DESCRIPTION:What’s it like to be sixteen years old now? In this exhibition\, leading contemporary photographers join forces to present multimedia project\, Sixteen\, exploring the dreams\, hopes and fears of sixteen-year olds across the UK. Photographer Craig Easton conceived this ambitious project following his engagement with sixteen-year olds at the time of the Scottish Referendum. It was the first\, and as yet only\, time that these young people were given the vote in the UK. DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and take a walk down Manchester’s high street passing by some of the city’s iconic shop windows. From department stores to grocers and from toy shops to fashion boutiques\, this exhibition will transport you back to a time when the only way to shop was on the high street. \nProfessor Jon Stobart and Michala Hulme\, historians from Manchester Metropolitan University\, have worked with Manchester Archives + on the this project collecting nominations and cherished memories of the city’s best-loved retail therapy spots\, from grand Victorian department stores to ‘Madchester’ record shops. They have delved through the entries – as varied as fashion boutiques\, toy shops\, butchers and chippies – to unveil the region’s favourites. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A LIVE SCREENING OF AN EVENT AT THE BRITISH LIBRARY \nHow do you tell the story of a recipe? \nA recipe is so much more than a set of instructions; it is a story\, an experience waiting to happen. \nWe explore the role of voice\, narrative and storytelling in cookery books with three fantastic food writers. \nThis event will have live speech-to-text interpretation. \nNigella Lawson read Medieval and Modern Languages at Lady Margaret Hall\, Oxford and went on to become Deputy Literary Editor of The Sunday Times at the age of 26\, followed by a successful career as a freelance columnist and journalist\, writing for a range of magazines and newspapers. In 1998 she wrote her first cookbook\, How To Eat: The Pleasures and Principles of Good Food\, and now has 11 bestselling books to her name. These books\, and her television series\, have made her a household name around the world. \nElla Risbridger is a 26-year-old London based journalist and poet. She has written for the Guardian\, Prospect\, The Pool\, Grazia\, Stylist and The i. Midnight Chicken is Ella’s debut and is a cookbook to make you fall in love with the world again: what it means to share a meal\, the simple pleasure in cooking for yourself and how\, sometimes\, food can help you through even the darkest moments in life. \nBee Wilson is a food writer\, historian and school food campaigner. She is the author of 6 books on food related subjects including The Way We Eat Now: Strategies for Eating in a World of Change\, First Bite: How We Learn to Eat and Consider the Fork. She writes about food and other subjects for a wide range of publications including The Wall Street Journal\, The Guardian and The London Review of Books. She was named Fortnum and Mason food writer of the year in 2016\, 2017 and 2018.
