DESCRIPTION:SMCC welcomes everyone to visit Manchester Central library to view a wide selection of members’ images. Pictures have been captured across a wide section of our members representing their individual skill\, technique and style. \nSMCC is an active\, friendly and progressive photography club offering a wide range of speakers\, outings and events. \nThe Club was formed in June 1952 by a group of friends in Didsbury\, led by Fred Veal FRPS\, FRSA\, the Club’s first President. The aim of the Club was to encourage “good friendship through photography” which is now the Club’s motto. \nThe club has a mentoring scheme for Club members by setting up small interest groups. These groups are each led by a couple of experienced leaders and cover Landscape\, People\, Urban/Street\, Macro Photography\, Astro Photography and a Basic Skills group. \nEach group arranges its own practical outings and review sessions\, where images are shared within the groups and constructive and supportive critique is given to help members improve their photography. SUMMARY:Ukraine Today Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This documentary photography exhibition presents the work of Ukrainian photographer Olena Melnykova\, a member of the volunteer team Auto Angel Lviv\, who regularly takes part in humanitarian missions to eastern Ukraine. Travelling alongside volunteers\, she documents the lives of local people\, the work of the team\, and the everyday reality of war. These photographs are not only about destruction\, but also about responsibility\, resilience\, mutual support\, and the quiet determination of those who continue to defend Ukraine. This is not a story of the past. This is Ukraine today. \nAuto Angel Lviv is a Ukrainian charitable organisation that delivers humanitarian aid and vehicles to Ukraine’s defenders\, recovers damaged vehicles from frontline areas\, repairs them\, and returns them to service. Another key part of its work is providing frontline evacuation teams with essential equipment used in the rescue of wounded soldiers. This exhibition supports a fundraising campaign to provide trauma backpacks—essential medical kits used by frontline evacuation teams to deliver life-saving care to wounded soldiers. In addition\, Auto Angel Lviv continuously funds vehicle repairs\, replacement parts\, fuel\, and the recovery and return of repaired vehicles to the front line. Every photograph tells a real story. DESCRIPTION:Explore bold and beautiful material from Queer Up North 1992–2002. Established in 1992 by Tanja Farman and Gavin Barlow as part of the original Manchester Festival\, Queer Up North quickly became a beacon for queer culture\, drawing artists and audiences from across the globe. Over its first decade\, the festival showcased groundbreaking performances and played a pivotal role in shaping Manchester’s identity as an inclusive and vibrant LGBTQIA+ city. \nIn late 2024\, Queer Up North 1992–2002: Celebrating Manchester’s LGBTQIA+ Heritage was awarded funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, with additional support from The Granada Foundation. This funding marked a significant milestone in preserving Manchester’s rich LGBTQIA+ heritage\, focusing on the Queer Up North festivals held between 1992 and 2002. \nAll items on display\, unless otherwise stated\, are drawn from the Queer Up North collection held at Manchester Central Library. DESCRIPTION:UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students from The Manchester College have developed a personal body of work inspired by books selected from Manchester Central Library. \nThe boards on display provide an insight into each student’s individual research\, interests and creative journey. Through exploration and experimentation\, students have investigated ideas\, conducted research\, and tested a range of materials and practical processes to develop their work. \nMany of these Foundation Art and Design students began the course with small portfolios but a great deal of passion and determination. SUMMARY:The Manchester Pop Trail – Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up exhibition celebrating the city’s musical heritage through Paul Wilde’s original artwork and research. \nThe Manchester Pop Trail offers a visual record of the city’s musical evolution\, through the creative work of writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde. Spanning genres from the Blues to Punk and Britpop\, this exhibition traces the city’s popular music story – exploring not only the artists who became household names\, but also the forgotten rehearsal rooms\, dancehalls\, clubs\, and community spaces that shaped Manchester’s sound. Many of these stories stretch back as far as 1929\, forming a timeline of popular music that has never been fully mapped. \nThe Origins of the Project \nPaul’s father\, Geoff Wilde\, was a respected local musician who performed in several Manchester bands and famously shared the same bill as The Beatles at the Cavern Club in 1961. Shaped by the music that filled his home and the stories shared by his father\, this early connection to musical history became the spark for a lifelong fascination with the hidden rock ’n’ roll landmarks beneath our noses. \nPaul began meticulously researching and illustrating the historic venues\, people\, and cultural milestones of Greater Manchester that have received little formal documentation and are at risk of disappearing from public memory. Over the years\, Paul’s instinct to preserve what others overlooked grew into a personal mission. \nEngaging the Public with the Story \nThis mission took public form through The Manchester Pop Trail\, Paul’s long-running column in the Manchester Evening News. Week after week\, he researched\, wrote\, and illustrated the city’s musical evolution\, creating a visual record that blended journalism\, heritage\, and art. His hand-drawn illustrations – later developed into ceramic artworks – offered a tactile way to “hold” the city’s music story\, turning research into objects that preserve memory. \nPaul’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. His work has been recognised and supported by leading figures from Manchester’s music community\, including Peter Hook\, Graham Gouldman\, and Graham Nash. He was also presented with a certificate for “keeping the 60s music alive” by members of bands such as The Hollies\, Herman’s Hermits\, and The Dreamers – a testament to the cultural value of his research and the authenticity of his storytelling. \nThe exhibition grew out of a connection made through Time Travellers Tea Room\, Manchester Histories’ community coffee morning where people come together to share stories\, explore the city’s heritage and meet others with an interest in Manchester’s past. After writer\, historian and artist Paul Wilde shared the Manchester Pop Trail with the group\, facilitated by Yussuf M’Rabty\, conversations continued and developed into this exhibition at Manchester Histories Hub. \nThis exhibition marks an opportunity to bring together historians\, musicians\, supporters\, and anyone who believes Manchester’s music story deserves a permanent home. SUMMARY:Schinkel in Manchester 1826-2026
