also brought into focus with big hair and plenty of shell suits on show. \nBorn in Salford\, Baker was famed for her street photography of working class inner-city areas. The photos of Manchester Airport were discovered in the archives at Central Library. They explore work created after Shirley Baker was approached by the Documentary Photography Archive (DPA)\, who were seeking to commission photographers to grow their collection of contemporary work. \nIt marks three decades since the photos were taken and visitors will also get to see what the next 30 years at Manchester Airport will look like.The airport’s famous chandeliers that used to hang in Terminal 1 also make an appearance\, along with people smoking indoors and purchasing Cinzano in duty free! \nThe exhibition comes as the airport is embarking on its £1bn investment programme that will transform the passenger experience.  As part of the exhibition a number of old photos have been blended with CGIs of how the new terminal building will look in its place.  Visitors will also be able to find out more about the developments that will see Terminal 2 more than double in size. \nAll the images are held by the Archives+ Centre at Central Library and the full commission can be viewed at www.flickr.com/gp/manchesterarchiveplus/n964Z4 \nThis exhibition is kindly supported by Manchester Airport

SUMMARY:Shared History\, Shared Future: 70 Years of UK and Pakistan Relations
DESCRIPTION:2017 is a landmark year for Pakistan\, the nation turned 70 and the British High Commission marked this anniversary by showcasing important milestones\, human stories\, and the bonds which exist between the UK and Pakistan. The UK and Pakistan share a past and are striving together to pave the way for a shared future as well. The British High Commission commissioned photojournalist Sara Farid for a month to go on a journey across Pakistan taking pictures which fall under this campaign. This exhibition contains her work along with the winning photograph\, runner up and a few more from the 70thAnniversary Photo Competition which ran nationwide in Pakistan. \nPlease note: this is a digital format exhibition; the phsyical format is at Longsight Library until 6 January 2018

SUMMARY:Deities at the Bottom of the Garden
DESCRIPTION:In this fascinating exhibition\, artist Richard Bartle explores in minute detail the customs and icons of major world religions and belief systems. Manifested in a series of 12 scale modelled garden sheds\, the work reduces the usually grand architecture of churches and temples into more private spaces of worship. Viewers are invited to make their own minds up about the question of what it is to have faith\, and the differences and similarities between differing belief systems. \nEach sculpture has been extensively researched by Richard through visiting places of worship and talking to people from the communities that use them\, as well as researching religious\, documentary and historical texts. Each shed and its interior has been painstakingly hand crafted\, wherever possible staying true to materials and respecting the sacred and ideological value of the objects and images appropriate to that belief. The work explores the ideas of dedication and obsession\, a global perspective of religion and politics\, and our relationship with physical objects and architecture. \nRichard Bartle is a Sheffield based artist who has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. He has many works in both private and public collections. DESCRIPTION:This special exhibition features work from artists taking part in creative workshops at the Booth Centre\, which aims to bring about positive change in the lives of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness\, and help them plan for and realise a better future. \nThe Booth Centre runs creative workshops every day for people who visit the centre with experience of homelessness. The well loved author of classic picture books including Shark in the Park\, and illustrator of books by authors including Jacqueline Wilson is celebrated in this interactive and action packed exhibition. \nNick says: \n‘I’d like to invite you to this exhibition which is all about me and my work. There’s a lot to find out and plenty to do. You’ll see how I drew when I was younger and discover how I became an illustrator. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is based on a project that brought together young dancers and actors from Manchester and the North West in an exciting exploration of historical Manchester. By using archive photographs\, artefacts and music as far back as the 1800s and merging them with modern photography\, it allows audiences to experience a new outlook on Manchester’s past and present. \nThe process began by gathering the most interesting and thought provoking images in the archive collection. It was important to capture the diversity of Manchester and to recognise its industrial roots. Through the timeline of archives\, what stood out the most was how well images and sounds were able to capture a general sentiment and mood of that period: whether that was the melancholic industrial environment; the strong community settings at Hulme Carnival or the vibrant summer months in Piccadilly Gardens. \nOnce images were collected\, they became a stimulus for the movement and emotion of the dancers. Characters and certain personas formed by imitating the expressions on the people’s faces in the images. Actors listened to sound archives and their responses were filmed. Mood and feelings of certain images were embodied through shape and movement. \nUsing editing software the modern photos were merged with the original archives\, resulting in this exhibition. A map of Manchester in the exhibition shows the forever expanding history of arts in the city. \nArchivesMoved was supported by Archives+ and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund
