Whether you’re a curious beginner\, community organiser\, artist\, or family historian\, these sessions will equip you with essential skills to record oral histories and prepare them for archiving. \nLed by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre & Education Trust\, these workshops centre African\, Caribbean and migrant narratives in Manchester\, recognising the power of community-led archiving. \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 1: Why Our Stories Matter & Oral History Skills\nSaturday 8th November | 1:30 pm start \nThis session introduces the foundations of community archiving and the purpose of collecting oral histories. Learn why preserving our stories is vital\, and gain practical skills in: \n\nOral history theory and ethical interviewing\nRecording techniques and gaining consent\nPractising interview skills with guided prompts\n\nOptional: 45-minute tour of the library’s digital exhibition space. \nYou’ll leave with: a deeper understanding of why oral storytelling matters and the confidence to start gathering stories from family\, friends and community members. \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Preserving and Preparing Our Stories for the Future\nSaturday 15th November | 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm \nThis session focuses on what happens after you collect a story. Learn practical skills to prepare and preserve material for the future\, including: \n\nWriting indexes and summaries from recorded stories\nAn introduction to Audacity (or alternative) for basic audio editing\nSensitivity reviews and data protection essentials\nGuided activities using short practice interviews\nLooking at real examples from African and Caribbean archives\n\n📚 Optional: Mini tour of archive collections. \nYou’ll leave with: the confidence to handle recorded material responsibly and the practical skills to support community archiving efforts. \n\n\n\n\nWhy Attend Both?\nWhile each workshop can be attended separately\, together they form a complete introduction to community archiving — from collecting powerful oral histories to preserving them for future generations. SUMMARY:Town Hall Lectures: 'Wooden it be nice' - Restoring our Doors and Floors
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in 2018 for major restoration to repair and upgrade the building to modern standards. The work includes conservation of many original heritage features. \nThe Heritage Lectures in Central Library shine a light on some of this fascinating work and the next one – on Tuesday 3 February – will focus on the work of the woodworking expertise of Swift Crafted\, with a presentation by Operations Director\, Paul Smith. Restoring the doors and panelling throughout the Town Hall’s many rooms and timber flooring too\,  Find out more about their trade\, their work and some of the features they’ve discovered in and around the Town Hall. \nWooden it be nice – restoring our doors\, panelling and timber floors: \nPaul Smith\, Swift Crafted’s Operations Director\, will present this lecture. From the history of carpentry and passing on traditional woodworking skills\, through the tools of the trade and how they’ve approached the work they’ve undertaken on the Town Hall’s doors\, panelling and timber floors to bring these beautiful features back to their stunning best; this lecture definitely ‘wooden’ be one to miss. \nThe lectures are free to attend and either session can be booked below: \nSession One – 1pm to 2.15pm \nSession Two 5.30pm to 6.45pm \n

DESCRIPTION:What do George V\, Gypsy Rose Lee and Bernard Bresslaw have in common? \nWhich musician was once thrown out of the Language and Literature Library? \nWhat would you find now in the space where Patrick Stewart and Helen Mirren – amongst many others – played their first roles? \nAll these questions – and many more – are answered on a tour of Manchester Central Library which will take you to all the areas not normally accessible to the general public and tell the story of this iconic building. Tours last around 90 minutes and include the chance to see some of our rarest treasures and archives. \nPlease meet in the main entrance (Shakespeare Hall) of Central Library from 5.45pm.
