SUMMARY:The Great Hall Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Town Hall closed in January 2018 and work then began on a labour of love: a once-in-a-lifetime chance to repair\, protect and update this architectural masterpiece for future generations. The Great Hall is the Town Hall’s centrepiece. It includes a huge variety of conservation and restoration projects and is a great example of the work we’re doing throughout the building. Our approach to the unique elements of this  space reflects the level of care needed for the whole project. This exhibition looks at just three details of the Great Hall to tell some of the story of the Our Town Hall project. \n\n\nFree – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:Cultural Masterplanning - How Manchester changed the way we make cities
DESCRIPTION:A major new exhibition at Manchester Central Library explores the process of Cultural Masterplanning and how creative interventions in urban spaces undergoing redevelopment can reconnect fragmented places with their past and allow us to look to a dynamic shared future. These playful interactions change how transformation feels and help us involved and  that change is happening with us\, not to us. \nShowcased across the Exhibition Hall and Wolfson Reading Room at Central Library from April to September 2026 are glimpses of buried histories of lives and industry which sparked curiosity and conversation about places in transition such as Ancoats\, Central Library itself and Mayfield Depot\, as well as examples from Glasgow and London. \nCitizen Manchester takes a deep dive into the extraordinary transformation of Central Library and Town Hall Extension\, Manchester’s historic twin treasures whose restoration began in 2014 and continues to lead the city’s rebirth as a global icon blending heritage and innovation. Citizen Manchester records and celebrates the creation of the first ever Modern City. From April to August 2026 Central Library’s Exhibition Hall and First Floor corridors of Central Library will feature photographs and artefacts from the transformation\, allowing viewers a close-up look at the rich patina and textures captured within the walls of these beloved spaces. \nThe Lost World of Mayfield has returned to the First Floor Reading Room of Central Library\, showcasing archival treasures from Mayfield\, the area now transformed by a thriving green space including a brand-new public park and the transformed Mayfield Depot. This area behind Manchester’s Piccadilly Station was formerly a wasteland whose industrial heritage was largely forgotten so much that few locals knew its original name.  Currently on show are artefacts and images from the Mayfield Pattern Book\, Graham’s Dye Recipe Book and the Mayfield Grit Walk story cards which uncover the history of Thomas Hoyle and Sons Calico Printing Works and the dwellings and bathhouse which served the residents and workers following its demise. \nThe Cultural Masterplanning exhibition has been curated by Sam Hallas and produced by Dan Dubowitz of FLEX Manchester School of Architecture in collaboration with Manchester City Council\, Archives+\, and Manchester Art Gallery. It can be viewed in the Exhibition Hall at Central Library until the end of June 2026 and continues on the First Floor and Reading Room with Citizen Manchester\, Grit Walks and the Lost World of Mayfield on display until the end of September 2026. \nFree – just drop in \nPlease make a donation to support our Library Live cultural programme at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes or online

SUMMARY:New Horizons Choir sing Punk Classics
DESCRIPTION:Part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations marking the anniversary of the Sex Pistols’ legendary Lesser Free Trade Hall\, the New Horizons Choirs will be performing a special punk set.\n\nNew Horizons is a fun\, welcoming\, inclusive choir who meet for a sing every week in the Manchester Central Library. With a varied repertoire of songs\, from 80s pop ballads through classics and showtunes to upbeat contemporary bangers\, they have been the house choir at the library for many years.  After a stunning “Oasis Week” set last year\, the choir are now preparing for a special punk set like no other. \nAs choir leader Tom Guest says of the set: \n“Punk is not the obvious choice of genre for a choir\, but it has been great putting these Punk classics together in rehearsal. These songs by Blondie\, The Clash\, The Jam and Buzzcocks are all so infectious – so make sure you sing along with us and raise the roof again\, 50 years on!” \nPrimarily a singing group for well-being\, with the focus on enjoying the mental health benefits singing together can bring\, the choir have also given performances at established local venues such as Manchester Cathedral\, Gorton Monastery\, and of course Manchester Central Library. \nFree – just drop in. \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library

SUMMARY:Never Mind The Books Here’s PUNK DAY!
DESCRIPTION:This July\, the Henry Watson Music Library will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Sex Pistols’ iconic 1976 gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall. \nA definitive milestone in the city’s musical history\, Sex Pistols’ first appearance in Manchester has since become the stuff of rock legend. Named “the most important gig of all time” by the NME\, it was a watershed moment that ushered in a new generation of artists and a new way of thinking\, and redefined music in the North\, and beyond\, forever.  \n\nWith the former Lesser Free Trade Hall just across the street\, the Henry Watson Music Library at Central Library will be commemorating that legendary date with a day that salutes everything PUNK.\n\nPromising a packed afternoon of themed talks and Q&As\, acclaimed author DAVID NOLAN will be presenting his book “I Swear I Was There – Sex Pistols\, Manchester and the Gig that Changed the World”. Despite thousands claiming they were in attendance\, only a handful of people were actually there – but those that were went on to form bands including The Smiths\, Buzzcocks\, Joy Division\, New Order and The Fall. In a myth-busting masterclass of investigative journalism\, Nolan has sorted the hardcore facts from the rock’n’roll fiction and will be appearing at the Library in-person to tell us exactly who really was at the Lesser Free Trade Hall gig\, and who has just been blagging… \n\nElsewhere\, Manchester music scene legend and talking head JOHN ROBB\, will be talking about his brand new book “Punk Rock Ruined My Life and Other Stories”. As the frontman of both Membranes and Goldblade\, and founder of tastemaker site Louder Than War\, John is a man who knows punk inside-out. Chatting through his new memoir\, he will be delving into his deep friendships with figures like Poly Styrene to Chris Packham\, growing up in Blackpool\, interviewing icons like Mark E. Smith to Patti Smith\, plus opening-up on a host of other riotous stories. \n\nPlus\, proving it wasn’t just the Pistols tearing up the rule book\, Louder Than War journalist IAIN KEY will be presenting his new “All The Young Punks: A People’s History of The Clash”. From their own punk explosion of 1976 to become an internationally acclaimed arena act\, Iain will be discussing their history with lifelong Clash fan PAUL HANLEY (ex-Fall). \n\nAnd in true punk spirit\, one of Manchester’s most fiery new acts DEAD STILETTOS will be performing live to show us that the legacy of what the Sex Pistols started in the Lesser Free Trade Hall is alive and well. DIY to the core\, the five-piece have been described as “Stoogified Mancunian Punk” and will deliver a shot of live rock’n’roll mayhem to close proceedings with a bang. \n\nBook tickets here or click on ‘Book Now’ below and ‘pay-what-you can’. All donations go to Manchester Libraries to support future activities.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Alistair McGowan
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch: Like Never Before by Alistair McGowan. \nMonday 13th July\, 6.00pm – 7.15pm. \nDoors open 5.40pm and free entry. \nComic\, poignant\, and observational\, Alistair’s new poetry collection embraces the theme of a changing world – linguistically\, politically\, and environmentally – and the changes we all experience as we age. This is Alistair – like never before – commenting on a world that is accelerating like never before. \nAlistair McGowan is best known for his impressions\, winning a BAFTA in 2003 for his BBC One series The Big Impression. He has also worked as an actor\, regularly on radio\, occasionally on television\, and nationwide on stage (being nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance as The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors). \nAlistair has written his own stand-up comedy throughout his 35-year career. He also wrote the stage play Timing (nominated for best new comedy in the WhatsOnStage Awards)\, and three Radio 4 plays about composers Erik Satie and John Field and the first performance of Pygmalion. He wrote the majority of the sketches in four series of The Big Impression and the book A Matter of Life and Death with his former comedy partner\, Ronni Ancona. \nLike Never Before is his second poetry collection. \nPraise for the author’s poetry: \n“All the wit you’d expect and yearn for but with a really surprising and delicious sensitivity.” Joanna Lumley \n“Sometimes just funny\, then melancholic\, occasionally beautifully profound\, always insightful and well observed.” Franny Moyle \n“Verbally adroit\, often witty\, revealing a considered view of the world. Masterly.” Simon Callow \nPresented by Flapjack Press and Manchester Libraries. \nhttps://flapjackpress.co.uk

SUMMARY:Hispanic Film Club: La isla mínima
DESCRIPTION:Manchester Central Library and the Instituto Cervantes of Manchester proudly present the Hispanic Film Club. Join us for this month’s film\, La isla mínima. \nThe Manchester Central Library and the Instituto Cervantes Manchester present the Hispanic Film Club\, with a special series that celebrates the richness and diversity of Spanish-language cinema. This programme shines a spotlight on powerful stories of resilience\, identity\, and humanity\, all told through the lens of female directors. A series of brutal murders of adolescent girls in a remote and forgotten town brings together two disparate characters – both detectives in the homicide division – to investigate the cases. With deep divisions in their ideology\, detectives Juan and Pedro must put aside their differences if they are to successfully hunt down a killer who\, for years\, has terrorised a community in the shadow of a general disregard for women rooted in a misogynistic past. \nSuitable for ages 16+ \nFree – booking required via Eventbrite or click ‘Book now’ below \nPlease consider making a donation if you can here or at one of our cash or contactless donation boxes in Central Library
