The African Presence in University of Manchester’s Bicentenary 1824-2024

This year, as the University of Manchester celebrates its 200th anniversary and recognises the significant achievements and contributions of many figures, groups and organisations, we must ensure that the profound impact of individuals from the African continent and the African Diaspora is not overlooked.

We are honoured to present an illustrative review and critique by historical researcher and teacher, Washington Alcott, focusing on the African presence throughout the University’s 200-year history. Utilizing the University’s extensive archival records, books, public inscriptions, and the accomplishments of its graduates, this presentation will highlight the vital contributions of people of African descent to the socio-cultural and economic fabric of the University.

We look forward to celebrating this historic occasion with you and reflecting on our shared legacy.
