Pat Barker: The Silence of the Girls
The tale of Achilles and the Trojan War has been told many times, but what about the stories of the women? In The Silence of the Girls, Pat Barker imagines The Iliad from the perspective of Briseis, the former queen awarded to Achilles as a prize of war. Drawing together the feminist focus of her early novels (Union Street, Blow Your House Down), and the mastery of historical war writing in more recent work (The Regeneration Trilogy), Pat has produced a fierce reclamation of Briseis’s story. She will be in conversation with author and MLF Patron Kamila Shamsie, whose latest novel, Home Fire, is an acclaimed retelling of the Greek play Antigone.