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of architectural models by students from the Manchester School of Architecture of early nineteenth buildings in Berlin and Manchester created to celebrate the bicentenary of the brief visit of the Prussian court architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) to Manchester on July 17 1826. \nDuring his ‘English’ journey Schinkel was brought into direct contact with the industrial progress of Britain in many sites across the country. In Manchester\, and specifically in Ancoats\, he saw an industrial town developing at full spate. As Nikolaus Pevsner described it Schinkel ‘had never seen anything like that\, and indeed could not have seen it anywhere else’. \nThe exhibition compares six of Schinkel’s buildings in Berlin with six similar contemporary buildings in Manchester\, by the architects Charles Barry (1795 – 1860)\, Francis Goodwin (1784-1835) and the anonymous ‘mere foremen’ (as Schinkel described them) who were building the mills and warehouses that were in his view ‘nothing but monstrous masses of red brick … without any trace of architecture …’ \nThere will also be a special talk about this exhibition in the Performance Space on 30 September – see event details here \nFree – just drop in. \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

This ambitious new programme is in association with Arts Council England\, BFI\, awarding National Lottery funding and The Space. \nAfter a resoundingly successful debut last summer\, which saw hundreds of Manchester residents dive into virtual realities\, Manchester Libraries are delighted to confirm that the headsets will return for a series of FREE public drop-in sessions at Manchester Central Library (8-12 Sept)\, Longsight Library (14-16)\, Gorton Hub (17-19 Sept)\, Abraham Moss (23 Sept)\,  New Moston (23 Sept)\, The Avenue (24 Sept) and Newton Heath (27 Sept). This innovative network is the first of its kind\, uniquely combining local relevance with national impact. This ambitious new programme is in association with Arts Council England\, BFI\, awarding National Lottery funding and The Space. \nAfter a resoundingly successful debut last summer\, which saw hundreds of Manchester residents dive into virtual realities\, Manchester Libraries are delighted to confirm that the headsets will return for a series of FREE public drop-in sessions at Manchester Central Library (8-12 Sept)\, Longsight Library (14-16)\, Gorton Hub (17-19 Sept)\, Abraham Moss (23 Sept)\,  New Moston (23 Sept)\, The Avenue (24 Sept) and Newton Heath (27 Sept). The times of the sessions can be found below. \nAcross the three weeks\, visitors to these libraries will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an array of awe-inspiring virtual worlds featuring some familiar faces\, plus leap into some brand new experiences too. \nAmongst the thrilling programme of VR offerings\, the experiences on offer will include: \n\nHold the World with Sir David Attenbrough: Embark on a groundbreaking interactive VR tour of the Natural History Museum in London with the most iconic of guides. Sir David\, who was filmed by more than 100 cameras and digitally recreated as a lifelike SD hologram for the experience\, acts as a private guide\, imparting his expert knowledge on rare objects from †he museum’s collection\, including a blue whale\, a stegosaurus\, and more. Get hands-on with rare specimens from its world-famous collection\, and experience priceless artefacts coming back to life.\nWallace & Gromit in the Grand Getaway: Step into the shoes (and paws) of the legendary Aardman duo as they blast-off on a cracking new adventure that will take you from the familiar sights of West Wallaby Street to the strange surroundings of deep space. An interactive treat – all in glorious VR-O-Rama!\nThe Philharmonia Virtual Orchestra – The Lark Ascending: Experience a mesmerising 360-degree performance of Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece featuring Nicola Benedetti.\nMonoliths: Explore England’s northern landscape through the voices and spoken word of three women\, in this poignant XR experience by Pilot Theatre and One to One Development Trust.\n**New** Doorstep Duets – An absorbing VR180 capture of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures by immersive filmmakers Neon8.\nDigital Spaces : People in Places films – short films from the local communities.\n\nThe VR headset experiences arrive as part of Manchester Libraries recently announced participation in the new Libraries Digital Network\, a groundbreaking collaboration with eight other library services\, including: Bradford\, Cambridgeshire\, Coventry\, Leeds\, Newham\, Nottinghamshire\, Somerset\, and Sunderland. This innovative network is the first of its kind\, uniquely combining local relevance with national impact. SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition: What Makes a Great Coach?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the charity Women in Sport\, this photo exhibition celebrates everything women bring to coaching. \nStill in 2026\, women are still undervalued and underrepresented in sports coaching. Women in Sport’s research has found that 30% of female coaches report being bullied (twice as many as men) and are 18% less likely to say their opinions are heard and respected. Despite good intentions\, many approaches still focus on ‘fixing the women’\, encouraging resilience\, confidence or aspiration rather than improving the conditions that make it harder for women to enter and stay in coaching. The issue is not women’s capability; it is the system they work within.
